Southern Hyogo attractions: prices, operations and directions
Choose Meriken Park for a walk facing the sea or Port Tower for harbour views from above. Consider Harborland for food and shopping after walking. Nunobiki Herb Gardens offers a ropeway ride and mountain garden walk. Give Himeji Castle and Koko-en a day for castle interiors and a Japanese garden. Choose Arima Kin no Yu for bathing in a hot-spring town. Check closures and return trains first. Kinosaki and Awaji Island are excluded from this guide.

Choose this for a harbour waterfront walk and views of Port Tower's exterior. Waterfront walks differ from observation deck and facility visits. Check each facility or event's fees and hours separately. Check official Kobe guidance and local restrictions before visiting; skip the walk if waterfront access is closed.

Choose the observation floors for harbour views from above. If you also want to visit the rooftop, check whether you can climb the stairs and the day's weather.
- AdmissionFor high school age and above, observation floors cost JPY 1,000 or JPY 1,200 including the rooftop. Primary and junior high school pupils pay JPY 400 or JPY 500 respectively; preschool children enter free.
- HoursObservation floors and rooftop open from 09:00 to 23:00, with the gate closing at 22:30. Maintenance and private bookings create exceptions. No same-day tickets are available for sold-out dated, timed slots.
- Getting thereGet off at City Loop Port Tower stop 17 and go to the ground-floor ticket and information desk. The rooftop is reached only by stairs from observation floor five. It may open in rain, but umbrellas are prohibited. Rain or strong winds can close it without notice. Check the day's operating notices.

Kobe Harborland

Choose this for food and shopping after a harbour walk. It is a different area from Meriken Park, so allow separate travel and meal time. Facility visits, meals and shopping cost extra. Check individual shop hours if passing through buildings or eating.
- Getting thereThe April 2026 official map places City Loop Harborland stop 1, labelled “in front of MOSAIC”, beside North Mall. Walk via Bentenbashi to MOSAIC and Takahama quay. Allow separate time for the walk and return to the stop.

Kobe Nunobiki Herb Gardens
Kobe Nunobiki Herb Gardens & Ropeway神戸布引ハーブ園/ロープウェイ
Choose Nunobiki Herb Gardens for a mountain garden walk among flowers and herbs. Take the ropeway up for garden scenery that changes with the seasons. The regular return ticket includes herb garden admission. For a garden walk, distinguish the areas open at night from daytime visiting areas.
- AdmissionThe regular return ticket revised on 1 April 2026 costs JPY 2,500 for adults or JPY 1,250 for primary and junior high school pupils, including ropeway travel and garden admission. Christmas prices are separate.
- HoursOn weekdays from 4 September to 6 November 2026, upward services run from 09:30 to 16:45 and the final downward service is 17:15. Garden hours are 10:00–17:00, with last admission at 16:30. Night visits on Saturdays, Sundays and Japanese public holidays have restricted visiting areas.
- Getting thereWalk about five minutes from Shin-Kobe to the lower ropeway station, then ride about ten minutes to the upper station. Waiting is extra; strong winds and lightning may suspend services.

Himeji Castle
姫路城
Choose this for a closer castle visit climbing stairs inside the keep. Slopes and stairs make it more physically demanding than a harbour walk.
- AdmissionOrdinary admission for ages 18 and above is JPY 2,500; the city resident price is JPY 1,000, and the Koko-en combined ticket is JPY 2,600. Do not apply resident prices to travellers. Check official exemption rules for under-18s and school-year boundaries.
- HoursThe castle opens from 09:00 to 17:00, with last admission at 16:00. It closes on 29 and 30 December.
- Getting thereFrom Sannomiya, ride a JR Special Rapid towards Himeji, Aboshi or Banshu-Ako for about 40 minutes, then walk about 20 minutes from Himeji Station to the castle. Station access and waits are extra. The keep has stairs and slopes, with no lift.

Koko-en
好古園
Koko-en has nine gardens with different settings, including a pond garden and tea garden. Walk beside the pond for Japanese garden scenery. Choose the combined ticket if also visiting Himeji Castle, or Koko-en admission if visiting only the garden.
- AdmissionOrdinary admission for ages 18 and above is JPY 400, or JPY 2,600 combined with Himeji Castle. Entry is free until the end of the school year in which a visitor turns 18.
- HoursThe garden opens from 09:00 to 17:00, with last admission at 16:30. It closes on 29 and 30 December. Check event-day exceptions separately.
- Getting thereOfficial directions give about 15 minutes on foot from JR Himeji to the garden. Go to Koko-en's separate entrance west of Himeji Castle. Look for the gate in the surrounding wall, distinct from the castle's paid-area entrance. Do not apply the 15-minute station-to-garden walk to a journey starting at the castle.

Arima Kin no Yu
Kin no Yu金の湯
Arima Kin no Yu is a public bath with brown kinsen hot-spring water. You can visit without staying in hot-spring accommodation. Full bathing costs money; the adjoining footbath is free. Decide between a bath and just the footbath, then check closure dates and return transport to Kobe.
- AdmissionAdults pay JPY 650 on weekdays or JPY 800 otherwise. Busy dates such as New Year, Golden Week and Obon are excluded from weekday pricing. Primary and junior high school pupils pay JPY 350.
- HoursThe bath opens from 08:00 to 22:00, with last admission at 21:30. It closes on the second and fourth Tuesdays each month, or the following day if Tuesday is a Japanese public holiday. It also closes on 1 January.
- Getting thereChange from the subway at Tanigami to Kobe Electric Railway, then at Arimaguchi for Arima Onsen. The facility's April 2023 guide gives about five minutes on foot from the electric railway station to the bath; this differs from the ropeway station. Check operations and actual transfer routes again for your date.

Frequently asked questions
Can I take a lift to the Port Tower rooftop?
The rooftop is reached only by stairs from observation floor five. If stairs are difficult, consider a ticket for observation floors only.
Can I see the same herb gardens in the evening?
Evening visits do not cover all the daytime areas. Hours also vary by season and day of the week. For daytime gardens, check the upward ropeway deadline, garden last admission and final downward service together for your date.
