Where should you stay and what should you see in Niigata?

Staying near Niigata Station makes it convenient to walk by Bandai Bridge and visit the aquarium or observation room. Choose Marinepia Nihonkai for marine life, or the observation room and Pia Bandai for city views and a market lunch. For shrine worship, take a train trip to Yahiko; for mine tunnels, cross by ferry to Sado.

What would you like to see in Niigata?

Walk with views of Bandai Bridge’s six arches and the river. Observe marine life at Marinepia Nihonkai, or enjoy elevated city scenery at the observation room. Follow the views with lunch at Pia Bandai, or explore a historic house and gardens at the former Saito family villa. Yahiko Shrine’s approach requires a train change; Sado Gold Mine’s tunnels require a ferry and island bus journey.

Day-by-day itineraries

For a short city trip, choose the river and aquarium or observation room. Give a separate train day to Yahiko. Sado overnight routes distinguish the crossing day, island sightseeing day and return-to-Niigata day. Hotels, meals and long-distance travel are excluded from the route subtotal.

Stay one night in Niigata and walk the riverside on day one. On day two, choose aquarium exhibits or the free observation room and harbour market, then return by bus to the station.

3 nights, 4 days

Spend three nights in Niigata City with a day each for Yahiko, the aquarium and observation room. For the mine, stay one night in Niigata and two in Ryotsu, separating the mine day and ferry return.

Where do you depart from Niigata Station?

The aquarium, observation room and port for Sado use different boarding stands. Check both your destination name and return stop.

Aquarium: C22 from stand 9

Take an aquarium-bound C22 from stand 9 at Niigata Station and alight at the aquarium stop. Return on a Niigata Station-bound bus. If choosing the sightseeing loop bus, its direction and timetable differ from the regular route, so do not treat it as the same return service.

Does the JR TOKYO Wide Pass reach Niigata City?

Coverage within Niigata Prefecture does not mean the pass reaches Niigata Station. Check the Joetsu Shinkansen coverage as far as Echigo-Yuzawa. To continue to Niigata Station, compare uncovered train fares separately, along with Sado ferries and buses. For GALA Yuzawa, check seasonal opening notices. Port buses, Sado Kisen, island buses and facility admission also cost extra.
