Two nights in Niigata: Yahiko or Sado?

For shrine worship and the aquarium, spend two nights at the same Niigata hotel. To sail to the island and walk around the port and lake, split your stay between one night in Niigata and one in Ryotsu. Change trains at Yoshida for Yahiko; sail from Niigata Port for Sado. The one-night Ryotsu itinerary stays around the port. To include the mine, choose the 3-night / 4-day itinerary with two nights in Ryotsu.
