Where should you stay, and what should you see in Tokyo?
Look at a Ueno-based itinerary for Senso-ji, Ueno Park and the zoo, or a Shinjuku base for gardens, Shibuya and Mount Takao. Compare Tokyo Station when continuing to another city by train. For two days, first choose between Senso-ji with Ueno Zoo and Shinjuku Gyoen with Meiji Jingu. Leave a separate day for Mount Takao's mountain scenery.
Temples, viewpoints or gardens: what would you like to see?
Compare Senso-ji and Skytree in Asakusa, and the zoo and park in Ueno. Shinjuku Gyoen, Meiji Jingu and Shibuya form a western-city option. Give Mount Takao a separate day for a mid-mountain walk. Each attraction guide explains admission, hours and the approach to its entrance.
Itineraries by length of stay
Reduce sightseeing on the first and last days to suit your flights. Choose the place you most want to see on a middle day, then pick an itinerary that returns to the same hotel.
2 days, 1 night
Choose between separate days for Senso-ji and the zoo from Ueno, or the garden and shrine from Shinjuku. This short trip may require shorter visits depending on arrival and departure times.
3 days, 2 nights
Stay two nights in Ueno and choose a viewpoint or the zoo for the middle day. Check Skytree tickets and zoo closure days before deciding.
4 days, 3 nights
Stay in Shinjuku and divide the western garden and shrine from the eastern temple and viewpoint, or spend a day walking partway up Mount Takao. Compare Karuizawa, Echigo-Yuzawa and Kusatsu separately as replacements for an existing city day.
5 days, 4 nights
Choose four nights in Shinjuku for the city and Mount Takao, or four nights in Ueno to spread out the zoo, two gardens and viewpoints. An overnight regional visit replaces a Tokyo hotel night and requires checking the return transport.
Ueno or Shinjuku: where should you stay?
Ueno
Choose this for Asakusa, Ueno Park and the zoo, or an arrival from Narita Airport via Nippori or Ueno.
JR Ueno and Keisei Ueno do not share ticket gates. Check the walk to your hotel from each separately.

Shinjuku

JR, Keio and subway platforms are separate. Check the walk from your planned hotel to each station and exit you’ll use.

Day trips and overnight stays beyond the city
Set aside a full day for Karuizawa or Echigo-Yuzawa
Karuizawa · 軽井沢 is in Nagano Prefecture, while Echigo-Yuzawa · 越後湯沢 is in Niigata Prefecture. Compare them as replacements for a middle day in a 4-day or 5-day trip, rather than brief additions after central Tokyo sightseeing. These options do not add a regional excursion while keeping every stop in the existing A/B itineraries.
For Karuizawa, decide whether to stay around the station or explore Old Karuizawa first. Check separate bus and walking routes within town. Echigo-Yuzawa is reached by Joetsu Shinkansen; the tourism authority's shortest Tokyo journey of 66 minutes covers the train only. Add travel from your hotel to the station and onwards to local facilities.
Either destination works as a day trip only when return trains and facility opening hours fit. For an overnight hot spring stay, settle your accommodation check-in and next-day return train first. Use Echigo-Yuzawa Station in autumn; GALA Yuzawa Station operates only in winter and spring.

Compare an overnight Kusatsu Onsen visit, including the bus connection
Kusatsu Onsen · 草津温泉 is in Gunma Prefecture. Take a bus from JR Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi Station to Kusatsu Onsen Bus Terminal. JR's approximately 25-minute bus journey is not the total travel time including rail and transfer waits.
For a day trip, match the return bus and train with the bathing facility's hours first. Compare an overnight stay if you want to remain through the evening. This changes accommodation, unlike the central-city A/B itineraries, so check both directions separately before booking. Bus fares, pass coverage, accommodation and bathing fees also need separate confirmation.
Kusakaru Kotsu also runs buses from Karuizawa to Kusatsu. They do not take reservations, and a full bus may mean waiting for the next one. Road delays are possible, so avoid tight Shinkansen connections. Use the operator's timetable for your travel date to check the return journey.

Tokyo Wide Pass and Nikko Pass suit different trips
JR Tokyo Wide Pass costs ¥16,000 for adults and lasts three consecutive days from the chosen start date. It is not a five-day pass covering a whole 5-day trip. Tokyo Metro, Toei Subway and Keio are excluded. An original passport issued by a country other than Japan is required. A Temporary Visitor immigration status is not required.
Tobu NIKKO PASS all area is for foreign travellers; Japanese people travelling with them may also purchase it. It costs ¥8,000 for adults and is valid for four days, covering one return trip between Asakusa and Shimo-imaichi and specified rail and bus services in the Nikko area. Limited express tickets and temple admission are separate. Do not choose it for Karuizawa, Echigo-Yuzawa or Kusatsu. The JR Wide Pass's through limited express services onto Tobu require either the departure or arrival station to be a JR station; they should not be confused with Tobu limited express trains departing Asakusa.
Add up individual fares for your actual trains and dates before comparing. Avoid counting a covered segment again as an individual fare, and include uncovered sections. Check eligibility and collection or exchange conditions when purchasing.

