JAL Canada–Japan: documents and help when plans change

For a JAL-operated flight, use JAL’s disruption search to obtain an available delay, cancellation or diversion certificate. For a refund, start with the original ticket seller. If a bag is missing, report it to the arrival-airport staff before leaving.

Reviewed October 2, 2026. This guide covers Canada–Japan travel, not domestic Japan flights. JL017/JL018: Vancouver–Narita in both directions. No live status or personal claim processing is provided here.

Where to find a JAL disruption certificate

Open JAL’s certificate instructions, follow its Flight Delay / Cancellation / Diversion Information search and select your flight number. JAL states a search window starting three days before the boarding date and ending one year after it. A future date in that window does not guarantee that a certificate exists.

The service covers JAL international flights. A codeshare operated by another airline is excluded; ask the operating airline. Keep the local departure date, flight number and itinerary together. A certificate is evidence of the event, not approval of compensation or an insurance claim.

Change the booking—or ask for a refund?

Check the alternatives in your booking after a cancellation or schedule change. JAL’s irregular-operation instructions distinguish these procedures from a voluntary cancellation. Web changes depend on ticket eligibility; request a refund through the original point of purchase. For an agency-issued ticket, contact that agency rather than assuming JAL’s website can refund it.

Before paying for a replacement flight, ask what JAL can arrange and what expenses it will authorize. Keep the original and revised itinerary, written disruption reason, airline messages and itemized receipts. Check your insurer’s own policy and claim requirements separately; no insurer-specific entitlement has been verified.

Missing or damaged baggage

JAL’s baggage-problem instructions say to report damage immediately, before leaving the airport; damage found later must be reported to the arrival airport within seven days of receipt. Its international damage inquiry form applies when the final arrival flight was JAL-operated; submitting it is not a promise of compensation.

If your bag is missing, report it promptly to the arrival-airport staff and keep the file reference. JAL’s baggage tracer and airport contacts distinguish that reference from the bag-tag number. If another airline flew your final connection, contact that last airline.

Vancouver arrival
Ask the arrival-airport JAL staff for the designated follow-up number when reporting the problem; a dedicated YVR baggage number was not verified.

Report and reimbursement deadlines are different. Read the current international carriage terms and Canada-specific provisions before making a formal claim; this guide does not determine legal eligibility.

Canada bookings: use the correct hours

JAL’s official U.S./Canada contact listing gives 1-800-525-3663 for reservations and information, in Japanese or English, daily 05:00–16:00 U.S. Pacific Time. From outside the U.S./Canada, it lists +1-310-607-4160; international charges apply.

These are not 24-hour reservation hours. Do not automatically equate U.S. Pacific Time with Vancouver time after the November 2026 clock change: B.C. has adopted permanent UTC−7. JAL’s regional help page lists chat separately; feedback forms are not reservation-change channels.

Canadian passenger rights

The Canadian Air Passenger Protection Regulations distinguish disruption causes and obligations. A cancellation alone does not establish a compensation amount. Before escalating an unresolved complaint to the Canadian Transportation Agency, write to the airline and allow 30 days for its response. No claim was submitted or assessed in this review.

Report a correction without sending personal travel or insurance documents.

English-speaking reservations in Japan

JAL’s Japan international contact page lists 0570-025-121 for domestic calls in Japan, and +81-3-6733-3062 for international calls or IP phones. Call charges apply. Select option 1 for international reservations and information; the listed hours are 08:00–19:00 daily in Japan.

The same page lists the automated SKY NAVI flight-information service as 24 hours. That is not a 24-hour human reservation desk. Keep your booking reference private and provide it only through JAL’s official agent channel.
