Okinawa main island: how far should I travel from Naha?
Stay around Naha’s Kencho-mae for market meals, Kokusai Street and Shurijo. Give the north a separate day for Churaumi’s whale sharks and manta rays. Ishigaki and Miyakojima need separate flights and accommodation.
Choose a car-free itinerary for one to four nights, or a three- or four-night plan for Okinawa World’s cave and crafts in the south. Southern vehicle plans need a hire car or return taxis arranged beforehand; vehicles are excluded from admission and transport subtotals.

Choose Kencho-mae for meals and shopping near southern Kokusai Street and northern buses. Check the walk to the Kencho Kitaguchi bus stop when choosing accommodation. Station and bus stop are different locations, and not every nearby property is beside the stop. These itineraries leave from and return to Kencho-mae accommodation. Other bases change the accommodation-to-station/stop walk.

Around Makishi Station · 牧志駅
Consider Makishi for evenings near the market and eastern Kokusai Street. The official station-to-market walk is about nine minutes. On northern days, allow separate travel to Kencho Kitaguchi bus stop. A Makishi stay changes these itineraries’ Kencho-mae accommodation returns and transport costs.

Around Omoromachi Station · おもろまち駅
Omoromachi suits museum and art-gallery visits. Allow roughly 10–15 minutes from the station to the museum’s front entrance. Use Yui Rail for market and Shurijo Castle Park days. Staying here changes these itineraries’ Kencho-mae accommodation returns and transport costs.

Motobu accommodation · 本部
Consider a Motobu night for repeat or longer aquarium/Ocean Expo Park visits. Five-day plan A stays in Naha and visits the north once; adult northern return bus fares are JPY 3,800. Admission and Naha rail fares are separate. A Motobu stay changes origins and bus segments, so compare accommodation and transport costs again.
You can visit the aquarium on day 2, stay in Motobu, then visit the botanical centre on day 3 before returning to Naha. A final Naha night reduces long-distance travel on departure day. Choose the Kencho Kitaguchi-to-hotel service and day-3 Naha return together before booking accommodation.
Hotel Mahaina Wellness Resort Okinawa · ホテルマハイナ ウェルネスリゾートオキナワ lists a free shuttle towards the aquarium. Alight at the affiliated Royal View Hotel Churaumi · ロイヤルビューホテル美ら海 entrance, then walk roughly five minutes to the aquarium. The shuttle does not enter the aquarium entrance; confirm return times at reception. Check-in starts at 15:00; check-out is 11:00. Ask the hotel about booking-specific conditions and large-luggage storage before check-in/after check-out. If arranging accommodation and connections is difficult, choose the Naha-based itineraries below.
The hotel has no airport transfer. For a direct northern departure-day airport journey, check dated Yanbaru Express Bus or Okinawa Airport Shuttle timetables. Distinguish your hotel-area boarding stop and domestic/international terminal arrival points. Allow road congestion and arrive comfortably before airline check-in/bag-drop deadlines.
Some southbound Airport Shuttle services end at Naha Bus Terminal without entering the airport; check that yours reaches it. This operator differs from Yanbaru Express Bus, so check booking methods and fares separately.

Northern bus timetables and seats
For northern days, check Kencho Kitaguchi→Kinen Koen-mae and the return together in YKB’s official timetable. Extra vehicles beyond the basic timetable use separately announced days/periods.
Yanbaru Express Bus does not reserve seats or allow motorway standing, so full buses may prevent boarding. The next service also has no guarantee: finish for your first chosen return and prepare a taxi/extra costs if you miss the last. Distinguish other operators’ buses with the same number.

Changing plans for wind, rain or typhoons
Move the north to another day if wind or rain makes park walking difficult. If dates cannot change, compare Naha exhibitions around museum opening and last admission.
Check bus operations and facility opening separately. Do not travel for indoor sightseeing when typhoons stop transport.

Naha to the southern cave
Vehicle plans need a hire car or driver service for accommodation–Okinawa World returns. For buses, take route 54 Maekawa or 83 Gyokusendo from Naha Bus Terminal to Gyokusendo-mae, then walk roughly two minutes. Check dated services in both directions and segment fares separately from vehicle-plan costs.

Giving a day to the northern aquarium
Adult aquarium admission JPY 2,180 + Kencho Kitaguchi–Kinen Koen-mae YKB return JPY 3,800 = JPY 5,980. These two items exclude airport–city rail, meals and accommodation. Trip-length itineraries have separate subtotals adding their actual city travel/facilities.
Switching to southern experiences or northern accommodation
Southern vehicles are excluded from admission. Northern accommodation changes the starting point from Naha-return bus plans. Arrange vehicle quotes, hotel-to-stop travel and your Naha/airport return before comparing.

Compare Yui Rail segments and free passes
Use Yui Rail within Naha and to Shuri; it does not reach Churaumi Aquarium. Some Tedako-Uranishi-direction trains terminate at Makishi, so check the displayed destination for Shuri/Omoromachi. Regular Kencho-mae–Shuri one-way fare is JPY 320; Omoromachi JPY 250. Shuri-only returns cost JPY 640, so the adult JPY 1,000 24-hour free pass is not automatically worthwhile. Compare other rides and facility discounts. The 48-hour pass is JPY 1,800, valid for 48 hours after purchase. These exclude northern Yanbaru Express Bus and southern routes 54/83, and do not replace aquarium/museum admission. Use the northern bus segment fares for the aquarium.

Check northern bus operations and boarding conditions
Yanbaru Express Bus does not accept advance seat reservations. A full bus may prevent boarding; reaching the stop does not guarantee your chosen service. The operator reports a bus-location page fault. An absent service on location information alone does not prove suspension: check operating notices and stop guidance.
Okinawa main-island food and restaurants
Okinawa soba is a soup dish with wheat noodles, rather than buckwheat. Goya champuru is a bitter-melon stir-fry; pair it with rice if you enjoy bitter flavours. Compare restaurants in Naha and your destinations in the main-island food guide.
Plan market meals around individual shops and cooking last orders rather than building hours. Aquarium days in these itineraries have park lunch, then Naha dinner after the return bus. Do not choose closed Nantoya as an Okinawa World meal destination. Confirm SANGO’s same-day hours with the facility.

Four-/five-day plan B needs southern return vehicles arranged in advance. Get separate quotes from the booking provider. If switching to buses without a vehicle, check route 54/83 dated returns and segment fares through official access guidance. Without an arranged return, skip the south and choose a Naha city day.

Where in Naha should I stay without a car?
For city sightseeing and northern bus returns, consider Kencho-mae. Use Yui Rail for Shurijo/museum and Yanbaru Express Bus from Kencho Kitaguchi in front of Palette Kumoji for the north. Compare Makishi for Kokusai Street/market meals or Omoromachi for exhibitions. Check accommodation-to-station/stop walks and luggage storage separately. For southern Okinawa World, arrange a hire car or return vehicle with a driver first.

Can I add Ishigaki and Miyakojima to five main-island days?
These islands have no road connection to the main island and cannot be treated as nearby neighbourhood stops between Naha/northern visits. Arrange each island’s flights, accommodation and local transport separately. Separate Ishigaki and Miyakojima guides are available. Official Okinawa island-travel guidance checked 8 October 2026.
