Southern Hyogo: where should I stay and how should I divide my days?
Spend your harbour-viewing and waterfront-walking day in Kobe, and your castle-tower and Koko-en garden day in Himeji. Choose Arima for a bath or an overnight stay in a hot-spring town.
For one night and two days, you can concentrate on Kobe. To see both Kobe’s harbour and Himeji Castle, stay in Sannomiya and allow a day for Himeji. Arima is within Kobe city, but you cannot walk there from the harbour; put it on a separate day.
Harbour views, mountain gardens, castle or hot springs?
Choose Port Tower for harbour views from above, or Meriken Park and Harborland for waterfront walks. Visit Nunobiki for a ropeway and mountain garden. Combine Himeji Castle and Koko-en for castle interiors and Japanese gardens. In Arima, choose a Kin no Yu bath and return journey, or a night in the hot-spring town.
Itineraries by trip length
For a short stay, choose Kobe’s harbour or herb gardens first. With more days, give Himeji and Arima separate days or consider a local night. Distinguish returning to the same Sannomiya accommodation from moving accommodation.
2 days / 1 night
Choose Port Tower’s observation deck and Harborland, or the daytime herb gardens and Meriken Park. Both itineraries spend one night in Kobe and continue to Shin-Kobe on the final day.
3 days / 2 nights
Stay two nights in Sannomiya and choose Himeji Castle/Koko-en or Arima’s public bath for the middle day. Himeji uses JR; Arima needs Tanigami and Arimaguchi changes for the return trip.
4 days / 3 nights
Choose three nights in the same Sannomiya accommodation for harbour, gardens and Himeji, or an Arima night in the middle. The Arima option returns to Sannomiya next day for another night.
5 days / 4 nights
Compare a Himeji night before a morning castle visit with four Kobe nights and day trips to Himeji and Arima. An Osaka night changes the existing night allocation and your next journey.

Arrange each day after choosing accommodation
Separate days for harbour, mountain gardens, castle and baths
Divide Kobe’s harbour into Meriken Park/Port Tower and Harborland visits, allowing observation viewing and waterfront walking separately. Nunobiki is a ropeway and mountain-top garden day; Himeji is a JR trip west for castle and Koko-en. Arima needs Tanigami and Arimaguchi changes before a public bath or hot-spring stay. Do not fit all four into a short day.

Where to eat after sightseeing
On harbour days, check Harborland shops’ hours for meals. After Himeji Castle, have lunch outside before Koko-en: castle tickets do not allow re-entry. At the herb gardens, allow ticket queues, walking and meals besides the ropeway ride. For Arima accommodation, check whether meals are included and their times. On a public-bath day trip, leave time after bathing and eating to return to the station.

Distinguish City Loop passes from rail tickets
The City Loop to the harbour and herb gardens differs from JR, subway and Kobe Electric Railway. Compare its JPY 800 one-day and JPY 1,200 consecutive two-day passes with actual dates and ride counts. Only paper one-day passes are sold on board. One two-day pass cannot cover non-consecutive days such as days 1 and 3. Separate buses at Kamomeria count as separate boardings. The regular adult one-way Arima fare via Tanigami, JPY 720, includes Sannomiya–Tanigami subway; do not add it again.
If leaving luggage at your accommodation on departure day, allow time to collect it. Choose the final visit to leave time afterwards for your departure station or airport.

Choose your return base before Osaka or Kyoto visits
For a Kobe visit from Osaka or Kyoto, choose your actual departure station and destination in Kobe’s tourism-bureau access search. These itineraries start after arrival at Sannomiya and exclude Osaka/Kyoto hotel return journeys. For a day visit, separately check the route from your chosen Kobe attraction back to the station and the return service. A day trip from Kobe to Osaka or Kyoto replaces an existing day: first check destination station → attraction → station and return to the same Sannomiya accommodation.
An overnight stay elsewhere changes the current Sannomiya/Arima/Himeji night allocation. Check luggage storage, next accommodation’s check-in and station-to-accommodation walk beforehand. For a single sightseeing day elsewhere, reduce attractions to suit return journey time.

Compare JR passes with regular tickets and actual travel days
The itineraries use regular Himeji return fares of JPY 960 × 2 = 1,920. Do not conclude that a JR pass is cheaper for this journey alone. WEST QR Kansai Mini covers eligible local trains for three consecutive days; do not assume it reaches Himeji. For Kansai Area, check your chosen one to four consecutive days and official coverage. Kansai Area excludes Shinkansen; buy separate fare and limited-express tickets for any Shinkansen segment.
Kansai Wide lasts five consecutive days and includes the Sanyo Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Okayama. A Shinkansen option through Shin-Kobe differs from conventional JR boarding at Sannomiya. The Kyoto–Shin-Osaka Tokaido Shinkansen is excluded. For all three products, check foreign-government passport, Temporary Visitor status and actual routes, keeping outward and return journeys within validity. City Loop, Arima subway/Kobe Electric Railway, accommodation and admission are separate.

Kobe, Himeji and Arima: locations and names
Kobe and Himeji are in southern Hyogo Prefecture. Arima Onsen is a hot-spring town within Kobe city.

The Kobe/Himeji/Arima itineraries from one night/two days to four nights/five days exclude Kinosaki and Awaji Island.

Keeping Sannomiya accommodation

One night in Arima

Separate routes from Shin-Kobe and Sannomiya
Shinkansen Shin-Kobe, JR Sannomiya and City Loop stops are different starting points. Distinguish your arrival-station-to-accommodation route from the sightseeing boarding point first.
Shin-Kobe
For the subway to Sannomiya, check Shin-Kobe’s platform and your Sannomiya accommodation walk.
For a Shinkansen departure, also allow the transfer from subway arrival to JR gates and platforms.
Sannomiya to harbour and herb gardens
Use southbound City Loop stop 13 for the harbour or northbound stop 8 for the herb gardens.
For Harborland, change buses at Kamomeria. Check the Sannomiya-bound boarding point for your return.
JR Sannomiya to Himeji
Search a Himeji-bound Special Rapid. Leave Himeji by the north exit towards the castle.
Allow castle/Koko-en visits and returning to the station, then choose an Osaka/Kyoto-bound return train.
Subway Sannomiya to Arima
Change at Tanigami to Kobe Electric Railway, then at Arimaguchi to an Arima Onsen-bound train.
Return via Arimaguchi and Tanigami. Allow comfortable transfer time when choosing both directions.
Osaka or Kyoto to Kobe
Select your actual origin station and Kobe destination in the tourism bureau’s access search.
Allow further travel to attractions after reaching Sannomiya. Decide first whether to return to Osaka/Kyoto that day or stay one night in Kobe.

Himeji and Arima: compare rail journeys first
