Day 1 · Bandai Bridge and riverside walk
Take an easy walk around Bandai Bridge and the riverside on arrival, then stay near Niigata Station.

- Bandai Bridge and Yasuragitei → Niigata Station, then your booked accommodation
Retrace your route via Bandai City to Niigata Station, then go to your accommodation and rest. The city's official guide gives about 15 minutes from the riverside to the station, excluding meals, shopping and waits at crossings.

Day 2 · Change at Yoshida for Yahiko Shrine
Walk through Yahiko Shrine's torii gate and past its stone bridge to explore the grounds, then return to your Niigata accommodation. Change trains at Yoshida, visit the shrine and have lunch before returning to Yahiko Station.

Go from your accommodation to Niigata Station. Hotel Mets guests can use the station's western connecting passage. Choose a JR Echigo Line train towards Yoshida. Return JR fares to Yahiko are outside the itinerary subtotal; check your ticket's valid route.

Take the Echigo Line to Yoshida and get off. Check JR's travel-day information for your connecting Yahiko-bound train's departure platform.

Use the stairs and connecting passage shown on the station map to reach the Yahiko-bound platform. The station guide lists no lifts or escalators; ask JR about alternatives if stairs are difficult for you.

Take a JR Yahiko Line train bound for Yahiko and get off there. If your previous train is delayed, check the next connection.
- Yahiko Station → First shrine torii → worship hall and grounds
The official guide gives about 1 km, or a 15-minute walk, from Yahiko Station to the shrine. Pass the first torii gate, stone bridge, second torii and Zuishinmon gate, then pay your respects in front of the worship hall and explore the grounds. Meals and sightseeing take extra time.
- Yahiko Station → Change at Yoshida for Niigata Station
After exploring the shrine and village, return to Yahiko Station and take a train to Yoshida. Get off at Yoshida even if the train is bound for Higashi-Sanjo, then change to the Echigo Line towards Niigata. The ropeway, mountain summit and paid treasure exhibition are outside this itinerary.

The change at Yoshida involves stairs. Leave time to return to the station after your shrine visit and lunch, and check travel-day return services and fares with JR. Ask the shrine about fees and access hours for ordinary visits to the grounds, and plan your walk in daylight. The treasure exhibition, prayer services and ropeway are outside this itinerary.
Day 3 · Visit Marinepia Nihonkai
See marine life in the Sea of Japan tank and penguin exhibits. The indoor exhibits are also suitable for a rainy day.

Take the C22 bus bound for Suizokukan-mae from stand 9 at Niigata Station Bus Terminal and get off at the last stop. The adult single fare is JPY 260. Check your return bus to Niigata Station before deciding how long to stay.
- Suizokukan-mae bus stop → Main entrance, then exhibits and a meal
Buy standard adult admission for JPY 1,500 at the main entrance ticket counter. Usual hours are 9 am–5 pm, with ticket sales ending at 4.30 pm. Explore the large tank and indoor exhibits, allowing breaks for lunch and rest. Choose performances from the day's programme. Meals and extra activities cost extra.

Take the C22 bus bound for Niigata Station from Suizokukan-mae and get off at the station. Allow extra time to walk to the stop and wait for the bus. Return to the same accommodation and rest.

If the aquarium is closed, switch to the observation deck and market itinerary. If only performances are cancelled, focus on the exhibits. Check closure dates and performance times through the facility links in the attraction guide.
Day 4 · Observation deck and Pia Bandai
Enjoy city views and lunch at the market. Walk to the market after the observation deck, then return to the station by bus.

From stand 17 at Niigata Station Bus Terminal, take a bus bound for Sado Kisen via Toki Messe and get off at Toki Messe. The adult single fare is JPY 260. Use the pedestrian passage on Level 2 inside the terminal to reach the stand.

Cross the plaza and enter Bandai-jima Building through the Hotel Nikko Niigata and office entrance. Take the direct observation deck lift from Level 1 to Level 31, rather than the hotel or office lifts. Standard admission is free. Usual hours are 8 am–10 pm, with last admission at 9.30 pm. Private bookings or events may shorten the hours or close the deck.

After enjoying the view, take the direct lift to Level 1 and leave the building. Use the observation deck lift, rather than the hotel or office lifts.

Walk to Pia Bandai. The city's official route gives about 10 minutes, excluding meals and shopping. Browse the market and choose lunch at an open restaurant. Check individual opening days and hours in the official shop directory.

Walk to the regular Niigata Station-bound bus stop outside Pia Bandai after browsing the market. This is different from the sightseeing bus stop.
- Outside Pia Bandai, towards Niigata Station → Board the bus and get off at Niigata Station
Take a regular bus bound for Niigata Station from the stop outside Pia Bandai and get off at the station. The adult single fare is JPY 260. This is different from the Pia Bandai sightseeing bus stop and the stops for Sado Kisen or the prefectural office.

