One night in Okinawa: what should I see in Naha?

Choose Shurijo for Ryukyu castle walks, or the museum and Fukushuen for nature and history displays and gardens. On day 2, leave time after the castle for airport travel. On day 1, allow museum viewing time after visiting your accommodation.

A · Market first, then Shurijo Castle

Eat at the market and explore Kokusai Street shops first, then walk Shurijo Castle Park next day. Choose this for meals, shopping and Ryukyu history on a short trip. Travel by Yui Rail and on foot, with a departure flight allowing castle viewing, luggage collection at your accommodation and airport check-in.

Day 1 · Naha Airport → Kencho-mae accommodation → Kokusai Street/market → accommodation

Enjoy market meals and Kokusai Street before Shurijo Castle Park tomorrow. You need to be ready for Naha sightseeing from arrival afternoon, with market dinner before individual order cut-offs. Choose a departure flight that leaves time for castle viewing and airport travel.

  1. Naha Airport station → Kencho-mae accommodation

After immigration and luggage collection, use the terminal’s connecting passage on Level 2 to Naha Airport station. Take Yui Rail towards Tedako-Uranishi and get off at Kencho-mae. The adult fare is JPY 290, and the ride takes roughly 13 minutes. Walk from the station to your Kencho-mae accommodation.

  2. Kencho-mae accommodation → Kokusai Street, market and dinner

From your accommodation, walk towards Kencho-mae and explore shops from Kokusai Street’s southern entrance towards First Makishi Public Market. The market building is at 2-10-1 Matsuo, Naha. To choose ingredients on Level 1 and request cooking, confirm ingredient and cooking prices first, or order from a Level 2 restaurant menu. Level 2 restaurant guidance lists last orders at 20:00; individual shop hours differ.

  3. Kokusai Street and market → Kencho-mae accommodation

After eating, walk back along Kokusai Street to Kencho-mae accommodation. On market closure days or arrivals too late for last orders, choose an open Kokusai Street restaurant. Market/street meals and purchases are excluded from the subtotal.

Day 2 · Accommodation → Shurijo Castle Park → collect luggage → airport

Visit Shurijo Castle Park for Ryukyu castle history before departing. Main Hall interior viewing needs more time than a short walk. Skip the castle if you cannot allow accommodation returns and airport travel before airline deadlines.

  1. Kencho-mae accommodation and station → Shuri south exit → Shureimon

Walk from accommodation to Kencho-mae. Take a Tedako-Uranishi-bound train that reaches Shuri and get off there: adult JPY 320, 14 minutes. Use the south exit, descend by stairs or lift and follow official Shureimon walking directions. General guidance gives roughly 15 minutes; Main Hall booking guidance separately allows roughly 20 minutes from Shuri to park information centre Suimuikan · 首里杜館.

  2. Shureimon → Castle grounds and paid area at Hoshinmon

Explore Shureimon and the castle grounds, then enter the paid area. For advance tickets from 23 November onwards, show the QR code at Hoshinmon · 奉神門 ticket gates. With Main Hall interior reservations, join the viewing queue during your allocated session. The operator recommends a booking 40–50 minutes after arriving at Shuri station. Official guidance also allows roughly 90–120 minutes from Suimuikan through Main Hall interior viewing and back; do not treat it as a quick pre-flight walk.

  3. Shurijo Castle Park and Shuri station → Collect luggage at Kencho-mae → Naha Airport

After viewing, walk back to Shuri and take an airport-bound train to Kencho-mae. Walk to your accommodation, collect luggage and return to Kencho-mae. Take the Naha Airport train, with a JPY 290 fare and a 13-minute ride, then use the terminal’s connecting passage on Level 2. Shuri return rail fares total JPY 640. Allow post-visit station walking, train waiting, accommodation returns, luggage collection and airport check-in separately.

Adult paid-area admission is JPY 400 through 21 November 2026 and JPY 1,000 from 23 November. The whole park closes on 22 November, so this castle itinerary is unavailable then. On the 23rd, plan afternoon viewing: free inner grounds open 11:15, the paid area and Main Hall interior open at noon. Tickets without reservations exclude the Main Hall interior; check available dates/sessions on the official booking screen. Exclude day-2 castle viewing for morning flights or departures leaving insufficient check-in time afterwards.

For one adult, airport return rail JPY 580 + Shuri return rail JPY 640 + paid-area admission total JPY 1,620 through 21 November or JPY 2,220 from the 23rd. Flights, accommodation, meals and separate luggage-storage charges are excluded. Allow walking separately.

Reduce outdoor viewing if wind or rain makes castle or garden walking difficult. To switch to the museum, check opening, last admission and Yui Rail operations first. Do not assume indoor facilities operate normally when a typhoon stops transport. Skipping/changing visits also changes admission and transport segments.

Verified admission and transport subtotal: One adult: JPY 1,620 for a Shurijo visit through 21 November 2026; JPY 2,220 from 23 November

Included: Shurijo paid area JPY 400 or 1,000 + Naha Airport–Kencho-mae return Yui Rail JPY 580 + Kencho-mae–Shuri return Yui Rail JPY 640.

Extra costs: Flights, accommodation, meals, shopping and separate luggage-storage charges.

All Shurijo Castle Park areas close on 22 November; on the 23rd, free areas open 11:15 and the paid area at noon. Main Hall interior needs a ticket with a reservation for your chosen date and time. Reducing/skipping castle viewing in wind or rain changes costs. On departure day, first allow luggage collection at accommodation and airport check-in.

