Which Ibaraki walks and exhibitions should I choose?
Choose Kairakuen for bamboo and large cedar walks, or Kodokan for historic school buildings. Walk flower fields in Hitachi Seaside Park or see sharks and jellyfish at Oarai Aquarium. Kairakuen Garden偕楽園
Walk slowly among Kairakuen’s bamboo and large cedars. For plum blossoms, check flowering information for your date. Garden admission and entry inside Kobuntei use different tickets.

- DirectionsWalk from Mito Station North Exit towards Kodokan to stop 1. Take route 10’s Kairakuen-bound loop bus to Kobuntei Omotemon-iriguchi, then walk about five to eight minutes to the main garden’s Omotemon Gate. Return from the same stop 1 towards Mito Station North Exit. Distinguish East Gate and the Kobuntei building entrance.

Kodokan
弘道館
Kodokan was a Mito domain school teaching samurai academic subjects and martial arts. Explore its historic Seicho and Shizendo buildings for a look at the school. There are changes in level indoors and out; check official accessibility information first if you need mobility assistance.

- HoursKodokan opens from 09:00 to 17:00 from 20 February to 30 September and from 09:00 to 16:30 from 1 October to 19 February. It is closed from 29 to 31 December.
- DirectionsTurn right from Mito Station’s gates for the North Exit, then follow the deck and Ichōzaka. The main gate is closed; enter reception through the side entrance on its right. Check the official photo directions.

Hitachi Seaside Park
国営ひたち海浜公園
Choose Hitachi Seaside Park for relaxed flower walks and photos. Walk around the park to see Miharashi no Oka’s flowers and kochia. Allow time to walk from the entrance to your chosen area and rest along the way. Flowering and red kochia colours depend on date and weather.
- AdmissionAdmission costs JPY 450 for visitors of senior high-school age and older. Seasonal charges increase this to JPY 800 on 3 April–6 May and 9 October–3 November 2026. Visitors of junior high-school age and younger enter free. Rides and rental bicycles cost extra.
- HoursThe park opens at 09:30 and closes at 17:00 from 1 March to 17 July and in September–October, at 18:00 from 18 July to the end of August, and at 16:30 from November to the end of February. It is usually closed on Tuesdays; the official October 2026 calendar lists daily opening. Check other years and months separately.
- DirectionsTake a bus from Katsuta Station East Exit stop 2 to Seaside Park West Gate (海浜公園西口). The bus journey takes about 15 minutes.

Aqua World Oarai Aquarium
Aqua World Ibaraki Prefectural Oarai Aquariumアクアワールド茨城県大洗水族館
Visit Aqua World Oarai’s shark and jellyfish exhibits and large tank for a closer look at aquatic life. Return to Mito after the daytime visit. Evening events need separate tickets; daytime admission does not allow you to stay through them.
- AdmissionAdmission costs JPY 2,300 for adults, JPY 1,100 for primary and junior high-school students and JPY 400 for preschool children aged three and older.
- HoursOrdinary hours are 09:00–17:00, with last admission at 16:00. The aquarium is closed for maintenance from 7 to 11 December 2026. Date- and time-specific admission may apply on busy days.
- DirectionsTake Umimachi Line (うみまちライン)’s sightseeing route (観光ルート) from Oarai Station to Aqua World Oarai (アクアワールド・大洗), about one minute’s walk from the facility. The bus takes about 20 minutes and costs JPY 200 per adult ride. Other loop routes do not stop at the aquarium.
- MealsThe food court is scheduled to close from 1 November 2026 to mid-March 2027. Arrange a separate lunch plan during this period.

Fukuroda Falls
袋田の滝
See Fukuroda Falls from different heights at the first and second viewing platforms. Travel to and from Mito on the Suigun Line; this is a viewing visit rather than a mountain summit hike. Arrange the station walk and return bus and train together.
- AdmissionIndividual admission costs JPY 500 for adults and JPY 300 for primary and junior high-school students. These viewing-facility charges apply from 1 July 2025 and include both viewing platforms.
- HoursOpening hours are 08:00–18:00 in May–October, 08:00–17:00 in November and 09:00–17:00 in December–April. The viewing facilities normally operate throughout the year; check temporary changes on the day.
- Station, bus and entrance connectionsOfficial walking guidance gives about 40 minutes from JR Fukuroda Station or ten minutes from Takimoto bus stop. This course walks out and returns on a JPY 260 Fukuroda Station-bound bus from Takimoto stop 1. Enter through the viewing tunnel and use the lift inside for the second platform.
- Dates and connection conditionsThe Mito–Fukuroda one-way JR reference fare is JPY 1,040 from an Ekinet search on 8 October 2026. Connect the return bus and Mito train using your actual date’s timetables; if delayed, check later services. Stay in Mito after the waterfall day.

Mito City Museum

Visit Mito City Museum for city history and everyday utensils alongside the historic school buildings. Five-day B combines Kodokan and Kairakuen on day one and visits the museum on day two. Check exhibition content and dates for your visit.

- DirectionsThe museum is at 3-3-20 Omachi, Mito, in the same building as the Central Library. In five-day B, walk to the museum and back from Mito Station’s north side using the city map and signs on site. Distinguish library reception from the museum entrance.

Does Hitachi Seaside Park always cost JPY 450?
Adult admission is JPY 800 during the designated 2026 seasonal-price periods. Rides and rental bicycles are extra.
Can I use an Oarai Aquarium daytime ticket for an evening event?
Leave after the daytime visit and re-enter with a separate evening-event ticket. Daytime admission does not allow you to stay into the evening event.
Does Fukuroda Falls still cost JPY 300 per adult?
No. Individual adult admission is JPY 500 from 1 July 2025, including both viewing platforms.
