Two days in Okinawa: what should you see in Naha?

Choose Shurijo Castle Park for Ryukyu castle walks, or the museum and Fukushuen for nature and history exhibits and gardens. The castle route needs time for the airport after day-two viewing; the museum route needs viewing time after day-one hotel travel.

A · Market meals, then Shurijo Castle

Eat at the market and browse Kokusai Street on day one, then walk Shurijo Castle Park the next day. This short trip combines food, shopping and Ryukyu history using Yui Rail and walking. Choose a departure flight allowing time after the castle for hotel luggage collection and airport formalities.

Day 1 · Naha Airport → Kencho-mae hotel → Kokusai Street and market → hotel

Take a short trip with market meals and Kokusai Street before Shurijo Castle Park the following day. You need to be ready to explore Naha by the arrival afternoon, and dinner must fit each market restaurant’s last orders. Choose a departure flight allowing the castle visit and airport journey.

  1. Naha Airport Station → Kencho-mae hotel

After immigration and baggage collection, follow the terminal’s second-floor connecting passage to Naha Airport Station. Take Yui Rail towards Tedako-Uranishi to Kencho-mae. The adult fare is JPY 290 and the ride takes about 13 minutes. Walk from the station to your Kencho-mae hotel.

  2. Kencho-mae hotel → Kokusai Street, market and dinner

Walk from your hotel towards Kencho-mae and browse shops from Kokusai Street’s southern entrance towards First Makishi Public Market. The building is at 2-10-1 Matsuo, Naha. Before choosing ingredients on floor one for cooking, confirm ingredient and cooking charges; alternatively, choose from a second-floor restaurant menu. Listed last orders there are 20:00, with individual hours varying.

  3. Kokusai Street and market → Kencho-mae hotel

After eating, walk back along Kokusai Street to your Kencho-mae hotel. If arrival does not fit market opening or last orders, choose an open Kokusai Street restaurant. Food and purchases are excluded from the subtotal below.

Day 2 · Hotel → Shurijo Castle Park → collect hotel luggage → airport

Visit Shurijo Castle Park for Ryukyu castle history before departure. Seeing inside the Seiden main hall takes longer than a short walk. Skip the castle if you cannot leave enough time for the hotel return and airport journey before airline deadlines.

  1. Kencho-mae hotel and station → Shuri Station south exit and Shureimon

Walk from your hotel to Kencho-mae. Board a Tedako-Uranishi-bound service reaching Shuri and alight there: JPY 320 for adults, 14 minutes. Use the south exit, descend by stairs or lift and follow the official Shureimon walking route. General guidance gives about 15 minutes, but Seiden reservation guidance separately allows about 20 minutes from Shuri Station to the park information centre, Suimuikan · 首里杜館.

  2. Shureimon → Castle and paid area at Hoshinmon

Explore Shureimon and the castle grounds, then enter the paid area. For advance tickets from 23 November, show your QR code at Hoshinmon · 奉神門’s ticket gate. With a Seiden interior reservation, join its queue for your slot. The operator recommends a slot 40–50 minutes after arriving at Shuri Station. Official guidance also gives around 90–120 minutes from Suimuikan for a Seiden visit and return, so this is not a quick pre-flight walk.

  3. Shurijo Castle Park and Shuri Station → Collect luggage at Kencho-mae hotel, then Naha Airport

Walk back to Shuri Station and take an airport-bound train to Kencho-mae. Walk to the hotel for your luggage, then return to Kencho-mae Station. Take the airport-bound train, JPY 290 and 13 minutes, and follow the terminal’s second-floor passage. Shuri return trains total JPY 640. Allow separately for the walk to the station, train wait, hotel return, luggage collection and airport formalities.

Adult paid-area admission is JPY 400 through 21 November 2026 and JPY 1,000 from the 23rd. The whole park closes on the 22nd, making this castle itinerary unavailable. On the 23rd, plan an afternoon visit around the castle free area opening at 11:15 and paid area/Seiden at noon. Unreserved tickets exclude the Seiden interior; check available dates and slots on the official booking screen. Do not include the castle on day two with a morning flight or insufficient time afterwards for formalities.

For one adult, airport return trains JPY 580 plus Shuri return trains JPY 640 and paid-area admission total JPY 1,620 through the 21st or JPY 2,220 from the 23rd. Flights, accommodation, food and separate luggage storage are excluded. Allow walking time separately.

Reduce outdoor visits when strong rain or wind makes castle or garden walking difficult. Before replacing them with the museum, check opening, last admission and Yui Rail operation. Do not assume indoor facilities operate normally when a typhoon stops transport. Skipping or changing visits changes admission and journeys too.

Checked admission and transport subtotal: One adult: JPY 1,620 for Shurijo visits through 21 November 2026 / JPY 2,220 from 23 November

Includes: Shurijo paid area JPY 400 or 1,000 + airport ↔ Kencho-mae Yui Rail JPY 580 + Kencho-mae ↔ Shuri Yui Rail JPY 640

Costs extra: The subtotal excludes flights, accommodation, food, shopping and separate luggage storage.

