Where should I stay and what should I see in Ibaraki?
Start with Kodokan and Kairakuen in Mito for a relaxed trip around a historic school and garden. Choose Hitachi Seaside Park for flower walks and photos, or Oarai Aquarium for a closer look at sharks and jellyfish. Give Fukuroda in Daigo a day for waterfall views from different heights. Visit park, aquarium and waterfall on separate days. These plans start at Tokyo Station, stay near Mito Station and return to Mito on the final day for a limited express to Tokyo.
Choose garden, aquatic life or waterfall first
Compare Kodokan and Kairakuen in Mito with Hitachi Seaside Park, Oarai Aquarium and Fukuroda Falls nearby. Bus entrances and seasonal prices differ. Choose sights from the attraction guide, then fit them into the itineraries below.
Daily itineraries
Choose long flower walks, sharks and jellyfish at the aquarium or a Fukuroda Falls outing first. All plans stay in Mito and return to Tokyo Station. With another day, add a sight or give Kodokan and Kairakuen separate days for slower visits.
2 days / 1 night
Combine Kodokan and Kairakuen on day one, then focus on either park (A) or aquarium (B) on day two. This short trip does not add the waterfall.
3 days / 2 nights
A gives Kodokan, park and Kairakuen a day each. B combines the historic sights on day one, visits the waterfall on the middle day and the aquarium on the final day.
4 days / 3 nights
Choose the plan without the waterfall for separate days at Mito’s historic school and garden. To include Fukuroda Falls, combine them on day one and give the waterfall a day. With either plan, stay three nights in Mito and visit the park and aquarium on separate days.
5 days / 4 nights
Give Kodokan and Kairakuen separate relaxed days, or combine them on day one and add Mito City Museum’s free history and folk-life exhibitions. Check exhibition dates and museum opening for that option first. Both give park, waterfall and aquarium a day each.

Check connection time and seasonal costs
Check bus and rail timetables together for returns from park and aquarium. For Fukuroda Falls, official guidance gives about 40 minutes’ walking from the station. Return via Takimoto bus and the Mito-bound train at Fukuroda; check later services if delayed. Costs are October adult paper basic-fare and limited-express reference prices with tickets bought in advance. Park admission of JPY 800 applies to 9 October–3 November 2026; Kairakuen main-garden JPY 320 applies outside the plum festival period. Accommodation, meals and extra experiences are separate.

Do ordinary tickets or a pass suit this course?
Compare Tokyo–Mito limited express and JR travel between Mito and Katsuta or Fukuroda within JR TOKYO Wide Pass coverage. The adult pass costs JPY 16,000 for three consecutive days. An original passport issued by a country other than Japan is required; temporary-visitor status is not required for this pass. Reserve ordinary-class seats. Kashima Rinkai Railway, buses to the park, garden, aquarium and waterfall, facility admission, accommodation and meals are excluded.
The itineraries calculate ordinary tickets as JPY 8,000 for Tokyo–Mito return limited express, JPY 400 for Mito–Katsuta return JR when visiting the park and JPY 2,080 for Mito–Fukuroda return JR when visiting the waterfall. Together, these JR journeys total JPY 10,480, below the JPY 16,000 pass. The pass is not the cheaper choice for this course alone. This comparison uses adult paper tickets, ordinary-class reserved seats bought in advance and October sample fares; it is not a new booking quote. If adding other JR travel, recalculate the covered sections and dates.
Four- and five-day trips spread Tokyo departure and return over four and five days respectively; one consecutive three-day pass cannot cover the entire return journey. Do not simply subtract the existing course total from the pass price. Compare ordinary-ticket sections plus separate city transport and facility costs together.
