Three nights in Niigata: city sights or the mine?

Spend three nights in Niigata if you want to walk the shrine grounds, visit the aquarium, and see the city from above. If mine tunnels interest you more, split your stay into one night in Niigata and two in Ryotsu on Sado. Stay on the island again after visiting the mine and sail back the following day. Choose the return ferry and Niigata port-to-station bus around your next departing train.
