Southern Hyogo travel: where should you stay and how should you divide your days?
Spend harbour-view and waterfront walking days in Kobe, and give Himeji a day for its castle keep and Koko-en garden. Choose Arima for a hot-spring bath or a night in the spa town.
You can focus on Kobe city for a one-night, two-day trip. To see both Kobe's harbour and Himeji Castle, use Sannomiya as a base and give the castle a separate day. Arima is within Kobe City, but it is not a neighbourhood you can walk to from the harbour, so visit on a different day.
Harbour views, mountain gardens, castle or hot springs?
Choose Port Tower for harbour views from above, or Meriken Park and Harborland for waterfront walks. Visit Nunobiki Herb Gardens for a ropeway ride and mountain gardens. Combine Himeji Castle and Koko-en for castle interiors and a Japanese garden. In Arima, take a Kin no Yu bath day trip or stay a night in the hot-spring town.
Itineraries by trip length
For a short stay, start with Kobe's harbour or herb gardens. With more days, compare separate Himeji and Arima day trips or local overnight stays. Distinguish itineraries returning to the same Sannomiya hotel from those changing hotels.
1 night, 2 days
Choose Port Tower views and Harborland, or daytime herb gardens and Meriken Park. Both itineraries stay one night in Kobe and travel to Shin-Kobe on the final day.
2 nights, 3 days
Stay two nights in Sannomiya and compare a middle day at Himeji Castle and Koko-en with an Arima public bath day. Himeji uses JR; Arima returns via Tanigami and Arimaguchi changes.
3 nights, 4 days
Choose three nights at the same Sannomiya hotel for separate harbour, herb garden and Himeji days, or spend the middle night in Arima. The Arima overnight route returns to Sannomiya for another night the following day.
4 nights, 5 days
Compare a Himeji night followed by a morning castle visit with four Kobe nights and Himeji and Arima day trips. A night in Osaka changes your existing hotel allocation and onward journey.

Arima Onsen
Choose an Arima stay if you want to spend the evening in the hot-spring town without travelling far after bathing. Kin no Yu's fee covers public bath admission. Check ryokan accommodation, meals, bath access and check-in time separately with your booked property.

Choose your base, then divide your days
Give separate days to the harbour, mountaintop, castle and hot springs
Explore Meriken Park and Port Tower separately from Harborland in Kobe's harbour. Allow separate time for observation deck visits and waterfront walks. Nunobiki Herb Gardens is a ropeway journey and mountain garden day; Himeji is a JR journey west for the castle and Koko-en. Arima needs changes at Tanigami and Arimaguchi before a public bath or hot-spring stay. Do not fit all four into one short day.

Where should you eat after visiting?
On a harbour walking day, check Harborland shop hours for meals. After Himeji Castle, eat lunch outside before Koko-en; castle tickets do not permit re-entry. At the herb gardens, allow ticket queues, garden walks and meal time beyond the ropeway ride. For an Arima stay, check whether ryokan meals are included and when served. For a public bath day trip, allow time to return to the station after bathing and eating.

Distinguish City Loop passes from rail tickets
City Loop to the harbour and herb gardens is separate from JR, subway and Kobe Electric Railway. Compare the JPY 800 one-day pass and JPY 1,200 two-consecutive-day pass against actual rides and dates. Only paper one-day passes are sold aboard buses. Do not apply one two-day pass to non-consecutive dates such as days one and three. The two buses used for a Kamomeria change are separate boardings. The ordinary adult Arima fare of JPY 720 one way via Tanigami includes the Sannomiya → Tanigami subway, so do not add it again.
If storing luggage at your hotel on departure day, allow time to return and collect it. Choose the final attraction around the time needed to reach your departure station or airport afterwards.

From Osaka or Kyoto, choose your return base first
When coming to Kobe from Osaka or Kyoto, use the Kobe tourism bureau access search with your actual starting station and destination. The itineraries below start after arrival in Sannomiya and do not cover return travel to an Osaka or Kyoto hotel. For a day trip, check the attraction-to-station route and return services separately. For an Osaka or Kyoto day trip from Kobe, replace an existing day and first check destination station → attraction → station and the return to the same Sannomiya hotel.
A night in another city changes the existing Sannomiya, Arima or Himeji hotel allocation. Before leaving, check luggage storage, next-hotel check-in and station-to-hotel walks. For a day trip, reduce attractions to fit return travel time.

Compare JR passes with ordinary tickets for your actual dates
The itineraries below give ordinary Himeji JR return fares of JPY 960 × 2 = JPY 1,920. Do not assume a JR pass is cheaper for that return alone. WEST QR Kansai Mini covers ordinary trains in its valid area for three consecutive days; do not assume it reaches Himeji. For Kansai Area, check the chosen one to four consecutive valid days and official coverage. Kansai Area excludes Shinkansen travel, which requires separate travel and limited express tickets for the section.
Kansai Wide covers five consecutive days and the Sanyo Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Okayama. A Shinkansen route via Shin-Kobe differs from JR conventional lines boarded at Sannomiya. The Tokaido Shinkansen between Kyoto and Shin-Osaka is excluded. For all three products, check foreign government-issued passport and Temporary Visitor eligibility, actual coverage, and that outward and return dates are valid. Calculate City Loop, Arima subway/Kobe Electric Railway, accommodation and admission separately from these JR passes.

A night in Arima
An overnight stay lets you spend the evening in the hot-spring town, unlike a Kin no Yu day trip. Fit ryokan meals and baths around your booked product and serving times. In the three-night itinerary, return via Tanigami to Sannomiya the next day, visit Harborland and spend another night in Kobe.

Separate your routes from Shin-Kobe and Sannomiya
Shinkansen Shin-Kobe, JR Sannomiya and City Loop stops are different starting points. First distinguish arrival-station-to-hotel travel from the boarding point for sightseeing.
Shin-Kobe
For the subway to Sannomiya, check the platform within Shin-Kobe and the walk from Sannomiya to your hotel.
Before a Shinkansen departure, also allow time after leaving the subway to reach JR's gates and platform.
Sannomiya to the harbour or herb gardens
Use southbound City Loop stop 13 for the harbour, or northbound stop 8 for the herb gardens.
For Harborland, change buses at Kamomeria. Check the Sannomiya-bound stop for the return.
JR Sannomiya to Himeji
Search Special Rapid trains towards Himeji. Leave Himeji through the north exit and walk to the castle.
Allow castle and Koko-en visiting time and the walk back to the station, then choose an Osaka- or Kyoto-bound return train.
Subway Sannomiya to Arima
Change at Tanigami to Kobe Electric Railway, then at Arimaguchi to an Arima Onsen-bound train.
Return via Arimaguchi and Tanigami. Allow plenty of transfer time and choose services both ways.
Osaka or Kyoto to Kobe
Choose your actual starting station and Kobe destination in the tourism bureau access search.
Allow travel from Sannomiya to your attraction. Decide first between a same-day Osaka/Kyoto return and a night in Kobe.

Frequently asked questions
Should I fit Kobe, Himeji and Arima into two days?
For a short stay, start with your preference between Kobe's harbour and herb gardens. Himeji is a JR journey west; Arima crosses the mountains with two train changes. Give each a separate day.
