Four days in Kyoto: a night in the north?

Keep your Kyoto hotel for separate Nijo, Arashiyama and Uji days, then prepare near the station. For a northern night and next-day pine walk, compare two Kyoto nights and one southern Monju night. Final-day Hashidate connects to your departure in Kyoto; choose the city route if connection time is insufficient.

Two nights in Kyoto City, then one in Amanohashidate

Compare this for Kyoto's palace, Uji's Phoenix Hall and Amanohashidate's pine paths. Stay two nights near Kyoto Station, then one in southern Monju by the sandbar. The final day needs time to return to Kyoto before onward travel. Fuchu hotels across the sandbar have different access and return routes.

Day 1 · Kyoto arrival and Nijo Castle

Give Nijo and Uji separate days from your Kyoto Station base, then spend a night in Amanohashidate. Return to your Kyoto hotel after Nijo on day 1; travel north on day 3.

Day 3 · Reserved-seat train north

Check your date's Hashidate departure and platform. All seats are reserved; prepare full-route fare/limited express tickets and your reserved seat.

  2. Kyoto Station → Amanohashidate Station

Take the direct limited express Hashidate from Kyoto to Amanohashidate without changing at Fukuchiyama. Search departures/arrivals for your date and prepare full-route fare, limited express ticket and reserved seat before boarding.

    Outbound PDFJR Hashidate information

Hashidate has reserved seats only. Check return services in the regular operator timetable and date-specific search, then reserve before boarding. The walk below covers southern Monju. Fuchu accommodation across the sandbar needs different local transport.

Day 4 · Southern sandbar walk, then back to Kyoto

  1. Monju hotel → Southern pine path and Monju

Walk over the Monju/Chion-ji swing bridge and Daitenkyo to the southern pine path. Return over the same two bridges without reaching the far end. After walking and eating, go to Amanohashidate Station. Shorten or omit the walk for your return train.

  2. Amanohashidate Station → Kyoto Station

Take your reserved Hashidate to Kyoto. Check the return arrival time in your date's timetable. For immediate airport/onward travel, allow enough time after arrival for that connection. If it does not fit, choose three Kyoto Station nights with city and Uji visits. For a Kyoto night after returning from the north, compare the 5-day route.

    Inbound PDFJR Hashidate information

Finish the walk and board your reserved return at Amanohashidate. Search immediate airport/onward connections from Kyoto separately. If the arrival leaves insufficient connection time, choose three nights near Kyoto Station. Compare the 5-day route for a Kyoto night after the northern return.

Verified costs and conditions: ¥2,000 · partial basic facility admission total for one adult

Included: Nijo Castle/Ninomaru Palace ¥1,300 and Byodo-in garden/Hoshokan ¥700. Amanohashidate sandbar walks are free.

Separate costs: All rail/subway including return Hashidate, two Kyoto nights and one Monju night, meals, Phoenix Hall interior ¥300, Honmaru Palace, separate exhibitions, boats, viewpoints and airport/onward travel after Kyoto return.

Northern rail costs are separate. JR's October 2026 fare table gives an adult ordinary-car reserved seat in the regular season at ¥5,000 one way, or ¥10,000 return if both dates are regular season. Check return trains, seats, fares, Monju accommodation and onward Kyoto connections together.

If both dates are regular season, return is ¥10,000, including Tango sections. Recheck seasonal fares and reserved seats for actual dates. Must you buy a pass for northern trains?

Hashidate also accepts ordinary fare and limited express tickets. The October 2026 regular-season reserved return is ¥10,000, versus ¥12,000 for an adult five-day Kansai Wide pass. Northern return alone does not make the pass cheaper; compare other covered travel within validity. Check Temporary Visitor/passport conditions and reserve seats. Municipal subway, admission, accommodation and meals are separate.

Frequently asked questions

Can you go straight to the airport after the northern return?

Search actual-date Hashidate returns and Kyoto-to-airport travel against your flight. If arrival leaves too little airport time even after shortening the walk, choose three Kyoto Station nights with city/Uji visits. Compare five days for a Kyoto night after returning. Train arrival alone does not guarantee a flight connection.

Can you compare Kansai Wide for Hashidate?

Kansai Wide is a five-consecutive-day pass covering JR limited express/ordinary trains and Kyoto Tango Railway within its area. Hashidate is reserved-seat only; book seats before boarding. A non-Japanese passport and Temporary Visitor status are required. Kyoto municipal subway, admission, accommodation and meals are separate. Ordinary tickets are also available.
