Kodokan was the Mito domain's school, teaching samurai both academic subjects and martial arts. The surviving Seicho and Shizendo buildings offer a look at the former school. Visit if you want to explore historic buildings in Mito.

Admission

Individual admission is ¥420 for adults and ¥210 for elementary and junior high school students and visitors age 70 and older. Children younger than elementary school age enter free. For groups of 20 or more, adults pay ¥320 and elementary and junior high school students pay ¥160. Follow the official guide for other group fares and exemptions.

Opening hours

Kodokan opens 9:00 AM–5:00 PM February 20–September 30 and 9:00 AM–4:30 PM October 1–February 19. It closes December 29–31. Hours may change during the plum festival.

How to get to Kodokan · 弘道館

Turn right after leaving Mito Station's ticket gates for the North Exit. Follow the deck and Ichozaka to Kodokan. The main gate is closed; enter through the side entrance on its right to find reception. The official route photographs help identify the entrance.

Can I visit Kodokan and Kairakuen on the same day?

Yes. After Kodokan, travel to Kairakuen for the garden. Take the loop bus toward Kairakuen from the Kodokan stop. If you also want to enter Kobuntei, check its separate admission and hours.
