Five days in Tochigi: connect two cities or spend two nights at the lake?
For the underground quarry and gyoza, split your stay into two nights in Utsunomiya, one in Nikko and one at Lake Chuzenji. To change hotels less often and explore more lake exhibitions, compare two nights each in Nikko and at the lake. The two-night lake stay visits the villas and natural science museum on separate days, then takes the mountain-road bus down on the final day. The villa itinerary cannot be followed unchanged during its December–March winter closure.
Choose a 5 days, 4 nights itinerary
Two Utsunomiya nights, then one each in Nikko and by the lake
Stay two nights in Utsunomiya, one near Nikko's stations and one at Chuzenji-onsen for the quarry, gyoza, temples and lakeside villas. Start at Tokyo Station and return to Asakusa. Day three's three religious sites involve substantial walking. Villas close December–March, so the itinerary does not apply unchanged in winter.

Stay two nights near Nikko's stations and two at Chuzenji-onsen for two lakeside days. Frequently asked questions
Can one two-day Chuzenji pass cover the return journey for two nights at the lake?
Option B spans three days between the uphill and downhill journeys. One two-day pass cannot cover both, so the budget includes two ordinary one-way fares of JPY 1,250 each. Option A travels up on day four and down on day five, so a two-day Chuzenji Onsen pass started on day four covers both days.
