Toyama travel: where should I start?
For a first Toyama trip, stay near Toyama Station and start with the city. Reach Amaharashi’s coast via Takaoka, or Murodo’s mountains via Tateyama. Give Gokayama a separate day for the gassho village. For a short stay, choose either the mountain or village.
Start with the park, coast, mountains or gassho village?
Walk beside the canal at Kansui Park, then continue to the Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art and Design. The park walk is free; exhibitions of art and design have an admission fee. To visit both on the same day, choose your exhibition time first and fit the walk around it. With another day available, choose Zuiryuji Temple and Amaharashi Coast in Takaoka, Murodo in Tateyama, or Suganuma Gassho-zukuri Village in Gokayama. The attraction guide covers what to see, departure stations, fees and operating conditions for each place.
Itineraries by trip length
Stay near Toyama Station and visit the park and museum, coast, mountains and gassho village on separate days. For Murodo, check the operating season and return connections. The final five-day itinerary offers a separate option with one night in Gokayama.
2 days, 1 night
Choose a relaxed walk around the park and museum north of the station, or visit Zuiryuji Temple and Amaharashi Coast in Takaoka on day two. Both options include one night in Toyama.
3 days, 2 nights
Add a day in the mountains at Murodo or a visit to Suganuma Gassho-zukuri Village between your Toyama walks. Both routes keep your accommodation in Toyama. Plan the middle day around mountain transport operating dates or the World Heritage Bus timetable.
4 days, 3 nights
Combine Murodo with the coast, or Suganuma Gassho-zukuri Village with the coast. Stay in Toyama and visit destinations in different directions on separate days.
5 days, 4 nights
Choose return day trips from Toyama to Murodo, Suganuma and the coast, or spend one night in Gokayama. The village overnight route has two nights in Toyama, one in Gokayama and a final night in Toyama. Match your accommodation address to the correct bus stop first.
Where should I book a hotel?
Toyama Station area
Stay near Toyama Station for city museums and rail day trips. The northern walking area suits park and museum visits; mountain-bound local trains depart from Dentetsu-Toyama Station.
Hotel JAL City Toyama · ホテルJALシティ富山
For a hotel south of the station, consider Hotel JAL City Toyama, about three minutes on foot from JR Toyama’s south side. These itineraries also work with other hotels.

Takaoka Station area
Stay near Takaoka Station to focus on Zuiryuji and Amaharashi. Takaoka Station and Shinkansen-served Shin-Takaoka Station are different; check which is nearer your booked hotel.
Tateyama area
For Murodo’s mountain section as your priority, compare Tateyama-area hotels. First check how to reach the first connecting service from the hotel and whether pickup is available.
A Gokayama stay
For a slower stay in a gassho-style village, spend one night in Gokayama. Check your booked hotel’s bus stop, meals, transfers and last bus.
Gassho no Sato Cottage · 合掌造りコテージ 合掌の里
For a whole cottage with self-prepared meals, consider Gassho no Sato Cottage. It is about one minute from Gassho no Sato (合掌の里) stop and about 800 m from Suganuma village. Depending on the cottage, maximum capacity is 10, 15 or 16 guests. The official reference rate is JPY 50,600 per cottage for up to five guests. Check availability, prices for your date and meal preparation arrangements before booking. For a different hotel, use the stop matching its address.

Before travelling and booking
Check timetables and closures for your travel dates
Murodo mountain transport seasons and timetables vary. The operator’s planned 2026 season is April 15–November 30; November requires separate timetables and WEB ticket sales checks. For the next season, start with new operating notices. Reservations specify the Tateyama cable car departure; check remaining seats on the booking site. Search Ainokaze, JR Himi Line and World Heritage Bus services, suspensions and return connections separately for your date. Check museum closures, winter rooftop closure and seasonal temple cutoffs. Adult collection admission is JPY 350 and ordinary Murodo return transport JPY 10,220; confirm available dates separately from prices.

Distinguish your hotel from the mountain journey’s departure station
City parks and the museum are north of Toyama Station. Find your hotel–station route using its address. Mountain-bound local trains depart from Dentetsu-Toyama, rather than JR platforms.

Compare whether your travel calls for Hokuriku Area Pass
Ordinary Takaoka/Amaharashi return rail costs JPY 1,260, or JPY 2,040 including the Gokayama day’s JPY 780 Toyama–Takaoka return. There is no need to buy the JPY 7,000 adult four-day Hokuriku Area Pass for only these nearby journeys. If also using JR to reach Toyama or another region, compare actual covered sections and their fares together. Ainokaze coverage requires the entire two-station section without alighting elsewhere. A passport issued by a government other than Japan and Temporary Visitor status are also required.

What should I eat in Toyama?
For local food, consider masuzushi (ます寿し), made with trout and rice. Official tourism guidance describes Toyama Bay sushi as using Toyama Prefecture rice and seasonal fish caught in Toyama Bay. Choose a restaurant in the food guide below and check opening hours, that day’s menu and booking conditions. Meals are excluded from itinerary subtotals.

Fugan Canal Kansui Park · 富岩運河環水公園 Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art and Design · 富山県美術館
Both are north of the station. Choose the park for outdoor walking or the museum for indoor exhibitions. For both in one day, choose your exhibition time first and place the walk before or after it. Two-day option A walks the park on day one and visits the museum on the final day.

Takaoka and Amaharashi: temple, then coast
Takaoka · 高岡 Zuiryuji Temple · 瑞龍寺 Amaharashi Coast · 雨晴海岸
After Takaoka’s Zuiryuji, take the JR Himi Line from Takaoka Station to Amaharashi Coast. Walk from the station’s south side to the temple, then take another train to the coast. Check both rail sections’ Toyama return timetables first and allow meal and coastal walking time separately. Weather can hide the mountains across the sea.

Via Tateyama to Murodo: a mountain day
Murodo · 室堂
Take a local train from Dentetsu-Toyama, then Tateyama’s cable car and Bijodaira’s Highland Bus to Murodo. For a Toyama return day trip, plan mountain visiting time and connections through to the return local train together. Set the itinerary after checking the cable car booking time and seasonal service period. Visit Suganuma another day: its World Heritage Bus requires travelling towards Takaoka.

Change to the World Heritage Bus at Takaoka for Suganuma. For a day trip, alight at 菅沼, walk in daylight and return. Which camera should I check before Murodo?
Official Murododaira camera
Murododaira · 室堂平
Open the Alpine Route operator’s camera for mountain views at Murododaira. Check capture date and time first and distinguish a full-day timelapse from current footage that day. The camera cannot show cable car/highland-bus service status or remaining ticket seats. Check the operator’s service information and booking screen separately before leaving.
