Four days in Osaka: waterfall walks or tomb exhibits?

Choose three Umeda nights for Minoh Falls or three Namba nights for Mozu exhibits and Kaiyukan. A Kyoto day for Nijo Castle and Arashiyama, or a Kobe Port Tower day, replaces the Minoh/Mozu visit.

For Kyoto or Kobe, choose return JR trains from Osaka to Kyoto or Sannomiya. Check the walk back from local attractions to the station and the return to the same Osaka hotel.

Minoh walk and viewpoints, with daytime Dotonbori on departure day

Choose three nights in Umeda if you want an Osaka trip with a day walking beside the river to a waterfall. Take Hankyu to Minoh Station, then walk to the falls. This route visits the Floating Garden on day 1, the waterfall on day 2 and Osaka Castle on day 3.

Day 1 · Umeda hotel → Floating Garden → hotel

  1. Umeda hotel → JR Osaka Station and Sky Building's dedicated entrance

Arrive by day and have lunch around Osaka Station. Leave JR Osaka's third-floor Bridge Gate towards the Central North Exit. Descend by escalator to the second floor, then the first, and walk beside Grand Front's south building. Cross the intersection and use the short, approximately 40 m underpass; the Sky Building is across the road after returning to street level. The official JR-station route takes about 7 minutes, excluding hotel-to-station travel and building queues. Find the outside observatory entrance, separate from office tower elevators.

  2. Dedicated observatory entrance → Visit and return to your Umeda hotel

Visit and rest in the afternoon, then return to Osaka Station's area for dinner and hotel check-in. Standard hours are 09:30–22:30, with entry until 22:00. After a late arrival, you can move the observatory to after the castle on day 3. Check both facilities' last admission times.

Day 2 · Hankyu Osaka-umeda → Minoh Falls → Umeda

  1. Hankyu Osaka-umeda → Ishibashi handai-mae and Minoh

Finish the waterfall walk in daylight. Check park restrictions, weather and railway notices before leaving. In rain or closures, choose a rest day in Umeda. If postponing to tomorrow, check for a castle closure conflict. After breakfast, take a Hankyu Takarazuka Line train stopping at Ishibashi handai-mae, then change to the Minoh Line towards Minoh.

  2. Minoh Station → Waterfall walk and return to the station

Minoh Station to the Ichinohashi park entrance takes about 5 minutes; station to waterfall takes about 40–50 minutes in total. Do not add those times together. Start in the morning, walk beside the river and rest at the falls. Return along the same path and have lunch near the station. Fatigue or rest stops may make the return longer.

  3. Minoh Station → Ishibashi handai-mae and Umeda

After lunch and a break near the station, take the Minoh Line towards Ishibashi handai-mae and change there to the Takarazuka Line towards Osaka-umeda. Choose return services in the official timetable for your date before leaving, and check platform destination signs when changing.

  3. Castle tower and park → Return via Hommachi to Umeda

After lunch and a park break, return to the station, then take the Chuo Line to Hommachi and Midosuji Line to Umeda. If you missed the observatory on day 1, visit after a meal in Umeda today, allowing transport and walking time between the castle and observatory.

Day 4 · Umeda → Dotonbori → Umeda Station → departure

  1. Umeda hotel → Namba and Dotonbori riverside

For an afternoon departure, take the Midosuji Line towards Tennoji and Nakamozu to Namba, then walk about 5 minutes to the riverside.

  2. Dotonbori riverside → Return to Umeda Station and depart

After the morning walk and lunch in Namba, take the northbound Midosuji Line back to Umeda. A morning river walk does not guarantee shops are open. Skip it if the Namba return trip leaves too little time to reach your departure station.

Mozu tomb exhibits and aquarium, with Namba garden on departure day

Choose separate days for the free Mozu exhibits and Kaiyukan if history and marine life appeal more than a waterfall walk. Stay three nights at the same Namba hotel, with a garden near the station on the final day.

Day 1 · Namba hotel → Dotonbori → Namba hotel

  1. Namba hotel → Dotonbori riverside

After lunch in Namba, walk towards the river. Follow street-level signs from subway Namba towards Ebisubashi and Dotonbori. The tourism bureau's approximately 5-minute walk starts at Midosuji Line Namba Station; the walk from your hotel differs.

  2. Dotonbori riverside → Hotel check-in and dinner

See the riverside and signs in the afternoon, then check in and rest before dinner. The walk itself needs no facility ticket; meals and cruises cost extra. After a late arrival, take only a short evening walk without reducing tomorrow's Mozu exhibit time.

  4. Visitor centre → Optional exterior tomb visit and lunch

After checking notices at the centre, you can choose a walk to the exterior worship area and surroundings of Emperor Nintoku's tomb. Sakai City's approximately 10-minute tomb walk starts at Mozu Station, not the centre. Imperial Household Agency general worship hours are 08:30–17:00. Weekends, Japanese public holidays, 29 December–3 January, events or management work may restrict access; check your date's notices. Finish with the exhibits alone when access is restricted. The basic itinerary excludes a full circuit of the tomb, paid museums, bicycles and balloon activities. Choose a lunch and rest stop that is actually open.

Frequently asked questions

Does a subway day pass cover Minoh or Sakai?

Hankyu to Minoh and JR Hanwa Line travel in Sakai need separate fares. They differ from the pass's Metro and designated city bus coverage.

Do you enter the tombs at Mozu?

The basic visit is the free visitor centre exhibits. It does not enter Emperor Nintoku's tomb; the exterior worship area is optional according to access. Finish with the exhibits alone during restrictions.

Does a JR pass cover all city travel when adding Kyoto or Kobe?

Calculate valid JR sections separately from destination-city transport. Hotel-to-JR-Osaka access, Kyoto/Sannomiya-to-attraction travel and the return are separate. Metro, Hankyu Minoh and Kobe City Loop are not all covered by the same JR pass. Compare ordinary tickets and passes using your actual return sections and validity dates.

Should you combine Kyoto and Kobe in one day?
