Day 2 · Change at Yoshida for Yahiko Shrine
Walk through Yahiko Shrine's torii gate and past its stone bridge to explore the grounds, then return to your Niigata accommodation. Change trains at Yoshida, visit the shrine and have lunch before returning to Yahiko Station.

Take the Echigo Line to Yoshida and get off. Check JR's travel-day information for your connecting Yahiko-bound train's departure platform.

Use the stairs and connecting passage shown on the station map to reach the Yahiko-bound platform. The station guide lists no lifts or escalators; ask JR about alternatives if stairs are difficult for you.

Take a JR Yahiko Line train bound for Yahiko and get off there. If your previous train is delayed, check the next connection.
- Yahiko Station → First shrine torii → worship hall and grounds
The official guide gives about 1 km, or a 15-minute walk, from Yahiko Station to the shrine. Pass the first torii gate, stone bridge, second torii and Zuishinmon gate, then pay your respects in front of the worship hall and explore the grounds. Meals and sightseeing take extra time.

After exploring the shrine and village, return to Yahiko Station and take a train to Yoshida. Get off at Yoshida even if the train is bound for Higashi-Sanjo, then change to the Echigo Line towards Niigata. The ropeway, mountain summit and paid treasure exhibition are outside this itinerary.

The change at Yoshida involves stairs. Leave time to return to the station after your shrine visit and lunch, and check travel-day return services and fares with JR. Ask the shrine about fees and access hours for ordinary visits to the grounds, and plan your walk in daylight. The treasure exhibition, prayer services and ropeway are outside this itinerary.
Day 3 · Visit Marinepia Nihonkai
See marine life in the Sea of Japan tank and penguin exhibits. The indoor exhibits are also suitable for a rainy day.

Take the C22 bus bound for Suizokukan-mae from stand 9 at Niigata Station Bus Terminal and get off at the last stop. The adult single fare is JPY 260. On your last day, choose your return service before deciding how long to stay.

Enter through the main entrance, buy your ticket at the counter beside the museum shop, then go to the admission entrance. Standard adult admission is JPY 1,500. Usual hours are 9 am–5 pm, with ticket sales ending at 4.30 pm.

Explore the Sea of Japan tank and indoor exhibits, then have lunch and rest. Continue to the penguin and marine mammal areas afterwards. Choose performances from the day's programme; meals and extra activities cost extra.

Take the C22 bus bound for Niigata Station from Suizokukan-mae and get off at the station. Allow time to walk to the stop and wait for the bus in addition to your visit.

Go to the ticket gates and platform for your next train. Leave enough time between your bus arrival and train departure to walk through the station.

Day 2 · Niigata Port to your Ryotsu accommodation
Cross to Sado by ferry and stay in Ryotsu. Allow time to reach the port, buy tickets and board, then disembark and reach your accommodation.

- Sado Kisen bus stop → Passenger terminal and boarding procedures
Walk to the passenger terminal to buy tickets and complete boarding procedures. The bus operator advises completing these at least 30 minutes before sailing. The ferry operator recommends arriving about 10–20 minutes before departure with a digital boarding pass, or about 30–40 minutes before departure to buy at a counter or machine. Allow extra time according to how you buy your ticket.

Take the second-class car ferry to Ryotsu on Sado. The sailing takes about 2 hours 30 minutes. Check date-specific fares in the itinerary costs below and the ferry operator's guide. Port buses, ticketing, waiting and disembarkation take extra time. The onboard restaurant may be closed; check the day's information if you plan to eat on the ferry.

Go from Ryotsu Port to the suggested accommodation, Guesthouse Jink. The operator gives about a four-minute walk from the terminal.
- Guesthouse Jink → Port-side shore of Lake Kamo, then the same accommodation
Take an easy walk along Lake Kamo near Ryotsu Port, then return to the same accommodation. The tourism body's estimate of about three minutes from the port bus stop to the lake is not the time for a full circuit. Spend this day exploring and resting near the port; it does not include the gold mine.
For a stay near Ryotsu Port, consider Guesthouse Jink, about four minutes on foot from the terminal. If you choose another property, check the route there from the port.
Day 3 · Return from Ryotsu Port to Niigata
Travel from your accommodation to Ryotsu Port today. For a gold-mine visit as well, see four-day option B, with two nights in Ryotsu.

Have a meal and rest at the port shops, then complete boarding procedures. Recommended arrival times differ for digital boarding passes and tickets bought at a counter or machine; follow the official boarding guide below.

Take the second-class car ferry from Ryotsu Port back to Niigata. Beyond the roughly 2-hour-30-minute sailing, allow time to disembark and wait for the port bus before any onward departure from Niigata Station.

Walk to the regular Niigata Station-bound bus stop at Sado Kisen after disembarking. Use this rather than the prefectural office-bound stop or temporary event stands.

Take a bus bound for Niigata Station from Sado Kisen and get off at the station. The adult single fare is JPY 260. If ferry delays or disembarkation queues make you miss it, choose the next service in the travel-day timetable.

On the day you leave the island, have a meal and rest at the port rather than adding distant attractions. Choose the Niigata Station-bound bus to connect with your ferry arrival.

These costs are for one adult travelling without a vehicle. Port buses cost JPY 260 each way; the standard second-class car ferry costs JPY 3,630 each way from 1 October–31 December 2026. The stated ferry fare includes the fuel adjustment. This trip excludes the gold mine, so its admission and island bus fares are outside the total. Does the three-day Sado itinerary include the mine?
The trip with one night each in Niigata and near Ryotsu Port excludes the mine and island buses. JPY 7,780 is only the subtotal of return second-class car ferry fares of JPY 7,260 and return Niigata port buses of JPY 520. For the mine as well, compare the four-day trip with two nights in Ryotsu.
