Where should I stay and how should I split southern Hyogo?

Spend your harbor-view and waterfront-walking days in Kobe, and your castle-keep and Koko-en garden day in Himeji. Choose Arima for a hot-spring bath or an overnight stay in the onsen town.

For two days, you can focus on Kobe. To combine Kobe's harbor with Himeji Castle, use Sannomiya as a base and allow a day for Himeji. Arima is within Kobe City but is not a neighborhood you can reach on foot from the harbor, so give it a separate day.

Harbor views, hilltop gardens, castle, or onsen?

Choose Port Tower for harbor views from above, or Meriken Park and Harborland for waterfront walks. For a ropeway and hilltop gardens, visit Nunobiki Herb Gardens. Pair Himeji Castle and Koko-en for a castle interior and Japanese garden. In Arima, take a Kin no Yu day bath or spend a night in the onsen town.

Itineraries by trip length

For a short stay, start with Kobe's harbor or herb gardens. With more days, give Himeji and Arima a day each or compare a local overnight stay. Distinguish returning to the same Sannomiya hotel from changing hotels.

2 days, 1 night

Choose Port Tower's observation floors with Harborland, or daytime herb gardens with Meriken Park. Both courses spend one night in Kobe and travel to Shin-Kobe on the final day.

3 days, 2 nights

Spend two nights in Sannomiya and use the middle day for Himeji Castle and Koko-en or an Arima public bath. Himeji uses JR; Arima requires Tanigami and Arimaguchi transfers.

4 days, 3 nights

Keep the same Sannomiya hotel for three nights with separate harbor, garden, and Himeji days, or spend the middle night in Arima. The Arima course returns to Sannomiya the next day for another hotel night.

5 days, 4 nights

Stay a night in Himeji for a morning castle visit, or spend four nights in Kobe with Himeji and Arima day trips. An Osaka night changes the existing hotel allocation and next journey.

Plan your days around your hotel

Give the harbor, hilltop gardens, castle, and onsen separate days

Split Kobe's harbor visits between Meriken Park and Port Tower, and Harborland. Allow separate time for observation-floor viewing and waterfront walks. Nunobiki Herb Gardens is a ropeway and hilltop-garden day; Himeji is a JR trip west for the castle and Koko-en. Arima involves transfers at Tanigami and Arimaguchi before a public bath or onsen overnight stay. Do not fit all four areas into one short day.

Where should I eat after sightseeing?

On a harbor day, check Harborland shops' hours before choosing a meal. After Himeji Castle, eat lunch outside before continuing to Koko-en; castle tickets do not allow re-entry. At the herb gardens, allow time for ticket queues, garden walks, and meals beyond the ropeway ride. For an Arima overnight stay, check whether ryokan meals are included and when they are served. For a public-bath day trip, allow time to return to the station after bathing and eating.

Distinguish City Loop passes from rail tickets

City Loop buses to the harbor and herb gardens are separate from JR, subway, and Kobe Electric Railway services. Compare the ¥800 one-day pass and ¥1,200 consecutive two-day pass against your actual rides and dates. Only paper one-day passes are sold on board. A single two-day pass cannot cover nonconsecutive days such as days one and three. Two buses boarded separately at Kamomeria count as separate rides. The regular adult ¥720 one-way Arima fare via Tanigami already includes the Sannomiya–Tanigami subway journey; do not add it again.

If you leave luggage at your hotel on departure day, allow time to retrieve it. Choose your final sightseeing stop around the remaining journey to your departure station or airport.

Choose your return base for Osaka or Kyoto trips

When traveling to Kobe from Osaka or Kyoto, use the Kobe Tourism Bureau access search with your actual departure station and destination. The courses below start after arrival in Sannomiya; they do not include round trips from Osaka or Kyoto hotels. For a day visit, check the route from your chosen Kobe attraction back to the station and your return service separately. To visit Osaka or Kyoto from Kobe, compare replacing an existing itinerary day. First check the destination station–attraction–station journey and the return to the same Sannomiya hotel.

An overnight stay in another city changes the course's allocation of Sannomiya, Arima, and Himeji nights. Check luggage storage before departure, your next hotel's check-in time, and the walk from its station. For a day-only visit to another city, reduce the number of sights to fit round-trip travel time.

Compare JR passes with regular tickets and your actual travel dates

The itineraries below use a regular Himeji JR round-trip fare of ¥960 × 2 = ¥1,920. That round trip alone does not establish that a JR pass is cheaper. WEST QR Kansai Mini covers eligible local trains for three consecutive days; do not assume it reaches Himeji. For Kansai Area, check the official covered area and your selected one to four consecutive valid days. Kansai Area excludes Shinkansen services. To use a Shinkansen, buy separate base-fare and limited-express tickets for that journey.

Kansai Wide lasts five consecutive days and covers the Sanyo Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Okayama. A Shinkansen journey via Shin-Kobe follows a different route from conventional JR trains boarded at Sannomiya. The Tokaido Shinkansen between Kyoto and Shin-Osaka is excluded. For all three products, check the foreign-government-issued passport and Temporary Visitor requirements and your actual covered journeys. Both outbound and return travel must fall within valid days. Calculate City Loop, the Arima subway/Kobe Electric Railway journey, hotels, and admission separately from these JR passes.

Different evenings at the harbor, Himeji, and Arima

Choose where to spend the evening and sleep as well as what to see. These hotel choices connect to the actual travel order in the trip-length courses.

Keep your Sannomiya hotel

Separate harbor and herb-garden days returning to Sannomiya from a JR Himeji day trip. At the harbor, distinguish Meriken Park and Port Tower from Harborland. After your walk, choose a meal to fit restaurant locations and opening hours.

Distinguish departure points at Shin-Kobe and Sannomiya

Shinkansen station Shin-Kobe, JR Sannomiya, and City Loop stops are different starting points. Distinguish hotel access from your arrival station and the boarding point for sightseeing.

Shin-Kobe

For the subway to Sannomiya, check Shin-Kobe's platforms and your Sannomiya hotel access.

For a Shinkansen departure, allow time after leaving the subway to reach JR gates and platforms.

Sannomiya to the harbor or gardens

Use southbound City Loop stop 13 for the harbor or northbound stop 8 for the herb gardens.

For Harborland, change buses at Kamomeria. Check your Sannomiya-bound boarding point for the return too.

JR Sannomiya to Himeji

Search Himeji-bound Special Rapid services. Leave through Himeji Station's north exit for the castle.

Allow castle and Koko-en viewing and the station return, then choose an Osaka/Kyoto-bound return train.

Sannomiya subway to Arima

Transfer at Tanigami to Kobe Electric Railway, then at Arimaguchi to an Arima-Onsen-bound train.

Return via Arimaguchi and Tanigami too. Allow enough transfer time and choose both outbound and return services.

Osaka or Kyoto to Kobe

Use the tourism bureau's access search with your actual departure station and Kobe arrival point.

Allow time from Sannomiya to attractions too. First decide whether to return to Osaka or Kyoto that day or stay a Kobe night.

Frequently asked questions

Should I fit Kobe, Himeji, and Arima into two days?

For a short stay, start with whichever you most want to see: Kobe's harbor or the herb gardens. Himeji requires a JR trip west, while Arima involves crossing the mountains with two transfers. Allow a separate day for each.
