Ehime: how should you divide Matsuyama, Uchiko and Ozu?
Stay near Okaido for castle visits and meals in central Matsuyama, or near Dogo Onsen if you want to return to your accommodation after a bath. With one or two nights, focus on Matsuyama. With three or four nights, take JR trains to Uchiko’s historic streets and Ozu. Choose between separate day trips from the same base and one or two nights in Ozu to explore its castle and riverside.
Castle and hot springs or historic-town walks?
Explore Matsuyama Castle’s historic keep and hilltop city views, then walk Dogo’s shopping area after bathing. Choose Uchiko for historic-street walks or Ozu for a wooden keep and riverside. Costs vary with keep visits, ropeway rides and hot spring relaxation rooms. Uchiko-za’s main building is closed for construction and its interior is excluded.
Itineraries by trip length
Visit Matsuyama’s castle and hot springs around your accommodation location, taking JR on Uchiko and Ozu days. Choose separate day trips from one base or move to Ozu to walk its streets and visit the castle on different days. Daily steps distinguish city tram travel from reaching JR Matsuyama Station.
2 days, 1 night
Choose Okaido for the keep and hot springs, or Dogo for bathing and honmaru views. Focus on one visit if you arrive late or leave the following morning.
3 days, 2 nights
Compare separate castle and bathing days with a day in Uchiko’s historic streets. Uchiko requires JR rather than a city tram, plus time to walk between the station and streets.
4 days, 3 nights
Choose separate Uchiko and Ozu day trips while staying in Matsuyama, or travel via Uchiko for one night in Ozu. Changing accommodation reduces returns to Matsuyama but requires sightseeing on the moving day to fit the next train.
5 days, 4 nights
Visit the castle, hot springs and both towns from one base, or spend two nights in Ozu to separate street walks and castle sightseeing. Before moving via Uchiko, check whether you can walk with light luggage; otherwise consider the direct alternative.
Stay below the castle or near the hot springs?
Okaido
Stay near Okaido to walk to the Matsuyama Castle ropeway and eat in the city centre. Take a tram towards Dogo Onsen on your bathing day.

Look near Dogo Onsen Station if you want a short trip back to your accommodation after bathing. You’ll need a separate journey to JR Matsuyama Station when leaving for Uchiko, Ozu or another city.

One or two nights in Ozu
Stay in Ozu to explore the historic town at a slower pace without returning to Matsuyama each day. If flying out of Matsuyama Airport, check trains from Iyo-Ozu Station together with airport buses from outside JR Matsuyama Station.

Luggage storage when changing accommodation
If leaving luggage at accommodation, plan storage hours together with the journey back to collect it. General luggage storage in Uchiko is currently unconfirmed. Compare walking Uchiko with light luggage and going directly to Iyo-Ozu with large luggage.
Use the latest timetable on your airport departure day
Current airport bus route and fare checks use Iyotetsu’s guidance for 1–24 October 2026. Check new timetables and fares after that period. Airport stops outside Dogo Onsen Station, at Okaido and outside JR Matsuyama Station are separate; some airport departures skip Dogo or Okaido. Move bathing or castle visits to an earlier day, or omit them, for a final-morning departure. Allow time for train and bus waits and airport procedures. Airport bus costs are excluded from partial sightseeing totals.

Divide your time between Matsuyama, Uchiko and Ozu
In the city, start with the castle or hot springs closest to your accommodation. Set aside separate JR days for historic towns. Stay in Matsuyama and visit each town for a day, or include one Ozu night in a four-day trip and two Ozu nights in a five-day trip.
Okaido and Matsuyama Castle
Choose Okaido for keep visits and dinner in the city. Walk about 5 minutes from the tram stop to the Shinonomeguchi lower ropeway station. After reaching the upper station, you still need to walk to the grounds and keep ticket office. Keep stairs are steep. Decide between the honmaru views and the paid keep interior first.

Dogo Onsen Station and shopping area
Stay near Dogo Onsen Station for a short return to your accommodation after bathing. Walk along Haikara-dori to Honkan and eat in the shopping area before or after your bath. Honkan is a public bathhouse. Bath-only and relaxation-room options differ in price and time limit.

JR Matsuyama Station and trains beyond the city
Use JR Matsuyama Station for Uchiko and Ozu. It differs from Matsuyama-shi Station and requires a separate city tram trip from Okaido or Dogo. Add time to reach the JR gates from your accommodation by tram rather than planning around train travel alone.
Uchiko Station and historic streets
Take a JR train via Uchiko for old buildings and lanes. The historic area’s southern entrance is roughly 1 km or a 15-minute walk from the station. Trains via Iyo-Nagahama skip Uchiko. Uchiko-za’s main building is closed for repairs, so this plan focuses on street walking and its exterior. Check individual fees and closures for houses or museums you want to enter.

Ozu’s historic streets, riverside and castle
Choose two nights in Ozu to separate the castle visit from historic-street and riverside walks. The one-night option moves via Uchiko and visits the castle the next day. The station-to-castle walk takes about 30 minutes; allow walking time before and after visiting. Ticket sales end at 16:30. Check the Matsuyama return train for a day trip, or the next day’s departure if staying in Ozu.

Plan city trams and JR separately
Distinguish JR Matsuyama from Matsuyama-shi Station. Check origin, destination and tram number, adding time to transfer from city transport to JR. Confirm walking start and end points, then adjust directions to your accommodation address and local access notices. Map estimates exclude waits and sightseeing.

Choose how you want your sea bream rice prepared
Look for meals in Okaido on your castle day and Dogo’s shopping area on your bathing day. Leave time for town lunches on Uchiko and Ozu days. Check specific menus and prices before booking.
Rice cooked with sea bream
Matsuyama City’s official tourism guide describes sea bream and kombu placed over rice and cooked together. Look for this version if you want cooked fish with rice. The northern Hojo style and individual restaurants’ ingredients may differ; read menu descriptions and view photos together.
The version with sea bream sashimi
Matsuyama City’s tourism guide says the sashimi version is prevalent in the south. Check the preparation on the menu before ordering if you want sea bream sashimi. Compare both versions, then choose a restaurant in the neighbourhood where you’ll eat that day.
Costs for JR beyond the city and city trams
Route subtotals include only the listed attractions, JR non-reserved limited expresses and city trams. Budget separately for excluded costs such as airport buses, meals, accommodation and house exhibitions.
Choose tram 3 or 5 by destination
From Okaido, take tram 3 towards Dogo Onsen for the hot springs or tram 5 towards JR Matsuyama Station for JR. Tram 3’s Matsuyama-shi destination is not the JR station. The checked adult city tram fare is ¥250 cash or ¥230 with a nationwide transit IC card per ride. Route subtotals show cash and IC alternatives.
