Ibaraki Attractions: Walks, Exhibits, and What to See
Choose Kairakuen for a walk among bamboo and large cedars, or Kodokan for historic school buildings. Walk through flower fields at Hitachi Seaside Park and see sharks and jellyfish at Oarai Aquarium. Kairakuen Garden
偕楽園
Walk at an easy pace through Kairakuen's bamboo grove and among its large cedars. If you are coming for plum blossoms, check the bloom updates for your visit date. Garden admission and admission inside Kobuntei are separate tickets.
- AdmissionStandard adult admission to the main garden is ¥320, or ¥500 during the plum festival. Kobuntei costs extra.
- HoursThe main garden opens 6:00 AM–7:00 PM from mid-February through September 30 and 7:00 AM–6:00 PM from October 1 through mid-February.
- Getting thereWalk from Mito Station's North Exit toward Kodokan to Stop 1 at the Kodokan bus stop. Take the Route 10 loop bus toward Kairakuen, get off at Kobuntei Omotemon Iriguchi, and walk about 5–8 minutes to the main garden's Omotemon gate. For the return, take the bus to Mito Station's North Exit from the same Stop 1. Distinguish this entrance from the East Gate and the Kobuntei building entrance.

Kodokan
弘道館
Kodokan was the Mito domain's school, where samurai studied academic subjects and martial arts. Explore the historic Seicho and Shizendo buildings to see the former school. There are changes in floor and ground level indoors and outside; check the official accessibility guidance first if you need mobility assistance.
- AdmissionAdults pay ¥420. Elementary and junior high school students and visitors age 70 and older pay ¥210.
- HoursKodokan opens 9:00 AM–5:00 PM February 20–September 30 and 9:00 AM–4:30 PM October 1–February 19. It closes December 29–31.
- Getting thereTurn right after leaving the ticket gates at Mito Station for the North Exit, then follow the deck and Ichozaka. The main gate is closed; enter the reception area through the side entrance on its right. Consult the official photo directions as well.

Hitachi Seaside Park
国営ひたち海浜公園
Choose Hitachi Seaside Park for a leisurely walk and photographs among flower fields. Explore the park around Miharashi no Oka's flowers and kochia, allowing time to walk from the entrance to your chosen area and rest along the way. Blooms and the kochia's red color depend on your date and the weather.
- AdmissionVisitors of high school age and older pay ¥450, or ¥800 including the seasonal surcharge on April 3–May 6 and October 9–November 3, 2026. Visitors of junior high school age and younger enter free. Rides and rental bicycles cost extra.
- HoursThe park opens 9:30 AM–5:00 PM March 1–July 17 and September–October. It stays open until 6:00 PM July 18–late August and closes at 4:30 PM November–late February. It normally closes Tuesdays, but the official October 2026 calendar lists daily opening. Check other months and years separately.
- Getting thereTake the bus from boarding point 2 at Katsuta Station's East Exit and get off at Seaside Park West Gate (海浜公園西口). The ride takes about 15 minutes.

Aqua World Oarai Aquarium
Aqua World Ibaraki Prefectural Oarai Aquariumアクアワールド茨城県大洗水族館
For a close look at aquatic life, explore Aqua World Oarai's shark and jellyfish exhibits and the large tank filled with swimming fish. Return to Mito after your daytime visit. Night events require a separate ticket; a daytime ticket does not let you stay for them.
- AdmissionAdmission is ¥2,300 for adults, ¥1,100 for elementary and junior high school students, and ¥400 for preschool children age 3 and older.
- HoursStandard hours are 9:00 AM–5:00 PM, with last admission at 4:00 PM. The aquarium closes for maintenance December 7–11, 2026. Date- and time-specific entry may apply on busy days.
- Getting thereFrom Oarai Station, take the Umimachi Line (うみまちライン) tourist route (観光ルート) and get off at Aqua World Oarai (アクアワールド・大洗). Walk about 1 minute to the aquarium. The ride takes about 20 minutes and costs ¥200 per adult per ride. Other loop routes do not stop at the aquarium.
- DiningThe food court is scheduled to close November 1, 2026, through mid-March 2027. Do not build your itinerary around a food-court lunch during that period.

Fukuroda Falls
袋田の滝
See Fukuroda Falls from different heights at the First and Second Observation Decks. This is a sightseeing visit with a round trip on the Suigun Line from Mito, rather than a hike to a mountain summit. Plan the walk from the station together with the return bus and train.
- AdmissionIndividual admission is ¥500 for adults and ¥300 for elementary and junior high school students. These viewing-facility fares have applied since July 1, 2025, and include the First and Second Observation Decks.
- HoursThe viewing facilities open 8:00 AM–6:00 PM May–October, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM in November, and 9:00 AM–5:00 PM December–April. They normally operate year-round; check for temporary changes on the day.
- Station, bus, and entranceThe official walking time from JR Fukuroda Station is about 40 minutes. By bus, get off at Takimoto and walk about 10 minutes. These itineraries walk to the falls and return on the ¥260 bus to Fukuroda Station from Takimoto Stop 1. Enter through the viewing tunnel and take the elevator inside to the Second Observation Deck.
- Dates and connectionsThe one-way Mito–Fukuroda JR fare of ¥1,040 is a reference from an Eki-net search on 2026-10-08. Connect the return bus with a Mito-bound train using your actual date's timetables; check the next service if delayed. Return to Mito and stay overnight on the falls day.

Mito City Museum
水戸市立博物館
Choose the city museum if you want to learn about Mito's urban history and everyday tools alongside the historic school buildings. Four-night Option B visits Kodokan and Kairakuen together on the first day and the museum on the second. Check the exhibits and exhibition dates for your visit.
- AdmissionPermanent-gallery and planned exhibitions are free; special exhibitions charge separately. The four-night Option B subtotal includes only the permanent galleries and excludes special exhibitions.
- HoursThe museum opens 9:30 AM–4:45 PM, with entry until 4:15 PM. Check the current calendar for closures on Mondays, public holidays, around New Year, during exhibition changes, and other dates.
- Getting thereThe museum is at 3-3-20 Omachi, Mito, in the same building as the central library. Four-night Option B walks to and from Mito Station's North Exit using the city map and signs. Distinguish the library reception from the museum entrance.

Frequently asked questions
Is Hitachi Seaside Park always ¥450?
Adult admission is ¥800 during the designated seasonal-fare periods in 2026. Rides and rental bicycles cost extra.
Can I use a daytime ticket for Oarai Aquarium's night events?
Leave after daytime visiting hours and enter again with a separate night-event ticket. A daytime ticket does not let you stay through the evening.
Is Fukuroda Falls still ¥300 for adults?
No. Since July 1, 2025, individual adult admission has been ¥500, including the First and Second Observation Decks.