Check airport train notices for your travel date
If you use Narita Express to or from Shinjuku, check the official service notices and reservation screen for your travel date to confirm stops and operating sections. When airport connections change, settle the airport journey before sightseeing.
Tokyo neighbourhoods to explore together
In Tokyo · 東京都, separate central-city sightseeing from Mount Takao in Hachioji. Disney Resort is in Chiba Prefecture, while Kamakura and Hakone are separate destinations in Kanagawa Prefecture. Plan a separate itinerary for Tokyo's islands, which require boat or air travel.
Asakusa · 浅草: temple and viewpoints
Continue from Senso-ji to Skytree if you want a high-level view after the temple visit and walk. Go to Tobu Asakusa Station first and get off at Tokyo Skytree Station. A short temple-only visit costs less than one including the observatory. For a free view, also compare the eighth floor of Asakusa Culture Tourist Information Center.

Ueno · 上野: zoo and park
Spend a day at Ueno Zoo if seeing animals is your priority. You can also choose a park walk and Toshogu, but zoo admission and Toshogu's paid viewing area are separate from the park. Check access from Okachimachi for Kyu-Iwasaki-tei Gardens and Yushima Tenmangu, and spread those visits across other days.

Shinjuku · 新宿: gardens and western viewpoints
Approach Shinjuku Gyoen from JR Shinjuku Station's South Exit, and the government building's South Observatory and Shinjuku Central Park from the West Exit. Calculate walking times from the appropriate side of the station. Splitting the garden, free observatory and park across different days can leave room for a short departure-day visit.

Harajuku · 原宿 / Shibuya · 渋谷
Enter Meiji Jingu through the South Entrance on the Harajuku side. Visit the shrine first, then go to Shibuya for Hachiko and the crossing area. The shrine closes around sunset, so avoid leaving it until after late shopping. In Shibuya, compare JR's recommended South Gate approach.

Mt. Takao · 高尾山: a day walking midway up the mountain
Take Keio from Shinjuku to Takaosanguchi, then walk to Kiyotaki Station for the cable car. Its upper station is below the summit. Transport, costs, meals and related guides
Choose whether to eat in the neighbourhood you are visiting or return to your hotel area for a meal. Meals are excluded from itinerary subtotals.
Asakusa: a meal after the temple walk
Consider Edomae sushi in Asakusa. After Senso-ji, decide whether to eat locally before going to Skytree or after the observatory. The existing food guide also lists tempura and grilled eel options. Check each restaurant's menu and opening hours.
Ueno: yakitori or a meal after the zoo
Look for izakaya and yakitori restaurants under Ueno's elevated railway. You can eat in Ueno after the zoo and return to the same hotel. If adding Ameyoko shopping, consider the extra walking.
Shinjuku: ramen or dinner after returning to your hotel area
Otaki-bashi-dori, known for its ramen shops, runs from west of JR Shinjuku Station towards Okubo Station. Eating in Shinjuku after the garden, shrine or Mount Takao reduces the need for another evening trip across town.
Shibuya: combine your walk with a meal
On the day you walk around Hachiko and the crossing, choose whether to eat in Shibuya or return to your Shinjuku hotel area. Browse ramen and yakitori options in the existing food guide, then check the restaurant's menu, hours and your return station.

Compare hourly subway passes with individual fares
Decide how much you will use Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway before comparing. JR, Tobu, Keio, airport railways and the Mount Takao Cable Car are separate from this subway pass.
For one return trip, start with individual fares
The verified adult subway return fare in this representative itinerary is ¥356 with IC or ¥360 with paper tickets. That return trip alone costs less than the ¥1,000 24-hour pass. Add any other lines and journeys before comparing.

Ordinary tickets last 24, 48 or 72 hours from first use
Ordinary adult Tokyo Subway Tickets cost ¥1,000 for 24 hours, ¥1,500 for 48 hours and ¥2,000 for 72 hours. Nights stayed and pass hours are different, so compare your first ticket-gate entry with your final journey. Regional JR rail passes cover different lines.
Tokyo Subway Ticket is for foreign visitors to Japan and domestic travellers living outside Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama, Chiba, Ibaraki, Tochigi, Gunma and Yamanashi. Foreign visitors show a passport to establish eligibility for in-person purchases; online purchase is also available. Domestic travellers should check their separate sellers and purchase conditions. Attraction combination tickets have no residency restriction. Ordinary tickets start from the first ticket-gate entry, while IC tickets start at purchase, so check which product you are buying.

Set closure days and return times first
Choose open days for the zoo and garden, and plan your return from Mount Takao first.
For Monday visits, check the zoo and Shinjuku Gyoen calendars
Both facilities have Monday closures and exceptions. Public holiday and special seasonal openings differ, so check each calendar for your date. Move zoo or garden visits to another open day if needed, and use that day for a temple or street walk instead.

Visit Mount Takao when a return cable car journey is possible
Plan the downhill cable car and Shinjuku-bound train before the mid-mountain walk. If strong winds or a suspension prevent cable car use, omit the mountain that day rather than substituting a walk to the summit.