B · A short museum and garden trip

Choose the museum and Fukushuen plan for Okinawa’s nature and history displays and a leisurely garden walk. Use Yui Rail and walking without a long northern journey. Arrival day must leave museum viewing time after accommodation, and the garden must open next day.

Day 1 · Naha Airport → Kencho-mae accommodation → museum → accommodation

See Okinawa’s nature and history exhibitions on arrival day. Going via Kencho-mae accommodation means you need viewing time after immigration, rail and walking. If Fukushuen is open tomorrow, you can see both exhibitions and garden.

  1. Naha Airport station → Leave luggage at Kencho-mae accommodation

After immigration and luggage collection, use the terminal’s connecting passage on Level 2 to the airport station. Take a Tedako-Uranishi-bound train to Kencho-mae: adult JPY 290, 13 minutes. Visit your accommodation, then return to the station for the museum.

  2. Kencho-mae station → Omoromachi → museum front entrance and permanent exhibition

Take a Tedako-Uranishi-bound train that reaches Omoromachi from Kencho-mae: JPY 250, six minutes. Walk to the museum at 3-1-1 Omoromachi, Naha: about ten minutes, or 15 at a slower pace. Follow official access guidance and use the front entrance; the side entrance and rear gate are currently closed. Adult permanent museum exhibition admission is JPY 530. Last admission is at 17:30 on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday, or at 19:30 on Friday and Saturday. Arriving before cut-off still needs enough viewing time.

  3. Museum and Omoromachi station → Kencho-mae → dinner and accommodation

Walk from the front entrance back to Omoromachi and take a Naha Airport-bound train to Kencho-mae: JPY 250, six minutes. Eat dinner at an open restaurant near southern Kokusai Street, then walk to accommodation. Verified rail today totals JPY 790: airport–Kencho-mae JPY 290 + museum return JPY 500.

Even when choosing exhibitions for rain, check museum opening and last admission first. Do not travel for indoor sightseeing on days when typhoons stop transport. If tomorrow’s wind or rain prevents garden walking, shorten the visit, collect luggage and go to the airport. Skipping the garden changes plan B’s two-facility itinerary and costs.

Day 2 · Accommodation → Fukushuen → collect luggage → airport

After yesterday’s exhibitions, finish with Fukushuen and a city meal. For a morning flight, move the garden to the previous day or skip it and go to the airport.

  1. Kencho-mae accommodation → Fukushuen entrance

From Kencho-mae accommodation, walk towards the station and on to Fukushuen. The station-to-garden walk is seven minutes. Use the official access map for the entrance at 2-29-19 Kume, Naha. Daytime adult admission is JPY 200 from 09:00. Accommodation-to-station walking is extra.

  2. Fukushuen and city restaurants → Meal and closure-day adjustment

After the garden, return towards Kencho-mae for a meal at an open restaurant. On Wednesday/replacement closures, you can explore Kokusai Street shops and restaurants, but this changes the garden itinerary and costs.

  3. Collect luggage at Kencho-mae accommodation → Kencho-mae → Naha Airport

Walk back to accommodation, collect luggage and return to Kencho-mae. Take a Naha Airport-bound train, with a JPY 290 fare and a 13-minute ride, then use the terminal’s passage on Level 2. Choose a flight allowing walking, luggage collection, rail waiting and airline check-in after the garden. Exclude final-day garden viewing for morning flights.

Two-day rail costs JPY 1,080; museum/daytime garden admission JPY 730, giving JPY 1,810. This differs from going directly from airport to museum without accommodation first. Meals, accommodation, flights and separate accommodation luggage-storage charges are excluded. Skipping the final-day garden removes JPY 200, giving JPY 1,610, but changes plan B’s museum/garden itinerary.

Verified admission and transport subtotal: One adult: JPY 1,810

Included: Museum permanent exhibition JPY 530 + daytime Fukushuen JPY 200 + airport–Kencho-mae return Yui Rail JPY 580 + Kencho-mae–Omoromachi return Yui Rail JPY 500.

Extra costs: Flights, accommodation, meals, shopping, separate luggage-storage charges and special exhibition admission.

Based on leaving luggage at Kencho-mae accommodation first, then making a museum return trip. Check museum opening/last admission and garden closures. Skipping the departure-day garden gives JPY 1,610; night garden admission adds JPY 100. Apply the same reduction if wind or rain causes you to skip the garden.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see Shurijo on day 2 before a morning flight?

Skip it and go to the airport for a morning flight. Castle access needs station walking, viewing and returning to accommodation for luggage. Besides Kencho-mae–airport’s 13-minute ride, allow accommodation/station/terminal walks, waiting and airline check-in. In particular, the park closes 22 November 2026 and the paid area opens noon on the 23rd. Skipping viewing changes admission/transport subtotals.

Shurijo closures and opening timesShuri south-exit walking routeYui Rail Kencho-mae fares and timesNaha Airport monorail access

Does the museum/garden plan suit a late first-day arrival?

You need viewing time after Kencho-mae accommodation and the Omoromachi-to-front-entrance walk. Museum last admission is at 17:30 on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday, and at 19:30 on Friday and Saturday. The museum closes on Mondays unless it is a public holiday, substitute holiday or Okinawa Memorial Day, when it closes the next weekday instead. Late arrival requiring museum omission changes the two-facility itinerary/costs. Check the next day’s flight time and any Wednesday or replacement garden closures.
