Kansai Wide Area Pass: five-day routes, exchange offices and reserved seats
Japan rail pass guide
The Kansai Wide Area Pass costs JPY 12,000 for an adult or JPY 6,000 for a child and covers designated routes in Kansai and towards Okayama · 岡山, Tottori · 鳥取 and Takamatsu · 高松 for five consecutive days. Its Shinkansen coverage ends at Okayama; travel onwards to Hiroshima needs a separate ticket.
When does this pass suit your itinerary?
Compare it with ordinary ticket totals if your itinerary includes eligible limited-express and Shinkansen journeys over several days. First check whether your travel dates fit the five-consecutive-day requirement.
Who can use it?
This pass requires a passport issued outside Japan and Temporary Visitor status on entry. The Kansai WIDE Excursion is a separate product with its own eligibility and validity period; check those conditions separately.
Prices and child fares
The official five-day price is JPY 12,000 adult or JPY 6,000 child. The current Japanese terms define children as aged 6–11 when payment is made. Check the agency’s actual selling price and cancellation conditions separately on its sales page.
Travelling with young children
Each adult or child pass holder can bring up to two children aged 1–5 free of charge. A child pass is needed for the third or any additional child, for a child occupying a separate reserved seat, or for a child travelling alone. Infants under one year travel free.
Five calendar days, rather than 120 hours
Validity runs from 00:00 on the start date to 24:00 on the fifth day, Japan time. If you remain on a train into the following day, basic-fare coverage continues until you leave the gate, and the train-charge coverage continues until you get off that train. This does not permit unrestricted travel on new trains the next day.
Exchange orders and WEST QR are different
An agency MCO or E-MCO is an exchange order. Exchange it for the actual pass before boarding. WEST QR Kansai Area and Kansai Mini passes are separate products; this paper-pass exchange process does not apply to them.
Covered routes and exclusions
The Sanyo Shinkansen is covered between Shin-Osaka and Okayama. Conventional-line boundaries shown on the official map include Yura · 由良 towards Tottori, Tsuruga · 敦賀 and Maibara · 米原 to the north, Tsuge · 柘植 to the east, Shingu · 新宮, Wakayamashi · 和歌山市 and Kishi · 貴志 to the south, Soja · 総社 and Uno · 宇野 to the west, and Utazu · 宇多津–Takamatsu in Shikoku. JR West also lists Amanohashidate · 天橋立 as a destination for this pass; check the mapped rail sections and pay separately for any bus or sightseeing ticket outside its terms. The Tokaido Shinkansen and the Sanyo Shinkansen west of Okayama are excluded, so a Shinkansen journey to Hiroshima · 広島 is not covered by this pass. Compare the separate Kansai–Hiroshima Area Pass or pay the onward fare. Coverage may differ between Shinkansen and conventional trains connecting the same stations. Use the official English coverage map linked below to check exact routes.

Using covered buses
Regular JR West route buses within the pass area are included; the Kanazawa area and highway buses are excluded. Take one numbered boarding ticket per person when you board. When you get off, show the pass to the driver and put only the numbered ticket into the fare box. Do not put the pass in the fare box.
Where to exchange: directions and opening hours
At Kansai-airport Station · 関西空港, go to the JR ticket office (Midori-no-madoguchi · みどりの窓口) on the station’s second floor, rather than the Nankai gates on the same floor. The official station hours are 05:30–23:00, and this station appears on the agency exchange-order location list for Kansai Wide. Bring your electronic order and original passport, and state your start date. Use a machine only after checking its PASSPORT label and support for your particular exchange order. The separate Terminal 1 exchange counter is on the first floor, south side, and opens 08:00–20:00. If you cannot exchange at the airport, use a supported station counter: the JR West East Exit Ticket Plaza at Shin-Osaka, the Central Exit JR ticket office at Osaka · 大阪, or the JR ticket office outside the second-floor gates at Okayama. Transfer-gate counter hours and machine hours do not necessarily match exchange-counter hours. Tottori’s JR ticket office currently opens 08:00–19:00. In the official English station plans, use Central Gate (1F) for Kyoto · 京都 and Osaka, and East Gate (3F) for Shin-Osaka. The plans are dated 1 September 2025 for Kyoto, 14 January 2026 for Osaka and 1 October 2026 for Shin-Osaka. Counter hours were checked separately against current station information.

Sanyo Shinkansen S Work cars and Sunrise Seto/Izumo, including Nobinobi seats, are excluded. For S Work cars, pay the full fare and train charges for that section.

