Mie travel guide: choose a base in Ise, Toba or Iga

Look near Iseshi Station for Ise Jingu, or near Toba Station for the aquarium and Pearl Island. If adding the ninja museum, check the separate accommodation move from Uenoshi in Iga to Ise.

What should you see first: shrines, the sea or ninja exhibitions?

For worship, compare Ise Jingu’s Outer and Inner Shrines. Choose Toba Aquarium for marine life, Mikimoto Pearl Island for pearls and ama demonstrations, or Futami for a coastal walk. Give Iga a separate day for the ninja house and exhibitions.

Itineraries by trip length

Stay in Ise and take separate day trips to add the aquarium or coast to shrine visits. For the ninja museum too, choose one night in Uenoshi before moving to Ise. For two days, compare Ise worship with Toba’s aquarium and Pearl Island. On the final day, add only visits that leave time to return to the station and board your booked departure.

1 night, 2 days

Choose Ise for short visits to the Outer and Inner Shrines, or Toba to give the aquarium and Pearl Island separate days. These courses start and finish in different areas.

2 nights, 3 days

Compare two nights in Ise with an aquarium day trip against a start at Iga’s ninja museum followed by a move to Ise. The Iga course requires a rail change at Iga-Kambe.

3 nights, 4 days

Compare a stay in Ise with an added Futami visit against a start in Iga with shrine visits on separate days. The Ise-based course visits Futami on the final day, so change the order or trip length for an early departure.

4 nights, 5 days

Stay four nights in Ise with separate Futami and departure days, or move between one night in Uenoshi, two in Ise and one in Toba. The Toba overnight course does not include Pearl Island in its basic itinerary.

Choose neighbourhoods around shrine approaches and the coast

The Outer Shrine and Inner Shrine areas are separate

Walk from Iseshi Station to the Outer Shrine, but take a bus to the Inner Shrine. After the Outer Shrine, return towards the station for a meal. On the Inner Shrine day, consider Oharaimachi. Some shops there close early, so compare Iseshi and Ujiyamada station areas for dinner too.

Choose Toba and Iga accommodation around the next day’s visit

Look near Toba Station to give the aquarium and Pearl Island separate days. The Iga course visits the ninja museum, stays near Uenoshi for a night and then moves to Ise. Check coastal-property shuttles and station access with your chosen accommodation.

Reach Ise from Nagoya, Osaka or the airport

Find a train to Iseshi Station to start with the Outer Shrine. Walk to it after arrival and take a bus for the Inner Shrine. If staying in Toba, select Toba as your arrival station. Enter your starting station and date to check transfers and fares.

Starting from Nagoya

Search from Kintetsu Nagoya towards Iseshi, or compare a route from JR Nagoya. For the Outer Shrine first, alight at Iseshi and follow the approach from the JR-side exit. A Kintetsu limited express requires a supplement ticket in addition to the base fare.

How should you compare course costs and transport passes?

Separate admission from transport costs

Ordinary worship at both shrines is free. Toba Aquarium, Pearl Island and the ninja museum charge admission; the ninja show costs extra. Three-day Route A’s JPY 4,620 adds the aquarium, ordinary Iseshi–Toba return trains and return buses to the Inner Shrine. Other courses may exclude intercity rail fares, so read inclusions and exclusions first.

Distinguish Kintetsu and JR pass coverage

The Kintetsu Rail Pass five-day ticket covers all Kintetsu lines and Iga Railway for five consecutive days; limited-express supplements cost extra. This differs from JR Sangu Line and Ise Railway coverage under the Ise–Kumano–Wakayama ticket. Ise Railway and Iga Railway are separate companies. Establish your actual lines and dates before comparing ordinary tickets.

Frequently asked questions

Must I change accommodation to visit Ise Jingu and Toba Aquarium?

You can stay near Iseshi Station and make a Kintetsu return trip to the aquarium. Staying near Toba Station instead lets you give the aquarium and Pearl Island separate days. Decide your actual return trains and final departure station before choosing whether to move accommodation.
