Mie travel guide: choosing an Ise, Toba or Iga base

Look near Iseshi Station for an Ise Jingu trip, or Toba Station for the aquarium and Pearl Island. If adding the ninja museum, check the hotel-change journey from Iga’s Uenoshi to Ise separately.

Shrines, the sea or ninja exhibitions first?

For shrine visits, compare Geku and Naiku at Ise Jingu. For marine life, choose Toba Aquarium; for pearls and ama diver demonstrations, Mikimoto Pearl Island. Consider Futami for a coastal walk, or a separate Iga day for the ninja house and historical displays.

Itineraries by trip length

Stay in Ise and take separate day trips to add an aquarium or coastal walk to the shrines. To add the ninja museum, choose an itinerary staying one night in Uenoshi before moving to Ise. For two days, compare Ise shrine visits with Toba’s aquarium and Pearl Island. Add final-day visits only when time remains to return to the station before your booked departure.

2 days / 1 night

Choose Ise’s Geku and Naiku for a short shrine trip, or Toba for the aquarium and Pearl Island on separate days. These options start and finish in different areas.

3 days / 2 nights

Compare two nights in Ise with a Toba Aquarium day trip against a ninja museum visit in Iga before changing hotels to Ise. The Iga-start itinerary requires a rail transfer at Iga-Kambe.

4 days / 3 nights

Compare staying in Ise and adding the Futami coast with starting in Iga and visiting Geku and Naiku on different days. The Ise-based option visits Futami on departure day, so change the order or trip length for an early departure.

5 days / 4 nights

Stay four nights in Ise to separate Futami from departure day, or stay one night in Uenoshi, then two in Ise and one in Toba. Pearl Island is outside the core itinerary of the option staying in Toba.

Choose a neighbourhood around shrine approaches or the coast

Geku and the Naiku entrance are in different neighbourhoods

Walk from Iseshi Station to Geku, but take a bus to Naiku. After Geku, return to the station area for a meal; on a Naiku day, consider eating in Oharaimachi. Some shops near Naiku close early, so compare dinner options around Iseshi and Ujiyamada stations.

Choose Toba or Iga accommodation around the next day’s visit

In Toba, compare station-area hotels if visiting the aquarium and Pearl Island on different days. In Iga, one itinerary visits the ninja museum, stays near Uenoshi Station and moves to Ise next. Check coastal-hotel shuttles and station-to-hotel travel with your chosen property.

Reaching Ise from Nagoya, Osaka or the airport

Look for trains to Iseshi Station to start at Geku. Walk to Geku after arrival and take a bus for Naiku. If staying in Toba, set Toba as your train destination. Enter your starting station and date to check transfers and fares.

From Nagoya

Search Kintetsu Nagoya → Iseshi or compare a route from JR Nagoya. For Geku first, leave at Iseshi and follow the shrine approach from the JR-side exit. A Kintetsu limited express requires a limited express ticket as well as the base fare.

How should I compare itinerary costs and transport passes?

Separate admission from travel costs

Ordinary Geku and Naiku visits are free. Toba Aquarium, Pearl Island and the ninja museum charge admission; the ninja show is additional. Three-day Option A’s JPY 4,620 includes the aquarium, ordinary Iseshi ↔ Toba trains and return Naiku bus fares. Other options may exclude intercity rail travel, so read inclusions and exclusions first.

Distinguish Kintetsu and JR pass routes

The five-day Kintetsu Rail Pass covers all Kintetsu lines and Iga Railway for five consecutive days; limited express tickets are additional. It differs from the JR Sangu Line and Ise Railway routes in the Ise–Kumano–Wakayama pass. Ise Railway and Iga Railway are different operators. Decide your actual routes and dates before comparing ordinary tickets.
