How to get to Sado Gold Mine

Take a Sado Kisen ferry from Niigata Port to Ryotsu Port. The car ferry takes about 2 hours 30 minutes; the jetfoil takes about 67 minutes. At Ryotsu Port, take a Main Line bus to the mine and get off at Sado Kinzan-mae. Walk to the mine entrance beside the stop. The existing bus example uses the weekday timetable valid 1 April–30 November 2026, so check a separate timetable for weekends, public holidays or travel outside that period. Choose your return bus to your accommodation or the port. Ask the facility about access before visiting if you need a route without stairs.

Before you visit

Prepare for cool tunnels and stairs

The tunnels are about 10°C, so bring a layer even in warm weather. There are stairs; ask the facility about visiting options if these are difficult for you. Allow about 60–90 minutes for the standard course, plus separate ferry and bus travel time.

Can I visit Sado Gold Mine as a day trip from Niigata?

First check whether travel-day return ferries and island buses fit the mine's admission hours and visit time. Besides the tunnels, you need ferry travel between Niigata and Ryotsu ports and a bus from Ryotsu Port to the mine. Staying on the island after the mine lets you take the ferry to Niigata the following day.
