Hokkaido: which city should you stay in?
Choose Sapporo as your base for Otaru Canal walks and a confectionery factory visit, or Hakodate for harbour scenery and night views. Sapporo and Otaru connect with New Chitose Airport; Hakodate connects with Hakodate Airport. To visit both cities, compare a five-day trip with two nights in Sapporo, two in Hakodate and a flight out of Hakodate Airport.
Walks, views or exhibitions: what appeals to you?
Choose Odori Park for central Sapporo walks or Otaru Canal for the waterfront. For views, compare Sapporo TV Tower with Hakodate’s Goryokaku Tower. See confectionery exhibitions at Shiroi Koibito Park or ship exhibits at Mashumaru. For Hakodate’s night view, plan a stay there alongside the ropeway’s operating dates.
Choose an itinerary
Compare a Sapporo-based itinerary for Otaru Canal and the confectionery factory, or a Hakodate stay for harbour scenery and night views. To visit both, there is a five-day itinerary changing hotels from Sapporo to Hakodate. Check flight times before assuming you can sightsee on arrival or departure day. Allow for airport-to-hotel travel on day 1 and airport travel, check-in and departure procedures on the final day.
2 days, 1 night
Choose one city: A for central Sapporo and views, or B for Hakodate’s night view and Goryokaku. Stay one night in the city matching your airport.
3 days, 2 nights
For a trip centred on canal walks, stay two nights in Sapporo and spend the middle day in Otaru. For Hakodate’s night view and star-shaped fort, stay two nights in Hakodate and visit them on separate days. Add the final-day harbour walk only if airport travel time allows.
4 days, 3 nights
Choose A for three nights in Sapporo with an Otaru day trip, or B for the botanical garden and exhibitions. Both visit Shiroi Koibito Park; B requires an outdoor garden opening day.
5 days, 4 nights
Choose A for one night in Otaru and three in Sapporo if you want an evening by the canal, or B for two nights each in Sapporo and Hakodate for the night view. A follows botanical garden opening dates; B flies out of Hakodate Airport.
Where to stay
Near Sapporo Station
Stay near Sapporo Station if you’ll use JR for the airport and Otaru. This reduces the need for a subway journey before catching your train. Routes from hotels to the gates differ on the north and south sides; look at the walk before booking.

Near Susukino
Consider Susukino · すすきの for a short return to your hotel after dinner. Distances to restaurants and the subway vary by hotel. If planning a late meal, check the walking route to your booked accommodation.
Near Otaru Station
Stay a night near Otaru Station if you’d like an evening canal walk without rushing for a train to Sapporo. Move your base to Sapporo the next day for city sightseeing. Plan dinner around your chosen restaurant’s opening hours.
Near Hakodate Station or Jujigai
Hakodate Station is a useful base for airport buses and trams, with separate days for the harbour and Goryokaku. Consider Jujigai · 十字街 if you’d like more time around the warehouses and ropeway, but note the uphill walk to the ropeway’s lower station.

Choose your sights, then plan separate days
Hokkaido · 北海道. Start with what appeals to you: central Sapporo walks, Otaru Canal or Hakodate views. Visit Miyanosawa and Otaru on different days, and compare Hakodate as a trip where you change overnight bases.
Central Sapporo: Clock Tower, Odori Park and TV Tower
After an Odori Park walk, visit the TV Tower in the evening for Sapporo’s night view. The Clock Tower is compact, and exterior photographs are an option. For old photographs and clock-mechanism exhibits, arrive before standard last admission at 17:00. Check official notices for evening openings. If arriving late, divide visits between the first and final days.

Near Sapporo Station: botanical garden walks
Visit Hokkaido University Botanical Gardens for flowers and trees near Sapporo Station from spring to autumn. It offers a different setting from city streets or the university campus. The main gate is about 10 minutes’ walk from JR Sapporo Station’s south exit; the garden is a separate paid facility from the campus. The outdoor garden opens 29 April–3 November, and the glasshouse is currently closed to the public, so it is not a winter alternative.
Miyanosawa: confectionery exhibitions and gardens
If you’ve seen Shiroi Koibito sweets while travelling in Japan, explore how they’re made at the official park in Sapporo. Factory tours and exhibitions are in the paid area; gardens and shopping need no ticket. Take the Tozai Line from Odori towards Miyanosawa, get off at the terminus and walk about 7 minutes. Confectionery-making activities cost extra, with registration and advance booking differing by activity.

Otaru: canal day trip or overnight stay?
Photograph the old warehouses beside Otaru Canal by day, or see gas lamps and warehouse lights reflected in the water in the evening. The canal is about 10 minutes’ walk from Otaru Station. Check your return train before deciding whether to leave after the daytime views or stay until evening. Choose an overnight stay for dinner without rushing. A paid canal cruise is excluded from this itinerary.

