Admission

Worship in the grounds and at the main hall is free. Museums in the grounds and nearby facilities charge separately.

Opening hours

Open for worship throughout the year. Gates open at 06:00 from the spring equinox and at 06:30 from the autumn equinox. Closing time is 18:30 from December to March, 19:30 from June to August, and 19:00 in April–May and September–November. The museum in the grounds opens from 09:00 to 16:30, with last entry at 16:00.

The shrine approach and grounds

Browse the shops along the approach as you walk from Dazaifu Station to the shrine. Once there, worship and explore the grounds with their large trees. Allow a longer visit if you want to add a meal and shopping.

How to get to Dazaifu Tenmangu

From Hakata, take the subway to Tenjin and walk to Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station. Check whether your train runs directly to Dazaifu or requires a change at Futsukaichi. Get off at Dazaifu Station and follow the shrine approach on foot.

Before you visit

Set aside at least half a day, including the return journey

Dazaifu Tenmangu is in Dazaifu City, outside Fukuoka City. Allow at least half a day for the return train journey and a walk along the shrine approach. Check the train times and whether a transfer is needed for your travel date.

Plan museum time separately from worship

Last entry to the museum in the grounds is at 16:00. If you want to visit it, allow time for both the shrine and museum. Check official notices for temporary changes to gate times or event arrangements on your visit date.
