Where should I spend an extra day in five days in Ibaraki?
Give Kodokan and Kairakuen separate days, or combine them on day one and see Mito City Museum’s city-history exhibitions and displays of everyday utensils on day two. With either plan, stay four nights in Mito and give Hitachi Seaside Park, Fukuroda Falls and Oarai Aquarium a day each.
Choose an itinerary for 5 days / 4 nights
Five days and four Mito nights, including Fukuroda Falls
Stay four nights in Mito for separate, relaxed school and garden days plus the waterfall. Visit Kodokan and Kairakuen on separate days and give park, waterfall and aquarium a day each. Stay in Mito after the waterfall rather than connecting directly with a Tokyo-bound limited express.

Combine Kodokan and Kairakuen on day one, then add Mito City Museum’s history and folk-life exhibitions on day two. Give park, waterfall and aquarium a day each and stay four nights in Mito. Frequently asked questions
Do five-day transport and admission costs include accommodation?
No. Both plans’ JPY 17,760 is an October adult reference total for Tokyo–Mito return limited express, transport to the park, waterfall and aquarium and admission to Kodokan, the garden, park, waterfall and aquarium. Four nights’ accommodation, meals and travel to Tokyo Station are extra. Museum permanent exhibitions are free; special exhibitions are excluded. How do museum visits differ from Kodokan?
Kodokan is a historic educational facility. The museum’s 2026 permanent exhibitions cover the Mito Tokugawa family, Showa-era city history, food utensils and horse-shaped folk toys. The museum plan visits both sections on day two. Scheduled dates are 13 June 2026–late May 2027; check closures and exhibition changes. This content is not displayed indefinitely. Outside that period or during exhibition changes or closures, check new free exhibitions for your date. If unconfirmed, choose separate Kodokan and Kairakuen days. Special exhibitions cost extra.

Can one TOKYO Wide Pass cover Tokyo–Mito return travel over five days?
Departure on day one and return on day five do not both fit one consecutive three-day pass. Even using a pass for the middle three days leaves Tokyo–Mito limited express at both ends extra. Park buses, Oarai’s Kashima Rinkai Railway and sightseeing buses, waterfall return buses and admission are excluded. Both five-day plans calculate ordinary tickets without a pass.
