Five days in Hyogo: stay in Himeji or travel from Kobe and back?

Choose a Himeji night before the castle day to start in the morning. For Himeji and Arima day trips without changing hotels, stay four nights in Sannomiya.

Use JR for Himeji and subway/Kobe Electric Railway changes for Arima. The Himeji overnight itinerary returns to Sannomiya after the castle and Koko-en for the remaining two Kobe nights.

One night in Himeji for a morning castle visit

Spend the first night in Sannomiya, the second in Himeji and the final two in Sannomiya. Move to Himeji the day before the castle visit to start there the following morning.

Day 1 | Kobe harbour

Stay in Sannomiya on day one and walk Meriken Park's waterfront. Skip paid tower admission and prepare to change hotels to Himeji the next day.

  1. Your Sannomiya hotel and southbound stop 13 → Meriken Park stop 16

Take City Loop from southbound stop 13 in front of subway Sannomiya to Meriken Park stop 16. Distinguish it from northbound stop 8. Walk beside the waterfront and see Port Tower's exterior. Paid tower admission is excluded. Skip the walk if local restrictions close waterfront access.

  2. Meriken Park → Kamomeria stop 0 and return to Sannomiya

Find the western Kamomeria Central Terminal on the official map, take City Loop from stop 0 and get off at stop 7, Sannomiya Center Gai East Entrance. Distinguish it from Port Loop stops. Allow the park-to-stop walk and bus waits. Return to your hotel and eat dinner in Sannomiya.

Day 2 | Move to a Himeji hotel

Travel to Himeji, see the castle exterior and stay locally tonight. Leave the keep and gardens for the following morning.

  1. Your Sannomiya hotel and JR Sannomiya → JR Himeji

From JR Sannomiya, take a Special Rapid towards Himeji, Aboshi or Banshu-Ako and get off at Himeji. Official guidance gives about 40 minutes aboard, excluding station access and waits. Search the actual dates separately for your morning Himeji train on day two and return to Sannomiya on day three.

  2. JR Himeji → Castle exterior and one night in Himeji

From Himeji's north exit, walk towards the castle to see its exterior and surroundings. The official station-to-castle walk is about 20 minutes. Leave paid keep and Koko-en admission for tomorrow, and eat lunch and dinner in Himeji. Stay near Himeji Station tonight.

Day 3 | Himeji Castle, Koko-en and return to Kobe

Visit Himeji Castle and Koko-en from the morning, then return by JR to Sannomiya. Divide your time between castle exhibitions and the garden, with dinner in Kobe.

  1. Your Himeji hotel → Himeji Castle keep and lunch

Reach the castle around its regular 09:00 opening. You may still need to queue even when arriving early. Remove your shoes and climb stairs inside the keep, so avoid large luggage. Crowd waits may extend the official 90–120-minute visit estimate. After finishing, eat lunch outside without re-entering.

  2. West of Himeji Castle and separate Koko-en entrance → Koko-en and return to JR Himeji

After lunch, go to Koko-en's separate entrance west of Himeji Castle. Find the gate in the surrounding wall and explore the garden. Regular hours are 09:00–17:00, with last admission at 16:30; check event exceptions. The combined ticket assumes visiting castle and garden together today. Afterwards, return to JR Himeji. The official roughly 15-minute station-to-garden walk differs from the castle-to-garden journey.

  3. JR Himeji → JR Sannomiya and accommodation

Check herb garden operations before leaving. If strong winds or lightning suspend the ropeway, switch to city meals and rest. Frequently asked questions

Can I start at Himeji Castle in the morning if I stay a night in Himeji?

This itinerary moves to Himeji the previous day and sees the castle exterior, then suggests the keep around regular 09:00 opening the following morning. Check walks from the station to your hotel and castle. Queues may form even at opening time.

Should I add subway fares to Arima's JPY 720?

The checked adult JPY 720 one-way fare covers Sannomiya via Tanigami to Kobe Electric Railway Arima Onsen. Do not add the Sannomiya → Tanigami subway again. Recheck ordinary fares in the operator search for your actual date.

Can I visit Himeji Castle and Koko-en in one day from Kobe?

The itinerary leaves Kobe in the morning, visits Himeji Castle and Koko-en the same day and returns. Add the station-to-castle walk, keep stairs, entry queues, lunch and garden time to the JR ride. For a closer castle visit, compare a Himeji night beforehand.

Does a JR pass to Himeji also include Arima and harbour buses?

Calculate Kobe City Loop and Arima subway/Kobe Electric Railway separately from the JR pass. Conventional JR Sannomiya → Himeji and a Shinkansen route via Shin-Kobe have different routes and pass conditions. Kansai Area excludes Shinkansen; for Wide, check valid Sanyo sections and five consecutive days. Compare ordinary JR return JPY 1,920 with pass costs for your actual routes and dates.

How should I divide my Kobe itinerary for a night in Osaka?

Reduce Kobe nights by the nights spent in Osaka, and choose which existing sightseeing day to use there. Four Sannomiya nights and a Himeji overnight route have different hotel allocations. Decide whether to return to Kobe the following day or continue elsewhere, then check JR travel and your next hotel's location and check-in.
