Choose this if the zoo is open on day 2 and you have time for the airport afterwards. Check official arrangements for Mondays, year-end/New Year and public-holiday exceptions. Do not follow this two-attraction plan unchanged on a closure day or when you need to leave for the airport in the morning. After a late first-day arrival, choose just Senso-ji or the zoo on day 2 for a more relaxed visit. The confirmed paid subtotal is JPY 600 + JPY 356 = JPY 956 by IC card, or JPY 960 with paper tickets. Temple special access, prayers, souvenirs, meals, storage, accommodation, flights, airport transport and separate temple activities are excluded.

Subtotal of confirmed paid items: IC card JPY 956 / paper tickets JPY 960

Included: Ueno Zoo JPY 600 plus return Ginza Line travel between Ueno and Asakusa (IC card JPY 356 / paper tickets JPY 360).

Extra costs and conditions: JR, Tobu, airport transport, station-to-hotel journeys, meals and accommodation are excluded from this subtotal.

Shinjuku Gyoen and Meiji Jingu

Stay one night in Shinjuku, visit Shinjuku Gyoen on day 1 and Meiji Jingu on day 2. See the garden and shrine on separate days, then collect bags at your hotel before leaving for the airport.

Day 1 · Afternoon walk in Shinjuku Gyoen

From Narita Airport, check a Narita Express (N’EX) service stopping at Shinjuku and reserve your seat. Get off at JR Shinjuku and use your hotel’s recommended exit.

  1. Airport arrival station → Shinjuku Station area

From Haneda, compare Keikyu to Shinagawa followed by the JR Yamanote Line towards Shibuya and Shinjuku. Use your hotel’s recommended exit at Shinjuku.

  2. Shinjuku Station south exit → Gyoen’s Shinjuku Gate and the same hotel

Walk about 10 minutes from the south exit to Shinjuku Gate; this itinerary does not use the subway for the garden. Enter before last admission, walk and rest, then leave through the same gate and return along the same route. Adult admission is JPY 500. From 1 October to 14 March, last admission is 16:00 and closing 16:30. Eat in Shinjuku afterwards and return to your hotel. Check closures and reservation conditions in the Ministry of the Environment guide. A late arrival or closure makes a day 1 garden visit difficult.

This assumes a hotel within walking reach of JR Shinjuku’s south exit and subway Shinjuku-sanchome. For a late arrival or garden closure, skip the garden and eat in Shinjuku.

Day 2 · Meiji Jingu, then return to Shinjuku

At Shinjuku-sanchome, take a Fukutoshin Line train towards Shibuya that stops at F15.

  1. Shinjuku-sanchome (F13) → Meiji-jingumae (F15) and shrine main sanctuary

Shinjuku-sanchome and JR Shinjuku are separate stations. One-way fares are JPY 178 by IC card or JPY 180 for paper tickets; the official search’s representative ride is about 5 minutes. Use exit 2 at F15 and find the south entrance on the Harajuku side. Official access lists about 1 minute from the station to the entrance and at least another 10 minutes to the sanctuary. Platform-to-exit movement and waits are extra. Worship and walk the forest paths in the morning, rest, then return through the south entrance and exit 2. The paid garden and museum are excluded.

You visit Shinjuku Gyoen on day 1 and the shrine on day 2, so check the garden’s opening dates. Shrine gates vary by month; October hours are 05:40–16:40. A morning visit gives time for the forest paths before closing. The paid subtotal is garden JPY 500 + return subway JPY 356 = JPY 856 by IC card, or JPY 860 with paper tickets. Special use of the grounds, meals, storage, accommodation, flights and airport transport are excluded. For only the confirmed return subway journeys in these two itineraries, individual fares of JPY 356 / 360 cost less than the JPY 1,000 24-hour tourist ticket.
