Yamanashi in 2 days: explore from one base
Choose one base for a 2-day trip. For Mount Fuji views, ride Kawaguchiko's ropeway on day 1 and visit the gem museum the next day. This plan arrives around noon for afternoon viewpoint sightseeing.
For indoor art and castle ruins, visit Kofu's museum on day 1 and walk Maizuru Castle Park the next day. Arrive in time for morning museum viewing and take a bus from the station's south side. Skip the last day's sightseeing if leaving that morning.
Choose a 2 days, 1 night itinerary
Viewpoint and gemstone museum
Spend one night near Kawaguchiko Station. Visit the ropeway viewpoint on day 1 in suitable weather, then the gemstone exhibits on day 2 before an afternoon departure.

Choose this for the museum collection and Kofu Castle's stone walls and reconstructed buildings. Stay one night near Kofu Station, taking a museum bus on the first morning and walking from the station to the castle ruins the next day.

Day 1: Kawaguchiko Station → ropeway viewpoint → Kawaguchiko Station
- Kawaguchiko Station → Lakeside ropeway station
Arrive at Kawaguchiko Station around noon and have lunch nearby. The official guide gives about 15 minutes on foot to the lakeside ropeway station. Take the ropeway first in the afternoon, then have a short lakeside walk after descending. Allow for viewing and boarding queues so you finish before the last ascent and descent. Check the operator's seasonal last services.

- Lakeside ropeway station → Kawaguchiko Station and the same hotel
If wind stops the ropeway or queues are long, skip it and rest by the same lakeshore. Kofu's art museum is in another city and is not an immediate substitute that day. Return to the station area for dinner and stay at the same hotel.

Strong winds or maintenance can stop the ropeway. Check the last ascent and descent and suspension notices for your date.
Day 2: Kawaguchiko Station → Yamanashi Gem Museum → Kawaguchiko Station
- Kawaguchiko Station → Yamanashi Gem Museum
From station bay 1, take the Red Line towards Kawaguchiko Natural Living Center. Match the station departure with arrival at stop 6, Yamanashi Gem Museum/Kawaguchiko, in your date's timetable; choose the station-bound return. Follow museum signs to the exhibition entrance after getting off. Allow walking time from the stop to the entrance separately from the bus ride.

Closed Wednesdays except public holidays, Golden Week, July and August. Adjust your dates rather than treating a visit to the free shop on a closed day as a museum visit. Winter opening is 9:30 a.m.; match your selected bus arrival with the actual opening time.

- Yamanashi Gem Museum → Return to the station and hotel
See the gemstone and mineral exhibits in the morning. This indoor visit differs from day 1's Mount Fuji views; plan lunch and a break near the museum. Walk to the Kawaguchiko Station-bound stop and take the return chosen from your date's timetable. The same stop name appears again in the loop table, so match museum departure and station arrival in the station-bound service column. Choose a bus you can catch after the visit, lunch and walk from the entrance. Book an afternoon departure allowing for bus delays and preparations after reaching the station. This visit does not fit a morning departure.

Check the museum's Wednesday closure exceptions and station-bound Red Line. Skip the final-morning exhibit visit if you leave that morning.
Included: Adult ropeway return: ¥1,000 through October 2026. Adult gemstone exhibition: ¥600 plus regular Red Line tickets between Kawaguchiko Station and the museum, ¥180 × 2 = ¥960.
Extra costs and conditions: Excludes one night's accommodation, meals, luggage storage, return travel outside the prefecture, separate activities and shopping. Extra paid transport between station and hotel is excluded. The ropeway approach is on foot from the station; buses and taxis for that section are excluded.
This sums admission and the listed local transport for one adult at regular rates, checked October 8, 2026. It is not a total trip budget including accommodation, meals and travel outside the prefecture. When the ropeway return fare rises to ¥1,200 on November 1, 2026, the subtotal becomes ¥2,160 if other items stay the same. Recheck fares, opening and service conditions for your date.

Kofu collection exhibits and castle ruins
Choose this for the museum collection and Kofu Castle's stone walls and reconstructed buildings. Stay one night near Kofu Station, taking a museum bus on the first morning and walking from the station to the castle ruins the next day.
Day 1: Kofu Station south bay 1 → art museum → Kofu Station
- Kofu Station south bay 1 → Prefectural art museum
Arrive in Kofu in time for a morning museum visit and go to bay 1 at the south bus terminal. Take a specified service stopping at the prefectural art museum, such as route 35 towards Nirasaki Station via Okusa. In the official timetable for both directions, check station departure, museum arrival and weekday, weekend/holiday and specified-period service symbols (○/●/×). Change your date if it falls on a closure, such as Monday (the following day if Monday is a holiday) or the day after a holiday. If you arrive late, adjust viewing and meal time or change the museum day.

Day 2: Kofu Station south side → Maizuru Castle Park → Kofu Station
- Kofu Station south side → Maizuru Castle Park (Kofu Castle Ruins)
Start at Kofu Station's south exit in the morning. The tourism association gives about three minutes on foot to Maizuru Castle Park. See the walls and reconstructed gates; on opening days, explore inside Inari Turret and Kurogane Gate. This is a day for Kofu Castle's surviving stone walls and ruins, separate from yesterday's art visit. If climbing to the keep platform is difficult, choose a lower park walk instead of the stepped viewpoint.

- Facility entrance → Castle walk and open buildings
Inari Turret and Kurogane Gate open 9:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m., with entry until 4:00 p.m. They close Mondays, the day after public holidays, and December 29–January 3; open on Mondays that are holidays. The park itself stays open, so limit your visit to the outdoor ruins when the buildings close. In heavy rain, shorten the visit and avoid climbing near high walls.

- Maizuru Castle Park (Kofu Castle Ruins) → Kofu Station and departure preparations
Retrace your route to Kofu Station's south exit after visiting, have lunch and catch your departure. The official roughly three-minute park–exit walk excludes sightseeing, meals and reaching the departure platform. This plan leaves on an afternoon Chuo Line train; an early morning departure leaves little time for the castle ruins.

Outdoor steps lead to the keep platform. If steps are difficult or rain is heavy, explore the lower ruins instead.
Included: Adult prefectural art museum collection admission: ¥520; regular Kofu Station–museum buses: ¥340 × 2 = ¥1,200.
Extra costs and conditions: Excludes one night's accommodation, meals, luggage storage, return travel outside the prefecture, separate activities and shopping. Museum special exhibitions and extra paid hotel–station transport are also excluded.

Frequently asked questions
Can I visit the gem museum before leaving on the second morning?
A morning departure leaves little time for the gem museum. This itinerary visits the exhibits in the morning, returns to the station and leaves in the afternoon. To move the visit to day 1, compare your arrival time, museum hours and ropeway queues together.
