Ibaraki Travel: Where to Stay and What to See
Start with Kodokan and Kairakuen in Mito for an unhurried visit to a historic school and garden. Choose Hitachi Seaside Park for flower-field walks and photography, Aqua World Oarai for sharks and jellyfish, or a day trip to Fukuroda in Daigo to see the falls from different heights. Give the park, aquarium, and falls separate days. These itineraries start at Tokyo Station, use a hotel near Mito Station, and return to Mito on the final day for a Tokyo-bound limited express.
Choose between Gardens, Aquatic Life, and Falls
Compare Kodokan and Kairakuen in Mito with Hitachi Seaside Park, Oarai Aquarium, and Fukuroda Falls nearby. Bus-served entrances and seasonal fares differ. Choose your sights in the attraction guide, then fit them into an itinerary below.
Daily itineraries
Decide whether you want a long walk through the park's flower fields, sharks and jellyfish at the aquarium, or a trip to Fukuroda Falls. Every itinerary stays in Mito and returns to Tokyo Station. An extra day can add a sight or give Kodokan and Kairakuen a day each.
2 days, 1 night
Visit Kodokan and Kairakuen together on the first day, then focus on the park (A) or aquarium (B) on the second. These shorter trips do not add the falls.
3 days, 2 nights
Option A gives Kodokan, the park, and Kairakuen a day each. Option B combines the two historic sites on the first day, puts the falls in the middle, and visits the aquarium on the last day.
4 days, 3 nights
Choose the option without the falls if you want separate days for Mito's historic school and garden. To include Fukuroda Falls, visit those two together on the first day and give the falls a day. Both options stay three nights in Mito and visit the park and aquarium on separate days.
5 days, 4 nights
Give Kodokan and Kairakuen a relaxed day each, or visit both on the first day and add the free history and folk-life exhibits at Mito City Museum. For the museum option, confirm the exhibition period and opening calendar first. Both options give the park, falls, and aquarium a day each.
Hotel base
North Side of Mito Station · 水戸
Stay near Mito Station to visit Kodokan and Kairakuen and take day trips to the park, aquarium, and falls. From the north exit, walk to Kodokan or continue by bus to the garden. JR-East Hotel Mets Mito is an example hotel one minute on foot from the north exit. Check the location and conditions of the hotel you book.
Check Dates, Transport, and Admission Conditions
Choose Your Visits, Then Match the Transport
Choose attractions and their order first, then match outward and return trains, weekday or weekend/holiday bus timetables, and facility closures to your date. Facility hours and last admission are separate from travel times. Allow time to return to the station after sightseeing before choosing reserved limited express seats.

Choose a Hotel for Consecutive Nights near Mito Station
All itineraries stay near Mito Station and make round trips to the park, Oarai, and Fukuroda. Hotel Mets Mito is an example when choosing a hotel. If leaving luggage on the final day, check your chosen hotel's storage hours and fees and plan collection before the Tokyo-bound train.
Check Transfer Margins and Seasonal Costs
Check bus and train timetables together for return journeys from the park and aquarium. For Fukuroda Falls, official guidance gives about 40 minutes on foot from Fukuroda Station. Return by connecting the Takimoto bus with a Mito-bound train at Fukuroda; if delayed, check the next service. Costs are October reference prices for adult paper tickets and advance limited express purchases. The park's ¥800 fee applies October 9–November 3, 2026; Kairakuen main garden's ¥320 fee is outside the plum festival period. Hotels, meals, and extra activities are separate.

Ordinary Tickets or a Pass for These Itineraries?
Compare the Tokyo–Mito limited express and JR travel between Mito and Katsuta or Fukuroda within JR TOKYO Wide Pass coverage. The adult pass costs ¥16,000 and lasts three consecutive days. An original passport issued outside Japan is required; Temporary Visitor status is not a condition for this pass. Reserve standard-class seats. Kashima Rinkai Railway, buses to the park, garden, aquarium, and falls, facility admission, hotels, and meals are excluded.
The itinerary's ordinary tickets total ¥8,000 for the Tokyo–Mito limited express round trip, ¥400 for a Mito–Katsuta JR round trip for the park, and ¥2,080 for a Mito–Fukuroda JR round trip for the falls. Even all three total ¥10,480 for JR travel, below the ¥16,000 pass. We do not recommend the pass as a cheaper option for these journeys alone. This comparison uses October sample adult paper fares and advance standard-class reserved-seat tickets; it is not a new booking quote. Recalculate included journeys and dates if adding other JR trips.
Three- and four-night itineraries put Tokyo departure and return on days four or five, so one three-consecutive-day pass cannot cover the whole round trip. Do not simply subtract the original itinerary subtotal from the pass price. Compare ordinary-ticket journeys alongside separate local transport and admission costs.
