Where should you stay in Kanagawa?

Stay in Yokohama for harbour walks and meals, or Kamakura and Fujisawa for temples and Enoshima. For an overnight hot spring stay and a museum visit in Hakone, compare hotels in Yumoto and Gora. Reaching Gora requires another mountain train ride from Yumoto. For an early flight home, decide whether to leave Hakone the previous day and stay somewhere with easier airport access.

Yokohama and Kamakura are separate cities in Kanagawa Prefecture. Enoshima belongs to Fujisawa City, while Hakone is a town. If you want to visit all four areas, compare itineraries that change hotel bases.

Harbour, garden, temples, island or art museum?

Compare Yokohama for ship and port exhibits, Hasedera and Kotokuin for temple visits, and Enoshima for island views. Sankeien offers gardens, while Hakone’s Open-Air Museum has outdoor sculpture in the mountains. Each attraction uses different stations and journeys, so start with fares, admission deadlines and walking routes.

The adult day ticket costs JPY 800 and is valid only on its issue date. Returns cost JPY 400 Kamakura–Hase, JPY 520 Kamakura–Enoshima, JPY 620 Fujisawa–Hase and JPY 440 Fujisawa–Enoshima. One day ticket cannot cover return trips on two dates. Decide whether to use only those sections or stop at other stations, then compare by day. JR, Keikyu, Hakone mountain railway and admission are excluded from the Enoden day ticket.

Adult two-day passes cost JPY 7,100 from Shinjuku or JPY 6,000 from Odawara. They cover designated Hakone transport and one return between the Odakyu starting station and Odawara. JR Yokohama–Odawara, airport trains, Romancecar supplements and Open-Air Museum admission cost extra. This route excludes lake and ropeway visits. Three days B’s ordinary railway total for Odawara return and Yumoto–museum–Gora–Yumoto is JPY 1,800, below the JPY 6,000 Odawara pass. Compare ordinary tickets if using only the listed rail sections. Plan Hakone accommodation and your flight home together

On day one, travel from the airport to your base station and choose sightseeing according to arrival time. Hakone hotel dinner deadlines, bathing hours, shuttles and luggage storage depend on booking conditions; check with the hotel before choosing a route. On departure day, allow separate luggage collection, station access, train waits, changes, ride time, airport terminal travel and check-in. From Hakone, add descent to Odawara. For a morning flight, move the previous day to a city with airport access and omit final-day sightseeing. These routes suggest visit order; set actual departures using travel-date operation and reservations.

Admission and transport in route subtotals

These subtotals are for one adult, using Open-Air Museum same-day tickets and individual Enoden fares. On days combining Enoshima tower and Escar, use the JPY 1,100 daytime set. On event days, leave the garden before 17:00; night garden fees are extra. JR, Minatomirai Line, airport and station-to-hotel travel, meals, hotels, separate bathing, Buddha interiors and extra activities are excluded. Different-day Nippon Maru and port museum visits use separate JPY 400 and JPY 500 tickets. One same-day JPY 800 combined ticket cannot be split across two dates. JR travel between Fujisawa and Tsujido costs extra, beyond the free gallery visit. These fares were checked on 8 October 2026.

Adult singles are JPY 200 Kamakura–Hase, JPY 310 Fujisawa–Hase and JPY 220 Fujisawa–Enoshima; respective returns are JPY 400, JPY 620 and JPY 440. Which areas work well for a day in Kanagawa?

Kanagawa Prefecture · 神奈川県

Choose Yokohama for harbour and ship visits, Kamakura for temples and the Great Buddha, or Enoshima for an island walk with sea views. For Hakone’s museum and a hot spring hotel, allow extra time for trains into the mountains. Your return journey depends on whether you keep your Yokohama hotel or move to Hakone.

Sakuragicho · 桜木町: ships and harbour exhibits

Walk from Sakuragicho Station to Nippon Maru and the port museum. Choose the ship for a look inside, or the museum for exhibits on the port’s history. A combined ticket for both on the same day differs from separate tickets used on different days. If you arrive late, choose a waterfront walk or meal instead of rushing to meet indoor admission deadlines.

Sankeien: a garden day separate from the harbour

Set aside half a day for Sankeien if you want gardens and historic buildings. Take a bus from Yokohama Station’s east exit, then walk from the stop to the main gate. The garden is away from the harbour waterfront, so you need not squeeze it together with a ship visit on a short arrival day. Allow for the bus and walk both ways before returning to Yokohama.

Hase · 長谷: walk between two temples

Take the Enoden from Kamakura or Fujisawa to Hase Station, then walk between Hasedera and Kotokuin. Each temple charges its own admission fee, and Hasedera involves stairs. After seeing the Great Buddha, eat near Hase Station before returning. Adding sightseeing in Hakone’s mountains that day leaves less time at the temples.

Enoshima · 江の島: island views and a daytime garden visit

Give Enoshima its own day for sea views and an island walk, separate from the temples. From Enoden Enoshima Station, cross the bridge, walk through Nakamise Street and continue uphill on the island to Sea Candle. Escar runs uphill only, so allow time to walk down. Daytime garden admission is free, but the tower has a fee; distinguish the evening garden fee on event days too.

Tsujido · 辻堂: free woodblock print exhibits

Visit the Ukiyo-e Museum in Tsujido for prints depicting Fujisawa and Enoshima. Walk about five minutes from JR Tsujido Station’s north exit to Cocco Terrace Shonan’s seventh floor. Exhibition admission is free; JR travel between Fujisawa and Tsujido costs extra. This indoor visit differs from temples and island views, and can have its own arrival-day slot as in five days B.

Hakone-Yumoto · 箱根湯本: hot spring stays and museums

Yumoto can be a base for a hot spring hotel stay, local history exhibits and outdoor sculpture. Visiting the two museums on separate days leaves time to rest at your hotel. The art museum and Gora require another mountain train ride from Yumoto. Compare three days B, with two nights in Yumoto, and five days A, with one night before returning to Yokohama the day before your flight. For a morning flight, leave the mountains the previous day and spend the last night somewhere with easier airport access.

Frequently asked questions

Can you visit Kamakura temples and Hakone’s museum on the same day?

Give them a day each for more time at the temples and museum. Kamakura links Hasedera and the Great Buddha on foot; Hakone requires a further mountain train from Yumoto to the museum. Combining both areas in a day reduces viewing time through inter-area travel.
