What would you like to see in Niigata?

Walk with views of Bandai Bridge's six arches and the riverside. Marinepia Nihonkai offers marine life, while the observation deck offers views over the city. Choose lunch at Pia Bandai after the deck, or explore a historic residence and garden at the Niigata Saito Villa. Yahiko Shrine requires a train change; the tunnels at Sado Gold Mine require a ferry and island buses.

Itineraries by trip length

For a short city trip, choose the riverside and aquarium or observation deck. Give Yahiko a separate train day. Overnight Sado trips separate the crossing, island sightseeing and return to Niigata. Accommodation, meals and long-distance transport are outside itinerary subtotals.

2 days / 1 night

Stay one night in Niigata and walk along the riverside on day one. Choose aquarium exhibits or the free observation deck and port market on day two, then return to the station by bus.

3 days / 2 nights

Two nights in Niigata give you a day each for Yahiko and the aquarium. To cross to Sado, choose one night each in Niigata and Ryotsu; that itinerary excludes the gold mine.

4 days / 3 nights

Stay three nights in Niigata for separate days at Yahiko, the aquarium and observation deck. For the mine, stay one night in Niigata and two in Ryotsu, keeping the mine visit and ferry return on different days.

5 days / 4 nights

With four nights in Niigata, add a visit to the Niigata Saito Villa. For both the aquarium and Sado Gold Mine, choose two nights each in Niigata and Ryotsu. Check island buses together with your return ferry.

Does the JR TOKYO Wide Pass cover travel to Niigata city?

Coverage of part of Niigata Prefecture does not mean the pass reaches Niigata Station. Check the Joetsu Shinkansen boundary at Echigo-Yuzawa. For travel to Niigata Station, compare the extra rail sections outside the pass and the separate ferry and bus costs for Sado. Check seasonal opening notices if visiting GALA Yuzawa. Port buses, Sado Kisen ferries, island buses and facility admission also cost extra.

Check the Bandai Bridge view before a riverside walk

Niigata Prefecture's camera near Bandai Bridge provides photos updated about every 10 minutes. Preview the area around the bridge before your riverside walk, and check the capture time at the original source. A single photo does not establish access along the whole riverside or ferry operations.
