Where should you stay in Iwate, and what should you see?
Stay near Morioka Station if you want city walks, an indoor visit to the historic bank building and local noodle dishes. Hiraizumi suits a trip that gives Motsuji’s garden and Chūson-ji’s Konjikido separate days. Stay in Miyako to enjoy the beach, market and sightseeing boat on different days. Reach Hiraizumi’s temples by train and local bus, and Miyako’s beach by the 106 bus followed by a city bus. Give more nights to the temples or coast you most want to explore, rather than trying to cover all three destinations in one day.
What scenery would you like to see?
For stone walls and architecture on a city walk, visit Morioka Castle Site Park and the Red Brick Building. In Hiraizumi, walk through Motsuji’s garden and see Chūson-ji’s Konjikido and Sankozo. Head to Jodogahama in Miyako for white rocks and sea views, or the memorial museum in Hanamaki for exhibits about Kenji’s writing. The attraction guide brings together fees, closing days and the walks from bus stops.
Choose an itinerary for your stay length
Your route depends on whether you stay in Morioka and take day trips or sleep closer to the temples or coast. Choose your trip length below, then compare the accommodation bases and travel sequence in the two itineraries.
2 days, 1 night
Choose between Morioka’s castle park and architecture exhibits, or two temples on separate days in Hiraizumi. Your departure on day two must leave time to finish sightseeing.
3 days, 2 nights
Stay two nights in Morioka and visit Hiraizumi for the day. If you want to see the beach, compare the route that spends the second night in Miyako and returns to Morioka the following day.
4 days, 3 nights
Stay in Morioka for separate day trips to Hanamaki’s literature exhibits and Hiraizumi’s temples, or spend two nights in Miyako and split the beach and market–boat visits across different days.
5 days, 4 nights
Choose between literature exhibits and two temples on separate days, or temples and a historical exhibition about old Hiraizumi followed by Miyako’s coast. The coastal route visits the Cultural Heritage Center on the morning of day four, then connects by JR train and the 106 bus. Both the temple day and the centre day must fall on Runrun operating dates.

Hiraizumi Station · 平泉駅
Stay near Hiraizumi Station to give Motsuji's garden and Chūson-ji's Konjikido a day each. Walk to Motsuji; for Chūson-ji, take a temple-bound bus, then climb the approach. For Shinkansen arrival, look for a transfer at Ichinoseki to the JR Tohoku Main Line.
Miyako Station · 宮古駅
Spend one or two nights in Miyako for unhurried Jodogahama beach walks, the market and a sightseeing cruise. From the station area, use beach-bound city buses and the Morioka-bound 106 bus. For accommodation near the coast, check station connections and whether a shuttle is available.

Which Morioka neighbourhoods should you explore on foot?
Morioka · 盛岡
In Morioka, cross Kaiun Bridge from the station for a shopping-street walk, or continue from the castle park to Nakanohashi and Konyacho to see building exteriors. Choose your route according to whether you prefer shopping or stone walls and architecture.
From the station to Kaiun Bridge and Zaimokucho
Explore a route from Morioka Station across Kaiun Bridge to Zaimokucho’s shopping street, returning via Asahi Bridge and the Kibushi green space. These neighbourhoods appear in the tourism association’s walking route. Check individual opening days if you plan to visit shops.
From the castle park to Nakanohashi and Konyacho
Morioka Castle Site Park · 盛岡城跡公園
Morioka Castle Site Park is about a 15-minute walk from the station. If you want to visit both the park and the Red Brick Building, continue with a walk past building exteriors around Nakanohashi and Konyacho. This route does not provide unrestricted entry to every building; avoid Tuesdays for an indoor visit to the Red Brick Building.

The temples and coast require further travel from the station
Hiraizumi: start with Motsuji near the station
Hiraizumi · 平泉
Motsuji is about a seven-minute walk from Hiraizumi Station. To reach Chūson-ji, take a temple bus and climb the Tsukimizaka approach after getting off. If you visit both temples in one day, allow separate time for the garden and Konjikido–Sankozo visits, then connect with the bus back to the station after walking down.
Miyako: beach walks and a cruise from Dezaki
Miyako · 宮古
Take a city bus from Miyako Station to Jodogahama Visitor Centre, then walk about 15 minutes to the beach. You can also board the sightseeing boat at Jodogahama Pier. In the three-night itinerary with separate beach and cruise days, the beach walk and market–boat visit fall on different days, and the cruise leaves from Dezaki Pier and returns to the same pier.

Transport, food and cameras
Choose meal stops around your final attraction of the day and the route back to your accommodation. Rail passes and city bus passes cover different routes, and the camera does not replace directions on the ground.
Choosing noodles in Morioka
Jajamen combines udon noodles with meat miso, cucumber and green onion. If you prefer noodles in broth, try Morioka reimen, with springy noodles, broth and kimchi. For a meal served as repeated small bowls of soba, consider wanko soba. Choose a restaurant in the neighbourhood where you finish sightseeing, and check its menu, reservation policy and group requirements.

Compare JR journeys and bus costs separately
The Morioka–Hiraizumi Tohoku Main Line and Morioka–Shin-Hanamaki Tohoku Shinkansen are JR sections covered by the JR EAST PASS. You can also buy ordinary tickets for just the journeys you need. Compare other long-distance trips within the pass’s five or ten consecutive days, and budget separately for Dendenmushi, the 106 bus, temple buses and admission.

Check the capture time on the Jodogahama camera image
The Ministry of the Environment’s source page displays updated images from the camera at Jodogahama Rest House. Check the image capture time before using it to view the beach. An old image cannot establish today’s weather, boat service or path access; confirm sailings with the boat operator.

Travelling to Hanamaki Onsen
If you want to stay at an onsen after visiting the Kenji museum, distinguish Shin-Hanamaki Station from Hanamaki Station. Buses for Hanamaki Onsen and Dai Onsen leave from stop 4 outside Hanamaki Station. The operator lists JPY 510 from Hanamaki Station to Hanamaki Onsen and JPY 580 to Dai Onsen, but fares can vary by route; check both directions for your travel date. Before adding an onsen stay, confirm the connection from the museum to Hanamaki Station and your accommodation’s shuttle, bathing and meal arrangements. Kenji Shihi Iriguchi (賢治詩碑入口) and Kenji Kinenkan Guchi (賢治記念館口) are different stops.

Frequently asked questions
Are both the temples and coast easy day trips if I stay in Morioka throughout?
You can visit Hiraizumi’s two temples on a day trip from Morioka using the JR Tohoku Main Line. Allow time for the temple bus, the uphill visit, the walk back down and your return train. Miyako’s coast requires the 106 bus, a city bus and walking. Compare itineraries with one or two nights in Miyako if you want a leisurely Jodogahama walk or time for the market and sightseeing boat.
