Where should you stay and what should you see in Ibaraki?
Start with Mito’s Kodokan and Kairakuen for leisurely visits to a historic school and garden. Choose Hitachi Seaside Park for flower-field walks and photos, or Oarai Aquarium for sharks and jellyfish up close. For waterfall views from different heights, give Fukuroda in Daigo a day. Park, aquarium and waterfall visits fall on separate days. Start at Tokyo Station, stay near Mito Station and return to Mito on the last day for a Tokyo-bound limited express.
Choose gardens, marine life or waterfalls first
Compare Kodokan and Kairakuen in Mito with outings to the park, aquarium and falls. Bus entrances and seasonal fees differ. Choose attractions in the visitor guidance, then fit them into the itineraries below.
Day-by-day itineraries
Choose longer flower-field walks, sharks and jellyfish, or Fukuroda first. All itineraries stay in Mito and return to Tokyo Station. Another day allows an extra attraction or leisurely visits to Kodokan and Kairakuen on separate days.
1 night, 2 days
Visit Kodokan and Kairakuen first, then focus on the park in itinerary A or the aquarium in B. This short trip does not add the falls.
2 nights, 3 days
A gives Kodokan, park and Kairakuen a day each. B combines history sights first, visits the falls in the middle and aquarium last.
3 nights, 4 days
Choose the itinerary without the falls for separate school and garden days. To include Fukuroda, combine both history sights first and give the falls a day. Both itineraries stay three nights in Mito and visit the park and aquarium separately.
4 nights, 5 days
Give Kodokan and Kairakuen separate days, or visit both first and add the museum’s free history and folk displays. Confirm display dates and opening for the museum option. Both itineraries give the park, falls and aquarium a day each.

Choose a hotel for consecutive nights near Mito Station
All routes stay near Mito Station and return daily from park, Oarai and Fukuroda. Hotel Mets Mito is an accommodation example. For final-day luggage storage, check your chosen hotel’s hours/fees and collection route before the Tokyo train.
Check connection time and seasonal costs
Check buses/trains together for park/aquarium returns. Walk about 40 minutes from Fukuroda Station to the falls under official guidance. Return via Takimoto bus and Mito-bound trains; after delays, check the next service. Costs use October adult paper-ticket/advance limited-express reference fares. Park JPY 800 applies to 9 October–3 November 2026; Kairakuen main garden JPY 320 applies outside the plum festival. Hotels, meals and extras are separate.

Ordinary tickets or a pass for these routes?
Compare Tokyo–Mito limited express and Mito–Katsuta/Fukuroda JR within JR Tokyo Wide Pass coverage. Adult price is JPY 16,000 for three consecutive days. An original passport issued outside Japan is required; no Temporary Visitor condition applies. Reserve ordinary-car seats. Kashima Rinkai Railway, park/garden/aquarium/falls buses, admission, hotels and meals are excluded.
These ordinary-ticket calculations use Tokyo–Mito return limited express JPY 8,000, Mito–Katsuta return JR JPY 400 for the park and Mito–Fukuroda return JR JPY 2,080 for the falls. All three JR sections total JPY 10,480, below the JPY 16,000 pass. The pass is therefore not recommended as cheaper solely for these routes. This compares October sample adult paper fares/advance ordinary-car reserved seats, not a new booking quote. With other JR journeys, recalculate actual coverage and dates.
Four- and five-day routes place Tokyo departure/return across four/five days; one three-consecutive-day pass cannot cover the full return trip. Do not simply subtract existing route totals from the pass price. Compare ordinary-ticket sections with separate city transport and facility costs too.

All eight two- to five-day itineraries stay near Mito Station. On separate days, visit the park by JR to Katsuta and a bus, the aquarium by railway to Oarai and a sightseeing bus, and the falls by Suigun trains and walking. Four days let you combine the history sights first and give each outing a day. Five days let you separate the history sights or add the museum.
