The Kanmon pedestrian tunnel lets you walk beneath the strait from Shimonoseki to Moji. Its 780 m passage connects Yamaguchi and Fukuoka prefectures.

Pedestrians enter free. Bicycles and mopeds cost JPY 20 and must be pushed through on foot.
Opening hours
The pedestrian tunnel opens daily from 06:00–22:00. Operations may change or access may be restricted; check official information before visiting.
What to see at Kanmon Pedestrian Tunnel
Take the lift to the undersea passage
Take the lift down at the Shimonoseki entrance to reach the passage towards Moji. Walk beneath the sea to Fukuoka Prefecture on the other side.
How to get to Kanmon Pedestrian Tunnel
Take a Kokudo Line bus from Shimonoseki Station stand 1 or 2 to Mimosusogawa. Walk about one minute to the Shimonoseki pedestrian entrance. From Karato, use stand 6. Adult one-way fares are JPY 300. Take the lift down to the 780 m passage towards Moji. Before leaving, check return buses for your date and the return stop's location at Mimosusogawa.

Before you visit
Pedestrian entrance and bicycles
Use the pedestrian entrance, separate from the road and JR rail tunnels. Bicycles and mopeds cannot be ridden through: dismount and push them. Walking to Moji and back covers 1.56 km inside the tunnel alone.
Questions about Kanmon Pedestrian Tunnel
Do I have to return to Shimonoseki after crossing?
You can continue from Moji or return through the same passage. A round trip is 1.56 km within the tunnel; travel to either surface entrance is additional.
