Where should you stay in Yamanashi: Kawaguchiko or Kofu?

Stay near Kawaguchiko Station for Mount Fuji views and lake walks, or near Kofu Station for art and castle ruins. Focus on one base for a short trip; with at least three nights, compare moving from Kofu to Kawaguchiko with staying around the lake.

Which Yamanashi attractions should I visit?

Choose the ropeway for Mount Fuji views from above, Oishi Park for lakeside walking, or Appare for a cruise. For indoor sightseeing in rain, choose between the gem museum's rough and processed stones and the World Heritage Center's explanation of Mount Fuji's heritage. Gemstone exhibits are paid; the centre is free. For Millet works and castle ruins, consider Kofu's art museum and Maizuru Castle Park together. Seeing Kofu and the lake requires city-to-city travel, so choose your overnight base.

Itineraries by trip length

Decide whether to move hotels before choosing an itinerary. Two days focus on one base; three days stay around Kawaguchiko. From four days, compare adding Kofu's museum and castle ruins with staying around the lake.

2 days, 1 night

Spend one night in Kawaguchiko for Mount Fuji views and gemstones, or Kofu for art and castle ruins. If leaving on the second morning, shorten the itinerary by skipping that day's sightseeing.

3 days, 2 nights

Stay two nights in Kawaguchiko for north-shore walking and gemstone exhibits on separate days. A visits the viewpoint on the first afternoon; B starts with the north shore on the first morning and gives day 2 to World Heritage exhibits and a cruise.

4 days, 3 nights

Spend one night in Kofu then two in Kawaguchiko, or three nights around the lake? A adds art and castle ruins with a hotel move; B keeps the same base for the viewpoint, north shore, exhibits and boat.

5 days, 4 nights

Both options spend one night in Kofu and three in Kawaguchiko. Compared with the 4-day Kofu-stay itinerary, the extra day adds either the viewpoint or World Heritage exhibits and Appare. Both visit the gem museum on the last day.

Where should I stay?

Lake Kawaguchiko · 河口湖

Stay near Kawaguchiko Station if you plan to use trains and sightseeing buses. You can also compare lakeside accommodation for views, but check travel to and from the station and evening meal options. Oishi Park is on the north shore, requiring a bus ride from the station area.

Kofu · 甲府

Stay near Kofu Station for the art museum and castle ruins, or to continue to another city on the Chuo Line. Museum buses and Maizuru Castle Park are south of the station; K1 buses to Kawaguchiko leave from the north. Check your hotel location and which exit you need.

Rail passes and regular tickets

Arriving by train from Tokyo

One option is the JR Chuo Line from Shinjuku, changing at Otsuki to Fujikyu Railway for Kawaguchiko. The JR TOKYO Wide Pass covers eligible JR East and Fujikyu Railway sections, costs ¥16,000 per adult and lasts three consecutive days. Reserved seats on the Fujisan Limited Express and Fujisan View Express, and the Fuji Tozan Densha, require extra charges. It does not cover the Tokaido Shinkansen.

You can also buy regular tickets and any required limited-express tickets separately. Compare Tokyo return days and other JR travel together before choosing. One three-consecutive-day pass cannot cover both the first and last days of a five-day trip. You need an original valid passport issued by a country other than Japan; Temporary Visitor status is not required to buy this pass. Check collection locations and reserved seats before leaving.

Compare lake buses with separate tickets

Do not apply the JR TOKYO Wide Pass's rail coverage to Red Line or Blue Line buses or Appare tickets. Calculate this itinerary's local buses and cruises separately. North-shore park itinerary totals include a ¥1,500 adult bus day pass, but regular tickets may cost less depending on the number of rides.

For only two Red Line rides on the gemstone museum day, regular tickets cost ¥180 each, or ¥360 return—¥1,140 less than that day's ¥1,500 bus pass. Decide the cheapest combination across other days and a possible 2-day pass only after comparing the actual visit order and coverage. Accommodation, meals, luggage storage and return travel outside the prefecture are excluded from all eight itinerary subtotals.

A day trip instead of a night in Kofu

To visit only Kofu's castle ruins for a day from Kawaguchiko, check K1 timetables towards Kofu Station's north side and back to Kawaguchiko Station. Choose a morning outward bus and afternoon return, focusing on Maizuru Castle Park, officially about three minutes on foot from Kofu Station's south exit. Allow separately for crossing between the north and south sides and returning to the north bay after lunch.

This day trip visits the castle ruins without taking a museum bus. Check opening days to see inside Inari Turret and Kurogane Gate. Confirm services and temporary changes for your date in the operator's timetable, and calculate this return trip separately from the eight existing itinerary totals.

Mount Fuji views or exhibits: what would you like to see?

View the mountain from above or walk beside the lake?

Choose the ropeway for views towards Mount Fuji from above, or Oishi Park to see it while walking by the lake. Board the ropeway on the southeast shore; take a bus to Oishi Park on the north shore. Clouds may hide the mountain, and strong winds may stop the ropeway.

Which exhibits can I visit on a rainy day?

In Kawaguchiko, compare rough and processed gemstones or learn about Mount Fuji's nature and culture at the World Heritage Center. For Millet works, visit Kofu's prefectural art museum. It requires city-to-city travel from Kawaguchiko and is not a nearby exhibit you can switch to immediately in rain. Choose dates around each facility's closures.

For a boat ride or castle-ruins walk

Appare leaves Funatsu pier and returns to the same pier about 20 minutes later. It differs from the boat serving Oishi Park. For a short walk from Kofu Station, choose Maizuru Castle Park. If the keep-platform steps are difficult, walk only around the lower ruins.

Areas to group into a day

Kawaguchiko Station and Funatsu lakeshore

On the ropeway day, have lunch at the station and walk about 15 minutes to the lakeside station. On the World Heritage Center and Appare day, return to the station after morning exhibits, then walk about 10 minutes to Funatsu pier. Ropeway queues may overlap boat departures; allow separate visit and travel time if you want both attractions.

North shore and Oishi Park

Get off the Red Line at the Natural Living Center terminus and combine Oishi Park with lunch on the north shore. This reduces extra return journeys to the station for food. Return on the station-bound Red Line. The gemstone museum visit is the following morning before returning to the station.

Kofu Station south side, art museum and castle ruins

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to move hotels to see both Kawaguchiko and Kofu?

For unhurried art and castle visits, choose a 4- or 5-day itinerary with one Kofu night before moving to Kawaguchiko. Use Kofu Station for the museum and castle ruins, and Kawaguchiko Station for lake views, cruises and gemstones. After Kofu sightseeing, take a K1 bus from the north side to Kawaguchiko Station. To keep the same hotel, make a day trip from Kawaguchiko to Kofu's castle ruins only. Check both the morning Kofu-bound and afternoon Kawaguchiko-bound K1 services for your date.
