Stay two nights in Mito for unhurried historic-school visits and garden walks. Visit Kodokan on day one, Hitachi Seaside Park on day two and Kairakuen on the final day. The two historic sights are on separate days.

Day 1: Kodokan, then stay in Mito

    Take a Hitachi or Tokiwa limited express stopping at Mito from Tokyo Station. Prepare a basic fare ticket and ordinary-class reserved-seat limited-express ticket. Check your actual date’s departure service and stops in the official timetable.

  2. Mito Station North Exit → Kodokan side entrance

    Go straight along the north deck and down the stairs at its end. Turn right at the ginkgo tree, pass Keisei Hotel on your left and climb Ichōzaka. Turn right beside Sannomaru Primary School. Enter between the fences on the left and check in at the side entrance to the right of the closed main gate. This follows the official photo directions.

    Explore the historic school’s Seicho, Shizendo and garden. October hours are 09:00–16:30; adult admission is JPY 420.

  4. Kodokan → Mito Station North Exit

    After visiting, retrace your walk to the station area for lunch and accommodation. This plan does not also visit Kairakuen that day.

Day 2: Hitachi Seaside Park

  1. Mito Station → Katsuta Station

    Take an ordinary JR Joban Line train from Mito towards Katsuta and alight one stop later. The adult paper-ticket reference fare is JPY 200.

  2. Katsuta Station East Exit stop 2 → Hitachi Seaside Park West Gate stop

    Take a bus towards Seaside Park South Gate via City Hall and Joyful Honda, but alight at West Gate. The adult one-way fare is JPY 450. This course does not continue to South Gate.

    Collect a park map, walk towards Miharashi no Oka and have lunch and rests inside. October hours are 09:30–17:00; the adult seasonal price for 9 October–3 November 2026 is JPY 800. Flowering and kochia colours vary by visit date. Rides, rental bicycles and Seaside Train cost extra.

  5. Hitachi Seaside Park West Gate stop 1 → Katsuta Station

    After exiting West Gate, take a Katsuta Station-bound bus from stop 1 via Joyful Honda and City Hall. The adult one-way fare is JPY 450.

    Take an inbound JR Joban Line train towards Mito and Tsuchiura and alight at Mito. The adult paper-ticket reference fare is JPY 200. If the bus is delayed, check the next train.

Check the park calendar and services stopping at West Gate. If the return bus is delayed, check the next Mito train at Katsuta. Stay another night in Mito.

Day 3: Kairakuen and return to Tokyo

    Follow day one’s Kodokan approach to stop 1. Take the Kairakuen-bound bus without entering Kodokan again.

    Take route 10’s Kairakuen-bound loop bus from Kodokan stop 1 to Kobuntei Omotemon-iriguchi. The adult one-way fare is JPY 270. Walk towards the main garden’s Omotemon Gate after alighting.

  3. Kobuntei Omotemon-iriguchi stop → Kairakuen main garden, Omotemon Gate

    Follow Omotemon signs to the main garden ticket office. Official guidance gives about five to eight minutes. Distinguish the Kobuntei building entrance from the main garden entrance.

    Enter at Omotemon, walk through bamboo and large cedar areas and see the garden around Kobuntei. Entry inside Kobuntei is excluded. October main-garden hours are 07:00–18:00; adult admission outside the plum festival period is JPY 320.

    Exit through Omotemon and retrace your walk to Kobuntei Omotemon-iriguchi stop 1.

    If luggage is at your accommodation, collect it within its collection hours and return to Mito Station. Allow time for local buses, rail and accommodation access, then choose a reserved seat on a Shinagawa-bound Hitachi or Tokiwa stopping at Tokyo. Board at Mito and alight at Tokyo Station.

Two Mito nights with historic sights, waterfall and aquarium

Combine Kodokan and Kairakuen on day one, then visit Fukuroda Falls on day two and the aquarium on the final day. This replaces three-day A’s park with waterfall and aquarium. Stay two nights in Mito; the waterfall approach includes about 40 minutes’ walking from the station.

  2. Fukuroda Station → Fukuroda Falls viewing-tunnel entrance

    Use the map outside the station to locate Fukuroda Primary School and the route east towards Takimoto and the waterfall, then follow signs on site. The tourism association gives about 40 minutes from station to falls. Leave time for walking and admission formalities.

  3. Fukuroda Falls → First and second viewing platforms

    Pay JPY 500 adult admission at the viewing-tunnel ticket office. See the falls from the first platform inside the tunnel and the second, reached by lift. October hours are 08:00–18:00. Lift queues and water volume depend on that day’s conditions.

  4. Fukuroda Falls → Takimoto stop 1

    Have lunch and a rest outside the tunnel after visiting, then head to Takimoto stop. The tourism association gives about ten minutes from falls to stop. Check Fukuroda Station-bound services at boarding point 1 and distinguish other Fukuroda stops along the road.

  5. Takimoto stop 1 → Outside Fukuroda Station

    Take a Fukuroda Station-bound bus. The adult one-way fare is JPY 260. Check your date’s bus timetable for a service connecting with a Mito-bound train.

Day 3: Aquarium and return to Tokyo

    Take the Umimachi Line sightseeing-route bus to Aqua World Oarai. The adult single fare is JPY 200. Distinguish other loop routes that do not stop at the aquarium.

Do I board a bus immediately after alighting at Fukuroda?

In this course, walk approximately 40 minutes from the station to the falls, as officially listed. To use a bus instead, check your date’s train arrival and waterfall-bound departure together. Return by walking to Takimoto, taking the station-bound bus and changing to a Mito train. Connections are not guaranteed after delays.
