Southern Hyogo attractions: fees, hours, and access
Choose Meriken Park for coastal walks, or Port Tower for harbor views from above. Consider Harborland for meals and shopping after walking. For a ropeway and hilltop garden, choose Nunobiki Herb Gardens. Allow a day for Himeji Castle and Koko-en to explore a castle interior and Japanese garden together. For bathing in an onsen town, consider Arima's Kin no Yu; check closure days and return trains first. Kinosaki and Awaji Island are excluded from this guide.

Himeji Castle
姫路城
Choose Himeji Castle for a closer look while climbing the keep's interior stairs. Slopes and stairs make this more demanding than a harbor walk.
- AdmissionRegular admission for ages 18 and older is ¥2,500; the resident rate is ¥1,000, and a Koko-en combined ticket is ¥2,600. Do not apply resident prices to visitors. Check official exemption rules for under-18s and the school-year cutoff.

Koko-en

- AdmissionRegular standalone admission for ages 18 and older is ¥400; the Himeji Castle combined ticket is ¥2,600. Entry is free through the end of the school year in which you turn 18.
- HoursThe garden opens 9:00 AM–5:00 PM, with admission until 4:30 PM. It closes December 29 and 30. Check event-day exceptions separately.
- Getting thereOfficial guidance gives about 15 minutes on foot from JR Himeji Station to the garden. Find Koko-en's separate entrance west of Himeji Castle, marked by a gate within enclosing walls. It differs from the castle's paid-area entrance. Do not apply the station-to-garden 15-minute estimate to a walk starting at the castle.
