Two nights in Kobe: Himeji Castle or Arima?

Choose Himeji Castle/Koko-en or bathing at Arima’s Kin no Yu for the middle day of a two-night Kobe stay. Both are day trips from Sannomiya.

Himeji uses JR returns; Arima uses subway and Kobe Electric Railway changes. Both rail routes are separate from the City Loop ticket for Kobe harbour travel.

Kobe harbour, Himeji Castle and Koko-en

Stay two nights in the same Sannomiya accommodation, giving the harbour and Himeji Castle/Koko-en a day each. Explore more waterfront on the final day before departing from Shin-Kobe.

Day 1 · Harbour walk from Meriken Park

Stay two nights in Sannomiya and spend the first day walking the park and harbour. Visit Himeji Castle and Koko-en together the next day.

  1. Sannomiya accommodation and southbound stop 13 → Meriken Park stop 16

Take the City Loop from stop 13, Subway Sannomiya Station (southbound), to Meriken Park stop 16. Distinguish northbound stop 8. Walk past Port Tower’s exterior and the park waterfront. Paid tower admission is excluded. Skip the waterfront walk if on-site controls prevent access.

Day 2 · Morning JR journey to Himeji Castle

Start your Himeji Castle visit in the morning, have lunch outside, then visit Koko-en. Search both Sannomiya–Himeji train directions for your date.

  1. JR Sannomiya → JR Himeji

From JR Sannomiya, take a Special Rapid service towards Himeji, Aboshi or Banshu-Ako and get off at Himeji. Official guidance gives a roughly 40-minute ride; station walking and waiting are extra. Select your morning arrival and return service separately for the actual travel date.

Official JR service/fare search: enter your travel dateHimeji Castle prices, hours and station access

  2. JR Himeji north exit → Himeji Castle

Leave Himeji station by the north exit and walk towards the castle. The official station-to-castle walk is about 20 minutes, excluding ticket queues and movement within the paid area. Look for lunch options between the station and castle, and enter the castle first in the morning.

Himeji Castle prices, hours and station access

  3. Himeji Castle → Castle tower visit → lunch outside

Allow the official FAQ’s roughly 90–120 minutes for the castle, with potentially another hour’s wait when busy. Remove your shoes inside the tower and climb steep stairs; there is no lift. Carry minimal luggage and avoid committing to an interior visit if stairs are difficult. Start in the morning rather than arriving near the 16:00 last admission. Check the ticket’s same-day validity and no-re-entry condition, then eat lunch outside after visiting.

  4. Outside Himeji Castle → Separate Koko-en entrance and garden visit

Visit Koko-en in the afternoon before returning to Kobe. On leaving the castle, use the official access map to find Koko-en’s entrance to its west. Look for the gate in the surrounding wall; this differs from the castle’s paid-area entrance. Allow the separate castle-to-garden walk. Standard hours are 09:00–17:00, last admission 16:30; check event-day hours separately. The cost uses a combined ticket for visiting castle and garden on this day.

Koko-en accessKoko-en prices, hours and closures

  5. Koko-en → JR Himeji → Sannomiya

Koko-en’s official roughly 15-minute walk describes the direction from JR Himeji station to the garden. For the return, check the route from your actual exit at your walking pace, adding station movement and train waiting. At JR Himeji, take a train towards Osaka/Kyoto and get off at Sannomiya. If the castle visit runs late, shorten garden time or find a later return train.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Kobe city bus pass take me to Arima?

The City Loop ticket does not cover the subway and Kobe Electric Railway to Arima. The regular adult one-way fare via Tanigami is JPY 720; count it separately from the City Loop pass.

City Loop fares, passes and sales pointsKobe Electric Railway regular-fare search

Can the same two-day pass cover buses on days 1 and 3?

It covers consecutive days. The three-day Himeji Castle/Koko-en itinerary uses City Loop on days 1 and 3, so one pass does not cover both. Five individual rides are counted at JPY 1,500.

Do I only see the castle before returning from Himeji?
