Three days in Kobe: Himeji Castle or Arima?

For three days in Kobe, choose a middle day at Himeji Castle and Koko-en or bathing at Arima Kin no Yu. Both use two nights in Sannomiya and a day trip.

Himeji uses JR return travel; Arima uses subway and Kobe Electric Railway changes. Both rail routes are separate from City Loop tickets around Kobe's harbour.

Kobe harbour, Himeji Castle and Koko-en

Spend two nights at the same Sannomiya hotel and give separate days to the harbour and Himeji Castle with Koko-en. Explore more of the harbour before leaving from Shin-Kobe on the final day.

Day 1 | Harbour walk from Meriken Park

Stay two nights in Sannomiya and walk the park and harbour on day one. Visit Himeji Castle and Koko-en together the following day.

  1. Your Sannomiya hotel and southbound stop 13 → Meriken Park stop 16

Take City Loop from southbound stop 13 in front of subway Sannomiya to Meriken Park stop 16. Distinguish it from northbound stop 8. Walk beside the waterfront and see Port Tower's exterior. Paid tower admission is excluded. Skip the walk if local restrictions close waterfront access.

  2. Meriken Park → Kamomeria stop 0 and return to Sannomiya

Find the western Kamomeria Central Terminal on the official map, take City Loop from stop 0 and get off at stop 7, Sannomiya Center Gai East Entrance. Distinguish it from Port Loop stops. Allow the park-to-stop walk and bus waits. Return to your hotel and eat dinner in Sannomiya.

Day 2 morning | JR to Himeji Castle

Give the morning to Himeji Castle, eat lunch outside, then visit Koko-en. Search outward and return Sannomiya ↔ Himeji trains separately for your date.

  1. JR Sannomiya → JR Himeji

From JR Sannomiya, take a Special Rapid towards Himeji, Aboshi or Banshu-Ako and get off at Himeji. Official guidance gives a ride of about 40 minutes, excluding station access and waits. Search your actual date and choose morning arrival and return services separately.

Official JR timetable and fare search: enter your travel dateHimeji Castle prices, hours and station access

  2. JR Himeji Station north exit → Himeji Castle

Leave Himeji Station through the north exit and walk towards the castle. Official station-to-castle guidance gives about 20 minutes, excluding ticket queues and movement within paid areas. Look for lunch options between the station and castle, and enter the castle first in the morning.

  3. Himeji Castle → Castle keep, then lunch outside

Use the official FAQ's roughly 90–120-minute visit estimate, but allow around an extra hour of waiting when busy. Inside the keep, remove your shoes and climb steep stairs; there is no lift. Carry minimal luggage. If stairs are difficult, do not finalise the itinerary on the assumption of entering the keep. Start in the morning rather than arriving close to 16:00 last admission. Check same-day ticket validity and no re-entry conditions, then eat lunch outside after finishing the visit.

  4. Outside Himeji Castle → Separate Koko-en entrance and garden visit

Explore Koko-en in the afternoon before returning to Kobe. After leaving the castle, use the official access map to find Koko-en's entrance west of the castle. Look for the gate in the surrounding wall; it differs from the castle's paid-area entrance. Allow a separate walk between castle and garden. Regular garden hours are 09:00–17:00, with last admission at 16:30; check event-day operations separately. The cost for visiting both today uses a combined ticket.

  5. Koko-en → JR Himeji and Sannomiya

Koko-en's official roughly 15-minute walk runs from JR Himeji Station to the garden. For the return, check the route from your actual exit at your walking pace, adding station access and train waits. Take an Osaka- or Kyoto-bound train from JR Himeji and get off at Sannomiya. If the castle visit runs late, shorten the garden stay or find a later return train.
