Gunma: cultural heritage or a hot spring break?

Choose Takasaki for a large Kannon statue, historic silk factory, and history and art exhibits. Choose Kusatsu for yumomi performances and a hot spring break. Takasaki itineraries start with ordinary trains from Tokyo Station; Kusatsu itineraries start with direct buses from Busta Shinjuku. Explore each base separately by trip length.

Cultural heritage, making something or hot springs?

Choose Tomioka Silk Mill for historic industrial buildings and exhibits, or Shorinzan daruma painting for a hands-on activity. Separate art and history visits across days from a Takasaki base. For bathing and rest, choose Kusatsu and distinguish performances from the three bathing facilities. There are stairs inside the statue and on the way to the daruma venue, so check access.

Day-by-day itineraries

Choose Takasaki for historic factory visits, history and art exhibits, and daruma painting. Choose Kusatsu for yumomi performances and bathing. The basic itineraries do not travel between both bases. Match your stay length to your chosen facilities and departing train or direct bus.

2 days, 1 night

Give the Byakue Dai-Kannon and Tomioka Silk Mill a day each from Takasaki, or enjoy a performance and one outdoor bath in Kusatsu. Sightseeing must fit after arrival on day one and before your day-two return, so match return trains or direct buses before adding facilities.

3 days, 2 nights

The Takasaki culture itinerary gives the history and modern art museums a day each. The Kusatsu itinerary adds a day at Gozanoyu's indoor bath. Compare the two exhibition facilities' closing days or each bath's amenities when choosing.

4 days, 3 nights

In Takasaki, add a daruma painting day between exhibits. In Kusatsu, enjoy the three baths on different days. Check activity reservations, stairs and three-bath ticket coverage separately.

5 days, 4 nights

Stay in Takasaki to add the city art museum and former Inoue residence, or in Kusatsu to add animal observation at Nettaiken between baths. Choose a return service you can catch after your last-day visit or bath.

Where should you stay?

Takasaki · 高崎

Base yourself near Takasaki Station to give Kannonyama, Tomioka and Gunma-no-Mori's cultural facilities a day each. One accommodation example, Hotel Metropolitan Takasaki, connects to the station and lists 15:00 check-in, 11:00 check-out and luggage storage before and after your stay. Check storage conditions separately at your booked accommodation.

Kusatsu · 草津

Look around Yubatake for accommodation if enjoying yumomi performances and baths on separate days. Take breaks at your accommodation between square walks, performances and meals. Yubatake Souan, about a five-minute walk from the bus terminal, is one accommodation example. Check meal inclusions and conditions for your chosen stay.

What to choose before travelling

Choose separately between Takasaki culture and Kusatsu hot springs

In Takasaki, see the Byakue Dai-Kannon and exhibits, setting aside another day for Tomioka Silk Mill by Joshin Railway. In Kusatsu, choose Yubatake walks, yumomi performances or rest at bathing facilities. For a short trip, stay in the area with the facilities you want rather than travelling between both.

Match your train departure station and return bus first

For Takasaki museums and galleries, take an ordinary train from Tokyo Station to Takasaki, then transfer to a city bus. For Kusatsu, take a direct bus from Busta Shinjuku. Check return services, seats and fares for your date. Winter outdoor baths open at 09:00; if that does not fit a 10:00 accommodation check-out, bathe the previous day. To move your accommodation from Kusatsu to Ikaho, check actual bus–JR–bus connections and accommodation arrival separately. The current itineraries do not travel between these two hot spring towns.

Rail passes and the three-bath ticket cover different things

The JR TOKYO Wide Pass is a rail ticket for three consecutive days. It includes Joshin Railway, but does not bundle facility visits, activities and Gururin buses. Do not apply one pass to a full trip arriving from Tokyo on day one and returning on day five. Kusatsu's JPY 2,100 three-bath ticket covers one visit to each bath, with no expiry date. Compare it with JPY 2,900 in combined individual admission when using all three. Itinerary budgets use individual tickets; their totals do not already subtract the discount.

Plan meals around bathing and use cameras for exterior views

On Takasaki sightseeing days, choose meals between the station and your destination. Yubatake Souan, an accommodation example, does not provide dinner; check restaurants' opening days and last orders around Yubatake. Gozanoyu has no restaurant inside, so plan meals around Yubatake separately. The camera towards Yutaki shows one direction around the square. It does not show every street, accommodation or bath interior; check the image time alongside actual facility operating guidance.

Explore Takasaki pasta and Kusatsu onsen manju

Choose Gunma flour-based dishes or local snacks where you will be that day. Menus, prices and opening days vary by restaurant.

Takasaki pasta

Official tourism guidance introduces Takasaki as a city with many pasta restaurants. Compare lunch or dinner options on your Takasaki day, with each restaurant's own sauces, such as thick meat sauce or seafood sauce. Check the location and route back to the station.

How should I compare a rail pass and the three-bath ticket?

Each itinerary is a reference budget adding checked transport and admission with individual tickets. With a rail pass or three-bath ticket, replace covered rail fares or bath admission with the package price. Do not add daruma activity and locker fees already included in the total again. Calculate accommodation, meals, towels and extra activities separately.