Go to the ticket gates and platform for your next train. Leave enough time between your bus arrival and train departure to walk through the station.

Day 2 · Niigata Port to your Ryotsu accommodation
Cross to Sado by ferry and stay in Ryotsu. Allow time to reach the port, buy tickets and board, then disembark and reach your accommodation.

- Sado Kisen bus stop → Passenger terminal and boarding procedures
Walk to the passenger terminal to buy tickets and complete boarding procedures. The bus operator advises completing these at least 30 minutes before sailing. The ferry operator recommends arriving about 10–20 minutes before departure with a digital boarding pass, or about 30–40 minutes before departure to buy at a counter or machine. Allow extra time according to how you buy your ticket.

- Niigata Port, second-class car ferry → Ryotsu Port ferry terminal
Take the second-class car ferry to Ryotsu on Sado. The sailing takes about 2 hours 30 minutes. Check date-specific fares in the itinerary costs below and the ferry operator's guide. Port buses, ticketing, waiting and disembarkation take extra time. The onboard restaurant may be closed; check the day's information if you plan to eat on the ferry.

- Ryotsu Port ferry terminal → Your Ryotsu accommodation
Go from Ryotsu Port to the suggested accommodation, Guesthouse Jink. The operator gives about a four-minute walk from the terminal.
- Guesthouse Jink → Port-side shore of Lake Kamo, then the same accommodation
Take an easy walk along Lake Kamo near Ryotsu Port, then return to the same accommodation. The tourism body's estimate of about three minutes from the port bus stop to the lake is not the time for a full circuit. Spend this day exploring and resting near the port; it does not include the gold mine.
For a stay near Ryotsu Port, consider Guesthouse Jink, about four minutes on foot from the terminal. If you choose another property, check the route there from the port.
Day 3 · Return trip to Sado Gold Mine, then stay in Ryotsu
Walk through the mine tunnels and see mining exhibits today. Afterwards, take the bus back to your Ryotsu accommodation for another night, then return to Niigata by ferry the next day.
- Ryotsu Port, Sado Kisen bus stop → Main Line bus to Sado Kinzan-mae
From Sado Kisen stop at Ryotsu Port, take a Main Line bus bound for Sado Kinzan-mae and get off at the last stop. Check the destination: not every Main Line service reaches the mine. The direct adult single fare is JPY 860.

- Sado Kinzan-mae → Mine entrance beside the bus stop, then admission desk
Go to the mine entrance beside the stop and follow the ticketing and admission instructions. The standard Sado Gold Mine course costs JPY 1,500 for junior high school students and older, with a suggested visit of 60–90 minutes. From April to October, admission starts at 8 am, last admission is 4 pm and closing is 5.30 pm. From November to March, these are 8.30 am, 3.30 pm and 5 pm. The route involves stairs; check advance notices for changes due to repairs or other work.

- Sado Kinzan-mae, then change at Aikawa → Ryotsu Port, then the same island accommodation
Take a bus from Sado Kinzan-mae to Aikawa, then change there for Ryotsu Port. The adult fares are JPY 260 and JPY 860, totalling JPY 1,120. Choose both return services before starting your visit. Return to your Ryotsu accommodation for another night; take the ferry the following day.

Day 4 · Ryotsu Port to Niigata Station
Return from Ryotsu to Niigata today. Check travel time from your accommodation to the port and from Niigata Port to the station when choosing your ferry.

Take the second-class car ferry from Ryotsu Port back to Niigata. Beyond the roughly 2-hour-30-minute sailing, allow time to disembark and wait for the port bus before any onward departure from Niigata Station.

Walk to the regular Niigata Station-bound bus stop at Sado Kisen after disembarking. Use this rather than the prefectural office-bound stop or temporary event stands.

These costs are for one adult at standard rates. The JPY 1,120 return from the mine comprises two bus rides: JPY 260 to Aikawa and JPY 860 from Aikawa to Ryotsu Port. The JPY 7,260 ferry total is two standard second-class fares of JPY 3,630, including the fuel adjustment, valid 1 October–31 December 2026. Frequently asked questions
Do I take the ferry to Niigata straight after the mine?
With two nights in Ryotsu, return to your accommodation by bus after the mine, then take the ferry to Niigata the following day. Leave time for a meal and rest at the port on your ferry day, and choose the connecting bus from Niigata Port to the station.

Do the mine and island buses use the same times in winter?
The standard mine course starts admission at 8 am from April–October, with last admission at 4 pm and closing at 5.30 pm. From November to March, admission starts at 8.30 am, last admission is 3.30 pm and closing is 5 pm. The island bus example uses the weekday timetable valid 1 April–30 November 2026. For December onwards, weekends or public holidays, check the appropriate timetable through to your return services.
