Spend more time on literature and temples, or stay on the coast?

Stay three nights in Morioka to visit the Kenji museum’s literature exhibits and Hiraizumi’s temples on separate days. For separate beach and market–cruise days, spend one night in Morioka followed by two in Miyako. The museum requires uphill walking and stairs after the bus ride. If coastal sailings are cancelled, leave out the cruise and spend the time at the market and walking around town. The Kenji museum route includes JPY 340 for return buses between Shin-Hanamaki Station and the museum entrance stop. Check the official timetable for services on your date and any fare changes.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use the JR EAST PASS for a day trip from Morioka to Hiraizumi?

The JR Tohoku Main Line between Morioka and Hiraizumi is within the JR EAST PASS network. Runrun and regular buses to the temples, along with admission, cost extra. You can also buy ordinary train tickets; the itinerary uses JPY 3,200 return on local trains as a reference. Check the official fare search if your date or train differs. If you already have a pass, check its validity and eligibility conditions before buying duplicate tickets for covered JR journeys.

Can I board the sightseeing boat with the Miyako city bus day pass?

The bus pass alone does not cover the boat. Show a JPY 500 city day pass valid that day and buy a separate discounted adult boat ticket for JPY 1,500. The three-night coastal itinerary budgets one bus pass for the beach day and another for the boat day. If sailings are cancelled, leave out the cruise and spend the time at the market and walking around town.
