Five days in Gunma: a historic residence or a tropical dome walk?

For a longer Takasaki stay, see the statue, daruma painting, history and modern art exhibits, then the city art museum and former Inoue residence on your last day. Residence interior hours are 10:00–11:00 and 14:00–16:00; choose a Tokyo train you can catch afterwards. The Kusatsu option puts an animal observation day at Nettaiken between the performance and three baths, returning to Shinjuku on the last day.

A Tomioka day trip while staying in Takasaki?

For industrial heritage, compare replacing one exhibition day in the Takasaki culture itinerary with Tomioka Silk Mill. This changes one day's destination rather than adding every attraction to the original itinerary.

Return by Joshin Railway and walk to the mill

From Takasaki Station west side, take a Joshin Railway local train towards Shimonita to Joshu-Tomioka. Walk about 15 minutes to the mill, then return to the same station for a Takasaki train after your visit and lunch. The mill opens 09:00–17:00, with last entry at 16:30, and closes 29–31 December. Choose outward and return services together for your date.

Silk mill accessOfficial visitor information

Ordinary tickets versus the JR TOKYO Wide Pass

JPY 1,620 adult return Joshin Railway tickets plus JPY 1,000 mill admission total JPY 2,620, excluding meals and the separate JPY 200 guide. The JR TOKYO Wide Pass covers Joshin Railway, but mill admission costs extra. At JPY 16,000 per adult for three consecutive days, it is not a cheaper recommendation for this round trip alone. If replacing an exhibition day, adjust the removed exhibition and bus items rather than keeping the original total.

Moving from Takasaki to Kusatsu for one night?

To combine culture and hot springs, compare replacing one night of your Takasaki stay with Kusatsu. This does not add hot springs to the existing four-night itinerary. Adjust the removed exhibition day together with transport and accommodation costs.

Separate your travel day to the hot springs from your return to Takasaki

From Takasaki, choose a JR Agatsuma Line service towards Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi, then transfer there to a JR bus for Kusatsu Onsen. On the travel day, walk from the bus terminal to Yubatake and explore the hot spring town rather than adding exhibits. The following day, take a bus from the terminal to Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi and JR trains back to Takasaki. Check operating days and connections in both directions. JR buses cannot be reserved and may be full, so do not rely solely on the last bus.

Separate rail, bus and accommodation costs, and choose your baths

No full trip total is set for this alternative. Add JR return tickets, JR return bus fares, one Kusatsu night, meals and your chosen performances and baths separately. Distinguish JR segments within the JR TOKYO Wide Pass's three consecutive days from JR buses, which are excluded. If using all three baths, compare the JPY 2,100 package with JPY 2,900 combined individual admission. For one bath, choose individual admission first and budget separately for performances, towels and lockers. Remove the exhibition and bus items for the day replaced in the four-night Takasaki itinerary. Do not use the four-night Kusatsu itinerary's direct Shinjuku bus cost unchanged for this journey.

Frequently asked questions

Can I visit the former Inoue residence interior whenever the museum opens?

Interior access is split between 10:00–11:00 and 14:00–16:00. These differ from Takasaki City Museum of Art's exhibit hours, so match one period for the house interior. Five-day itinerary A visits the interior in the afternoon before returning by train from Takasaki Station. The 10 October–13 December 2026 Human Figure exhibition costs JPY 300 standard admission, including the residence; recheck prices and closing days for other exhibition periods.

Takasaki City Museum of Art Human Figure exhibition and admission

Can one JR TOKYO Wide Pass cover five days in Takasaki?

The pass is valid for three consecutive days from your chosen start date. Starting on day one does not cover your return to Tokyo on day five. Official covered lines include JR East and Joshin Railway, but Gururin buses, facility admission and daruma painting cost extra. Foreign nationals with non-Japanese passports are eligible; this pass does not require Temporary Visitor status. At JPY 16,000 per adult, it is not a cheaper recommendation for this itinerary's JPY 4,180 ordinary Tokyo–Takasaki return trains without extra travel. If adding Shinkansen or other journeys, compare your actual routes and dates again.

JR TOKYO Wide Pass lines, price and three consecutive daysJR pass purchase, eligibility, passport and Temporary Visitor exceptionJR 2026 revised fare guidance

When should I start the pass for one night in Kusatsu during five days in Tokyo?

Choose three consecutive days that cover both your outward trip to Kusatsu and return to Tokyo the next day. Starting on day one does not cover a day-five rail return. Compare other rail journeys alongside Kusatsu travel before choosing ordinary tickets or a pass. JR buses, local accommodation, meals and bathing admission cost extra with either option.
