Day 1 · Bandai Bridge and riverside walk
Take a short walk at Bandai Bridge and along the river on arrival day, then stay near Niigata Station.

Head towards Bandai Bridge and Yasuragitei. The city’s official reference time is about five minutes for this section. Choose how far to walk on the bridge and riverside according to your arrival time and the weather.
- Bandai Bridge and Yasuragitei → Niigata Station → booked hotel
Retrace your route towards Bandai City to Niigata Station, then head to your booked hotel to rest. The city’s guide gives about 15 minutes from the riverside to the station, excluding meals, shopping and waits at crossings.

Day 2 · Change at Yoshida and visit Yahiko Shrine
Pass Yahiko Shrine’s torii and stone bridge, explore the grounds, then return to your Niigata hotel. Change trains at Yoshida; after worship and lunch, return to Yahiko Station.

Travel from your booked hotel to Niigata Station. If staying at Hotel Mets, you can use the station’s western connecting passage. Choose a Yoshida-bound JR Echigo Line train. JR travel to Yahiko and back costs extra beyond the route subtotal; check your ticket’s coverage.

Take the Echigo Line to Yoshida and alight. Check your Yahiko-bound train’s departure platform in JR’s guide for your travel date.

Use the stairs and connecting passage shown on the station map to reach the Yahiko-bound platform. The station guide lists no lifts or escalators; ask JR about alternatives if you cannot use stairs.

- Yoshida Station, Yahiko-bound platform → Yahiko Station
Take a Yahiko-bound JR Yahiko Line train and alight at Yahiko. If the previous train was delayed, check your next connection.
- Yahiko Station → First shrine torii → worship hall and grounds
The official guide lists about 1 km or 15 minutes on foot from Yahiko Station to the shrine. Pass the first torii and stone bridge, then the second torii and Zuishinmon Gate. Pay your respects before the worship hall and explore the grounds. Meals and visiting time are additional to the walk.
- Yahiko Station → Change at Yoshida → Niigata Station
After exploring the shrine and village, return to Yahiko Station and take a train to Yoshida. Alight at Yoshida even if the train is bound for Higashi-Sanjo. Change to a Niigata-bound Echigo Line service and return to the station. This route excludes the ropeway, mountain summit and paid treasure exhibition.

Changing at Yoshida involves stairs. Allow time to return to the station after the grounds visit and lunch, and check JR’s return services and fares for your date. Ask the shrine about ordinary grounds worship fees and access hours; plan grounds walks in daylight. The treasure exhibition, requested prayer services and ropeway are excluded from this itinerary.
Day 3 · Marinepia Nihonkai
Observe marine life in the Sea of Japan tank and penguin exhibits today. Indoor exhibits can be visited in rain too.

From stand 9 at Niigata Station’s bus terminal, take C22 bound for Suizokukan-mae and alight at the terminus. The adult one-way fare is JPY 260. Check the return bus to Niigata Station before setting the visit duration.
- Suizokukan-mae bus stop → Front entrance → exhibits and meal
Buy general adult admission at the front ticket desk for JPY 1,500. Usual hours are 09:00–17:00, with ticket sales until 16:30. Visit the large tank and indoor exhibits, allow lunch and rest breaks, and choose shows from that day’s schedule. Meals and additional activities cost extra.

Take a Niigata Station-bound C22 from Suizokukan-mae and alight at the station. Add bus waits and the walk to the stop to visiting time, then return to the same hotel to rest.

If the aquarium is closed, switch to the observation room and market route. If only shows are suspended, focus on exhibits. Check closing days and show times through the facility links in the attraction guide.
Day 4 · Observation room and Pia Bandai
Enjoy city views and a market lunch today. After the observation room, walk to the market, then return on a station-bound bus.

From stand 17 at Niigata Station’s bus terminal, take a Sado Kisen-bound bus via Toki Messe and alight at Toki Messe. The adult one-way fare is JPY 260. Within the terminal, use the second-floor walkway to reach the boarding stand.

Cross the plaza and enter Bandai-jima Building through the Hotel Nikko Niigata and office entrance. On the first floor, take the lift directly to the 31st-floor observation room. Distinguish it from the lifts for hotel and office use. General admission is free; usual hours are 08:00–22:00, with last admission at 21:30. Private hire or events may shorten hours or close the room.

After the market, walk to the regular Niigata Station-bound Pia Bandai-mae stop. Distinguish it from the sightseeing loop bus stop.

Extra costs and conditions: JR return travel from Niigata via Yoshida to Yahiko, hotels, meals, offerings, paid activities, market shopping and long-distance travel cost extra.

Day 2 · Niigata Port to your Ryotsu hotel
Cross to Sado by ferry and stay in Ryotsu. Allow time to reach the port, buy tickets and board, then travel to your hotel after disembarking.