The whole park closes on 22 November; on the 23rd, the free area opens at 11:15 and paid area at noon. Seiden interior access requires a reservation-inclusive ticket. Reducing or skipping the castle in bad weather changes costs. On departure day, leave time first for hotel luggage collection and airport formalities.

B · A short museum and garden trip

Choose the museum and Fukushuen to see Okinawa’s nature and history through exhibitions and walk a garden at leisure. Use Yui Rail and walking without long-distance northern travel. You need time to visit the museum after arrival and your hotel stop, and the garden must open the next day.

Day 1 · Naha Airport → Kencho-mae hotel → museum → hotel

See Okinawa’s nature and history exhibitions on arrival day. As you first stop at your Kencho-mae hotel, allow immigration, train and walking time before a worthwhile museum visit. If Fukushuen opens the next day, you can see exhibitions and gardens on this trip.

  1. Naha Airport Station → Leave luggage at Kencho-mae hotel

After immigration and baggage collection, use the terminal’s second-floor passage to the airport station. Take a Tedako-Uranishi-bound train to Kencho-mae: JPY 290 for adults, 13 minutes. Stop at your hotel, then return to the station for the museum journey.

  2. Kencho-mae Station → Omoromachi Station, museum front entrance and permanent exhibition

From Kencho-mae, board a Tedako-Uranishi-bound service reaching Omoromachi: JPY 250, six minutes. Walk about ten minutes, or 15 at a slower pace, to the museum at 3-1-1 Omoromachi, Naha. Follow official access guidance to the front entrance; the auxiliary entrance and rear gate are currently closed. Adult permanent-exhibition admission is JPY 530. Last admission is 17:30 on Tuesday–Thursday and Sunday, or 19:30 on Friday–Saturday. Leave enough viewing time even if arriving before the deadline.

  3. Museum and Omoromachi Station → Kencho-mae Station, dinner and hotel

Walk from the front entrance back to Omoromachi and take an airport-bound train to Kencho-mae: JPY 250, six minutes. Eat at an open southern Kokusai Street restaurant, then walk to your hotel. Checked trains today total JPY 790: airport → Kencho-mae JPY 290 plus museum return JPY 500.

Check museum opening and last admission even when choosing exhibitions for rain. Do not plan travel to indoor attractions when a typhoon stops transport. If rain or wind prevents the next day’s garden walk, shorten sightseeing, collect hotel luggage and go to the airport. Omitting the garden changes option B and its cost.

Day 2 · Hotel → Fukushuen → collect hotel luggage → airport

After the museum the previous day, finish with Fukushuen’s garden and a city meal. For a morning flight, move the garden to the previous day or skip it and go to the airport.

  1. Kencho-mae hotel → Fukushuen entrance

Walk from your hotel towards Kencho-mae, then to Fukushuen, seven minutes from the station. Follow the official access map to the garden entrance at 2-29-19 Kume, Naha. Daytime entry starts at 09:00 and costs JPY 200 for adults. The hotel-to-station walk is extra.

  2. Fukushuen and city restaurants → Meal and adjustments for garden closures

After the garden, return towards Kencho-mae and eat at an open restaurant. On Wednesdays or substitute closure days, browse Kokusai Street shops and restaurants instead, but this changes the garden itinerary and cost.

  3. Collect luggage at Kencho-mae hotel → Kencho-mae Station and Naha Airport

Walk back to your hotel, collect luggage and return to Kencho-mae Station. Take an airport-bound train, JPY 290 and 13 minutes, then use the terminal’s second-floor passage. Choose a flight allowing walking, luggage collection, train waits and airline formalities after the garden. Do not include the final-day garden with a morning departure.

Trains over both days total JPY 1,080, and museum/daytime garden admission JPY 730: JPY 1,810 altogether. These journeys differ from going straight from the airport to the museum without a hotel stop. Food, accommodation, flights and separate hotel luggage storage are excluded. Omitting the final-day garden removes JPY 200, giving JPY 1,610, but changes option B’s two-facility visit.

Checked admission and transport subtotal: One adult: JPY 1,810

Includes: Museum permanent exhibition JPY 530 + Fukushuen daytime admission JPY 200 + airport ↔ Kencho-mae Yui Rail JPY 580 + Kencho-mae ↔ Omoromachi Yui Rail JPY 500

Costs extra: The subtotal excludes flights, accommodation, food, shopping, separate luggage storage and special exhibitions.

Based on leaving luggage at your Kencho-mae hotel first, then returning from the museum. Check museum opening/last admission and garden closures. Omitting the departure-day garden gives JPY 1,610; night garden entry adds JPY 100. Apply the same reduction when omitting the garden for bad weather.