Hakodate: fort views, harbour and night scenery
Choose Goryokaku Tower for the star-shaped fort from above, or Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse for harbour walks and shopping. The ropeway’s lower station is uphill, away from the waterfront warehouses. Three-day B stays within Hakodate and visits Goryokaku and the night view on separate days. Skip the summit during ropeway suspension from 20 October to 8 November 2026.

More transport, food and cameras
Choose meals between the day’s sights and your hotel rather than travelling to another city just to eat. Meals are excluded from itinerary subtotals. Menus, prices and last orders vary by restaurant.
Sapporo: choose the food and hotel neighbourhood together
Start with a dish you’d like: ramen, soup curry or jingisukan. The Sapporo Tourism Association’s listings let you browse by food and areas around Sapporo Station, Odori and Susukino. For dinner after the TV Tower, also check the subway direction back to your hotel.

Otaru: lunch or dinner after the canal walk
Lunch near the canal or station followed by a return to Sapporo differs from staying overnight in Otaru into the evening. For a day trip, choose restaurant hours and return trains together. The canal path and nearby shops do not share opening hours.

Hakodate: station-area or harbour meals
Consider Donburi Yokocho at Hakodate Morning Market for seafood rice bowls or ramen near the station. Hakodate City’s tourism guide lists restaurants in the market close to JR. On a warehouse day, choose a harbour meal separately and time it so you don’t miss your return tram or airport bus.

Should I choose a JR pass or ordinary tickets?
JR costs depend on whether you’ll travel only to the airport and Otaru or continue to Hakodate. Add any extra JR sections to the ordinary-ticket totals below, then compare pass prices.
The Hokkaido Rail Pass and two regional passes are available to travellers with a valid passport issued outside Japan. The original passport is required when exchanging or purchasing; a residence card or passport copy cannot replace it.
For an Otaru day trip from your Sapporo hotel
Four-day A combines return airport JR fares of JPY 2,460 and return Otaru fares of JPY 1,600, totalling JPY 4,060. Start with this ordinary-ticket cost if there are no extra JR journeys. A Sapporo subway day pass does not cover JR to the airport or Otaru.

For travel from Sapporo to Hakodate
Five-day B has a JR subtotal of JPY 12,600, below the advance-purchase JPY 22,000 five-day Hokkaido Rail Pass. Secure a reserved Hokuto seat before boarding. The pass excludes the subway, trams, Hokkaido Shinkansen and Donan Isaribi Railway. The Sapporo–Noboribetsu and Sapporo–Furano regional passes are valid for four consecutive days; they do not cover Hakodate travel or all five trip days in the same way.

Consider the season and your companions’ needs
The outdoor botanical garden closes in winter, and maintenance or weather can suspend the ropeway. With parents who find long walks difficult or children needing a stroller, also consider the uphill walk to the lower station and Mashumaru’s stairs. Skip unsuitable visits and choose another itinerary of the same length.
If you want the botanical garden in winter
The outdoor garden closes in winter and the glasshouse is currently closed to the public. For four days, choose Otaru Canal and Shiroi Koibito Park instead. The one-night Otaru, three-night Sapporo itinerary has no winter replacement for its day 3 garden visit. Allow extra walking and return time on snowy or icy paths.
If the ropeway is suspended
During maintenance from 20 October to 8 November 2026, replace the summit visit with a walk from Jujigai towards the waterfront warehouses. Strong winds and other factors may change operations on other days. An alternative bus or taxi itinerary to the summit is not included.

If hills or stairs are difficult
The lower ropeway station is about 10 minutes uphill from Jujigai. Mashumaru’s 2nd-floor boarding entrance is reached by stairs, with no elevator or escalator. Skip the ship interior if stairs are difficult. If the lower-station walk is unsuitable, consider other transport actually available on your date separately.

Around Sapporo’s Odori Park
Look at the area around Odori Park on a day when you’re planning a city walk.
Around Otaru Canal
On your canal walking day, use the camera for a look at the area in view.

Look over Hakodate from the summit camera. Confirm ropeway operations for your visit date through official information.
Frequently asked questions
Can I travel in Hokkaido without a rental car?
Yes. You can explore central Sapporo, Otaru and Hakodate by JR, subway, tram and on foot. Check transport separately for other natural areas in Hokkaido. Shiroi Koibito Park requires a walk from Miyanosawa Station, and the Mount Hakodate lower station is uphill, so consider how comfortable those walks are for your group.