- Sado Kisen bus stop → Passenger terminal → boarding formalities
Walk to the passenger terminal for ticketing and boarding formalities. The bus operator advises completing these at least 30 minutes before departure. The ferry operator recommends arriving about 10–20 minutes before departure with a digital ticket, or 30–40 minutes before when buying at a counter or machine. Allow extra time according to how you buy your ticket.

Take a second-class car ferry to Ryotsu on Sado. Sailing takes about two hours 30 minutes. Check date-specific fares in the route costs below and ferry operator’s guide. Port buses, ticketing, waits and disembarkation are separate from sailing time. The onboard restaurant may be closed, so check that day’s guide if you plan to eat aboard.

- Ryotsu Port ferry terminal → Ryotsu hotel
From Ryotsu Port, head to Guest House Jink as an accommodation option. Its operator lists about four minutes on foot from the terminal.
- Jink accommodation → Port side of Lake Kamo → same hotel
Take a short walk along Lake Kamo near Ryotsu Port, then return to the same hotel. The tourism body’s approximately three minutes from the port bus stop to the lake is an approach time, not a walk around the whole lake. Rest and explore the port area today; this route does not visit the mine.
For a stay near Ryotsu Port, consider Jink, about four minutes on foot from the terminal. If staying elsewhere, check the route from the port to your chosen hotel.
Day 3 · Sado Gold Mine return trip and a Ryotsu stay
Walk through mine tunnels and see mining exhibits today. Afterwards, return by bus to your Ryotsu hotel for another night, then take the ferry to Niigata the next day.

At Ryotsu Port’s Sado Kisen stop, take a Main Line bus bound for Sado Kinzan-mae and alight at the terminus. Not every Main Line service reaches the mine, so check the destination. The adult direct one-way fare is JPY 860.

Head to the mine entrance beside the stop and follow ticketing and admission instructions. The ordinary Sado Gold Mine course costs JPY 1,500 for junior high school students and older visitors, with a suggested visit of 60–90 minutes. April–October, admission starts at 08:00 and ends at 16:00, with site closing at 17:30. November–March, admission starts at 08:30 and ends at 15:30, with closing at 17:00. The route involves stairs; check notices for changes caused by repairs before visiting.

- Sado Kinzan-mae → change at Aikawa → Ryotsu Port → same island hotel
Take a bus from Sado Kinzan-mae to Aikawa, then change for Ryotsu Port. Adult fares are JPY 260 and JPY 860, totalling JPY 1,120. Choose both return services before starting your visit. Return to your Ryotsu hotel for another night; take the ferry the next day.

Day 4 · Ryotsu Port to Niigata Station
Return from Ryotsu to Niigata today. Check hotel-to-port travel and the journey from Niigata Port to the station alongside your ferry.

Return from Ryotsu Port on a Niigata-bound second-class car ferry. Besides roughly two hours 30 minutes sailing, allow for disembarkation and waits for the port bus, leaving enough time for your onward departure from Niigata Station.

After disembarking, walk to the regular Niigata Station-bound Sado Kisen stop. Distinguish it from the prefectural-office-bound stop and temporary event boarding areas.

On the day you leave the island, eat and rest at the port without adding distant attractions. Choose your ferry and the Niigata Station-bound bus after disembarkation together.
Included: Niigata port return bus JPY 520 plus second-class ferry return JPY 7,260, Ryotsu Port → Sado Kinzan-mae bus JPY 860, ordinary Sado Gold Mine course JPY 1,500 and mine → Aikawa → Ryotsu Port return buses JPY 1,120.
Extra costs and conditions: Hotels, meals, long-distance travel, oversized luggage, vehicles, higher cabin classes, jetfoil and extra mine activities cost extra.
This subtotal is for one adult at general rates. The JPY 1,120 mine return uses two bus rides: mine → Aikawa JPY 260 and Aikawa → Ryotsu Port JPY 860. The JPY 7,260 ferry return uses two JPY 3,630 ordinary second-class fares for 1 October–31 December 2026, including fuel adjustments. Frequently asked questions
Do you take the Niigata-bound ferry on the day you return from the mine?
The two-night Ryotsu route visits the mine, returns by bus to the hotel and takes the ferry to Niigata the next day. On ferry return day, leave time for a port meal and rest, and choose the bus from Niigata Port to the station too.

Do mine and island bus hours stay the same in winter?
For the ordinary mine course, April–October admission starts at 08:00 and ends at 16:00, with closing at 17:30. November–March admission starts at 08:30 and ends at 15:30, with closing at 17:00. The island bus example uses the weekday timetable valid 1 April–30 November 2026. For December onwards, weekends or public holidays, check services for that date, including your return.
