Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art and Design

富山県美術館

Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art and Design holds paintings alongside posters and chair designs. Explore it for everyday-object design as well as art. Displays change; consult your visit date’s exhibition guide to choose what to see. Adult ordinary collection admission is JPY 350; special exhibitions cost extra.

  • Collection fees and effective dateAdult ordinary collection admission is JPY 350, effective July 1, 2026. Check separate guidance for special exhibitions and free-admission eligibility.
  • Museum and rooftop hoursThe museum opens 09:30–18:00, last admission 17:30. Check your date’s calendar for Wednesday, post-public-holiday, New Year and other closures and exceptions. Rooftop hours are 08:00–22:00, last admission 21:30, with closure December 1–March 15. Weather can restrict access.
  • Walk or bus from the stationThe official walk from Toyama Station’s north exit is about 15 minutes. If going via the park, add park walking time separately. Another option is a bus from north bay 1 via Toyama Red Cross Hospital and the prefectural museum; alight at the museum stop for direct access. Check fares, travel-date services and step-free entrances in official guidance.

Fugan Canal Kansui Park

富岩運河環水公園

Walk and rest by the water without travelling far from Toyama Station. Look towards the canal and Tenmon Bridge or rest near the lawns. About nine minutes on foot from the north exit, the park walk is free. The towers open 09:00–21:30; check cruises’ separate fares and sailing days.

  • Park admission and extra costsPark admission and waterfront walks are free. Cruises, cafés and meals are excluded.
  • Park and tower hoursThe park itself is always open. Tenmon Bridge observation towers open 09:00–21:30, separately from park access. Shorten walks in strong wind or rain.
  • Walk from Toyama Station’s north sideThe city tourism association gives about nine minutes on foot from Toyama Station’s north exit. Add hotel–station travel, movement within the station and traffic-light waits. Return towards the same north exit.

Zuiryuji Temple

瑞龍寺

At Zuiryuji, examine the National Treasure-designated main gate, Buddha hall and lecture hall and the corridors connecting buildings. Visit in Takaoka if historic Japanese temple architecture interests you. Ordinary adult admission is JPY 500; enter at least 30 minutes before closing. Winter closing is earlier.

  • Visiting hours and winter closingOpen 09:00–16:30, last admission 30 minutes before closing. Closes at 16:00 December 10–January 31.

Amaharashi Coast

Walk or take photos of Amaharashi Coast’s sea and rocky island. Clear weather and good visibility can reveal the Tateyama range across the water, but mountains are not always visible. The coast walk is free and about five minutes from Amaharashi Station. Check your Himi Line return to plan how long to stay.

  • JR Himi Line, directions and returnTake a Himi-bound JR Himi Line train from Takaoka to Amaharashi. The official tourist guide gives a five-minute walk to the coast. Return on a Takaoka-bound train.
  • Views and neighbouring rest facilityWeather can hide the Tateyama range across the sea. Michi-no-Eki Amaharashi is a neighbouring rest facility, separate from the coast itself.

Murodo

For mountain scenery away from the city, give Murodo a day. The terminal’s rooftop exit opens onto Murododaira. Transfer from Dentetsu-Toyama between rail, cable car and Highland Bus; the ordinary adult same-route return costs JPY 10,220. Choose walking areas around mountain weather and on-site restrictions and arrange return connections through to the local train.

  • Mountain transport return fareThe ordinary adult return fare applicable from April 15, 2026 is JPY 10,220 for Dentetsu-Toyama–Tateyama–Bijodaira–Murodo and back the same way. It includes rail, cable car and Highland Bus, without continuing to Kurobe Dam or Ogizawa. Special or reserved-seat charges, meals and accommodation cost extra.
  • Mountain transport operating season and timetablesThese dates describe mountain transport, rather than Murodo-area opening hours. The operator’s planned 2026 season is April 15–November 30. Timetables vary by season and weekday/weekend. Choose ascent and return services, including the local train, in your date’s schedule. Outside the period, this route cannot be followed unchanged. Check the snow corridor viewing period and weather suspensions separately.
  • Murodo outward and return routeTake a Tateyama-bound local train from Dentetsu-Toyama to Tateyama Station, the cable car to Bijodaira, then a Highland Bus to Murodo. Return in the order Murodo–Bijodaira–Tateyama–Dentetsu-Toyama.
  • Ticket collection and transfer timeAllow ticket collection and transfer time between the train journey and booked Tateyama departure.
  • Official timetable and fare sourcesCheck travel-date services and return fares in the operator timetables and section fare tables below.
  • The WEB ticket’s reservation timeFor a WEB ticket, register as a member and select the date, section, one-way or return journey and departure time. On the Toyama side, the specified time is the Tateyama departure, not the Dentetsu-Toyama train departure. Busy-period guidance says arrive at the departure station 30 minutes before and collect the ticket at least 15 minutes before. Check ticketing conditions in the WEB ticket guide below.
  • WEB ticket sales conditions for your dateSales periods, deadlines and bookable departures vary by season and product. After choosing your date and Tateyama departure section, check availability and remaining seats on the official booking site. For dates without sales, consult same-day ticket guidance.
  • Return connections and seasonal final servicesReturn by Highland Bus to Bijodaira, cable car to Tateyama and train to Dentetsu-Toyama. Connections vary by season and weekday or weekend; check the official timetable through to the last connecting train. The final mountain connection alone does not guarantee a return to Toyama city. Final mountain connections run earlier in November, so choose your return services first.
  • Explore from the terminal and returnMurodo Terminal’s rooftop opens onto Murododaira; restaurants and shops are inside. Walk according to weather and on-site restrictions and return to the same terminal before your bus. Meals cost extra.

Suganuma Gassho-zukuri Village in Gokayama

Suganuma Gassho-zukuri Village菅沼合掌造り集落

Walk Suganuma’s lanes outside the gassho-style houses for mountain-village scenery. People live here; do not enter homes without permission. For indoor exhibitions, check individual opening and admission. Visit by World Heritage Bus from Takaoka; bus fares and meals cost extra.

  • Village visits and residential spacesThis is a residential village in Nanto. Distinguish residents’ homes from visitable exhibition facilities; do not enter homes without permission.
  • Village visiting hoursOfficial visiting hours are 08:00–17:00 April–November and 09:00–17:00 December–March. Closed December 31 and January 1. Visit in daylight and avoid coming after sunset. Check individual exhibitions and restaurants separately.
  • World Heritage Bus and reserved seatsTake the World Heritage Bus from bay 7 outside Takaoka Station to Suganuma (菅沼). Return from the Takaoka-bound stop. Check village entry and return boarding locations on the official area map. Search your date’s services and unreserved-seating conditions alongside the Takaoka–Toyama return train. The tourism body gives a one-minute walk from Suganuma stop to the village. For a step-free route, contact the village; check the return stop on the official map.
  • Vehicle contributions and extra costsConservation contributions are JPY 1,000 per ordinary car and JPY 300 per motorcycle. These vehicle charges are not admission for bus visitors. Indoor exhibits, meals and bus fares cost extra. Consult the bus operator for fares and returns, and the village’s official access guide for the stop–village approach.
  • Two-day Gokayama pass and reserved seatingThe adult Gokayama free pass costs JPY 2,800 and is valid two days from first use. It is for World Heritage Buses between Takaoka Station/Shin-Takaoka Station and Sasara-kan-mae. It cannot be combined with a reserved-seat ticket and does not secure a seat. Toyama–Takaoka rail, accommodation, indoor exhibitions and meals cost extra.
