Five days in Hyogo: stay in Himeji or take a Kobe day trip?
For a morning Himeji Castle visit, choose a course staying in Himeji the night before. To keep one hotel and take separate Himeji and Arima day trips, spend four nights in Sannomiya.
Himeji uses JR; Arima uses subway and Kobe Electric Railway transfers. The Himeji overnight course returns to Sannomiya after the castle and Koko-en, then spends the remaining two nights in Kobe.
Choose an itinerary for 5 days, 4 nights
A Himeji Night for a Morning Castle Visit
Split the stay into one Sannomiya night, one Himeji night, then two more Sannomiya nights. Travel to Himeji the day before the castle visit to begin there the next morning.

- Himeji hotel → Himeji Castle keep and lunch
Head to the castle for its regular 9:00 AM opening. Even an early arrival may face an entry queue. Inside the keep, remove shoes and climb stairs; leave large luggage behind. The official roughly 90–120-minute visit may be extended by crowding. Eat lunch outside after viewing, without re-entering.

After lunch, find Koko-en's separate entrance west of Himeji Castle. Look for the gate within enclosing walls and explore the garden. Regular hours are 9:00 AM–5:00 PM, admission until 4:30 PM; check event-day exceptions. The combined ticket is for both visits today. Return to JR Himeji after the garden. The official roughly 15-minute station-to-garden walk is a different segment from castle-to-garden access.
- JR Himeji → JR Sannomiya and hotel stay
Take an Osaka/Kyoto-bound train from JR Himeji and get off at Sannomiya. Choose your return service in the official route search, then have dinner and stay in Sannomiya tonight.

Frequently asked questions
Does a Himeji night let me visit the castle in the morning?
This course travels to Himeji the day before, sees the exterior, then suggests visiting the keep for its regular 9:00 AM opening. Check walks from the station to your hotel and castle. Even an opening-time arrival may face a queue.
Himeji Castle fees, hours, and station accessHimeji Castle FAQ: viewing time, stairs, and re-entry
Should I add a subway fare to Arima's ¥720?
The verified adult one-way ¥720 fare covers Sannomiya via Tanigami to Kobe Electric Railway's Arima-Onsen Station. Do not add the Sannomiya–Tanigami subway again. Recheck your actual date's regular fare in the operator's search.
Can I visit Himeji Castle and Koko-en in one day from Kobe?
This course leaves Kobe in the morning and visits both before returning. Allow station-to-castle walking, keep stairs and queues, lunch, and garden viewing beyond the JR ride. For more castle time, compare staying in Himeji the night before.

Does a JR pass to Himeji include Arima and the harbor bus?
City Loop and the subway/Kobe Electric Railway journey to Arima cost extra beyond JR passes. Conventional JR from Sannomiya to Himeji and Shinkansen via Shin-Kobe have different routes and pass conditions. Kansai Area excludes Shinkansen; for Kansai Wide, check the valid Sanyo segment and consecutive five days. Compare the ¥1,920 regular JR round trip with pass costs for your actual routes and dates.

How should I change the Kobe itinerary for an Osaka night?
Reduce Kobe nights by the nights spent in Osaka and choose which existing sightseeing day goes to Osaka. Four Sannomiya nights and a Himeji overnight course allocate nights differently. Decide whether to return to Kobe or continue elsewhere the next day, then check JR travel and your next hotel's location and check-in time.