Oversized luggage on the Sanyo Shinkansen
On the San’yō Shinkansen, reserve a seat with an oversized-baggage space before travelling if the sum of your suitcase’s three dimensions is over 160 cm but no more than 250 cm. The reservation itself has no extra charge, but bringing that bag without the required reservation incurs a JPY 1,000 fee. Some 16-carriage trains are trialling deck luggage lockers that do not require a booking. Those lockers do not remove the seat-reservation rule for bags over 160 cm; they are different from the reserved space behind the last row of seats.
If you miss a train or it is full
If you miss your reserved train, use a later train with non-reserved seats where the pass permits it, or reserve a seat again on the next train. An all-reserved train has no non-reserved car. Standing travel is allowed only on trains where the operator expressly provides that option when reserved seats are sold out; do not assume it applies to every all-reserved train. A lost pass cannot be reissued. On the San’yō Shinkansen, if your bag exceeds 160 cm in total dimensions, rebook a seat with an oversized-baggage space rather than boarding a non-reserved car.
Changes, cancellations and refunds
Before an agency order is exchanged, request cancellation from the original seller. JR’s rules refer to agency refunds within one year of exchange-order issue, but actual fees and cancellation deadlines vary by agency and product. An unused actual pass obtained from an agency order may be refunded before its start date or during its validity period at designated exchange counters or Nippon Travel Agency branches handling exchange. The fee is 10% of the selling price, rounded down to the nearest JPY 10, with a minimum of JPY 220. Direct official JR website purchases have separate conditions, including a JPY 560 fee. No refund is given after use starts; this pass’s rules also exclude refunds for cancellations and delays.
From purchase to boarding
Check that your purchase is the Kansai Wide five-day pass, then choose your start date in Japan. You cannot purchase duplicate passes of this type for the same period or share one pass between travellers.
Bring the exchange order and every traveller’s original passport. Exchange an MCO or E-MCO at a designated location within three months of issue and no later than the travel date.
Exchange an MCO at a designated counter, or an E-MCO at a supported counter or a supported machine marked PASSPORT. A station having a passport reader does not by itself mean that you can collect this pass there.
At a supported E-MCO machine, select your language, choose collection of a reserved ticket, select EXCHANGE ORDER (E-TICKET), scan the QR or enter the exchange number, confirm the start date and conditions, then scan your passport. Go to a counter if the machine cannot read your IC passport.
Reserve seats after collecting the actual pass. Agency exchange orders cannot be used for seat bookings before exchange. Reserved-seat use is unlimited, but use a counter for further reservations after six machine bookings.
Check your reserved train, car and seat before boarding, then use the actual pass at the gate. Use staffed gates on JR Shikoku sections. Carry your passport while travelling.
Frequently asked questions
Can I take the Shinkansen from Kyoto to Shin-Osaka?
No. Kansai Wide covers the Sanyo Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Okayama. Kyoto–Shin-Osaka is on the Tokaido Shinkansen and requires separate tickets.
Are reserved seats limited to six bookings?
Reserved-seat use is unlimited. After six reservation marks are printed on the pass, make additional reservations at a counter. Direct JR purchases allow pre-collection online reservations for up to six trains; agency orders require actual-pass collection first.
Can I book seats online immediately after buying an agency exchange order?
An agency MCO or E-MCO must be exchanged for the actual pass before reserving seats. Pre-collection online bookings through JR-WEST ONLINE TRAIN RESERVATION are a condition of direct JR purchases.
Can I show the QR exchange order at the gate?
No. An MCO or E-MCO is not a gate ticket. Collect the actual pass at a designated location first. It differs from a WEST QR boarding ticket.
Can I change the start date after exchange?
No. Once the actual pass is issued, its start date and type cannot be changed. You may change a reserved train at a supported counter before its departure time.
Where can I refund an exchanged pass?
An unused pass from an agency order can be refunded at designated exchange counters and other supported locations before the start date or within the validity period. The fee is 10% of the selling price, rounded down to the nearest JPY 10, with a minimum of JPY 220. Direct official website purchases have separate conditions, including a JPY 560 fee. Before exchange, follow the original agency’s conditions. No refund is available after use begins.
Do young children need a pass?
Each adult or child pass holder can bring up to two children aged 1–5 free of charge. A child pass is needed for the third or any additional child, a child occupying a separate reserved seat, or a child travelling alone. Infants under one year travel free.
Does the five-day pass last 120 hours from my first train?
No. It is valid from 00:00 on the start date to 24:00 on the fifth day, Japan time—not for 120 hours after your first ride. Exchanging the order or boarding late on day one does not extend the last day.
Can I use an automatic gate at Takamatsu?
Use the staffed gate. The official Japanese terms and coverage map state that automatic gates cannot be used for this pass on JR Shikoku sections.
Can I bring a large suitcase without a reservation?
Add its length, width and height. On the Sanyo Shinkansen, a total over 160 cm and no more than 250 cm requires a seat reservation with an oversized-baggage area. Deck storage compartments without reservations are a separate arrangement.
What if seats with oversized-baggage areas are full?
Choose another train where you can reserve the required space. If you miss your train, do not simply board an unreserved car on the next train with oversized luggage. Show your actual pass and reserve another seat with an oversized-baggage area.
Do you need to reserve a Shinkansen oversized-baggage seat when riding the HARUKA limited express?
This reservation system applies to Shinkansen services, not conventional trains such as Haruka. Still store your luggage within the available space and keep the aisle clear.
Can I get the pass price refunded if trains are cancelled or delayed?
The official Kansai Wide refund rules exclude refunds for service cancellations and delays. Cancelling an unexchanged agency order is separate; check the original seller’s cancellation conditions.
